That's an awesome fake. The green is really appealing for some reason. Excellent Tsung and Scorpion. I like a lot. 5/5

Why care about people if they're not bloody and on your carpet right now?

Very nice. Mind if I put it in my artist's advice thread, since it's pretty MK related?

I know html and will do all the work.
Sure, you can do that.

Just remember to give me credit. smile

Of course. But one question, since I'm going to try to seriously get into photoshop. Did you use the dodge brush on highlight settings for the mist of the picture the souls came from?

No, I used the Clouds filter to make the soul cloud, I used the dodge and burn tools to bring out darks and bright spots in the cloud.

I left the dodge brush set to mid tones, but you can try it set to highlights. Just experiment and see what works better.

The dodge and burn helps to make it more 3D looking and makes it look more powerful. So it doesn't look so much like a basic filter effect.

It's comparable to the difference between a drawing with a flat color and one with shadows and highlights.

It keeps it from looking too equal all over.

Hey bleed, would you say that this is partial to certain backgrounds? Cuz I tried it to make an ice effect for Sub-Zero's hands, and except on the black portion of his costume I lost the cloudy effect :\ I'm blaming it on the background though, as it is kinda busy.
This works in any background.

Here are a couple more examples of the use for this tutorial.

cool stuff...
by the way- for all you aspiring fake makers, besides having all the right instructions (thanks bleed!), work like this also requires artistic talent :)
Oh yeah, that helps too. grin
One thing to remember is that when using the Dodge and Burn brushes, DO NOT just rub the brush on there, you need to dab it. A lot of dabs with the brush set to a low opacity looks much better.

It's good to use different size brushes for this too.

Like you can use a the dodge brush set to 1 pixel to give the cloud a bit of an electric look.

You can drag the brush for something like that.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are having trouble seeing the cloud on a black background, mess around with the brightness and contrast to make it brighter and easier to see.

You can use the dodge brush for that too, if you need to brighten up certain areas.

Let me ask you a side question. wink That's a very streamlined technique, how long did it take you to figure it out the first time. Just curious.

Great technique, thanks for the insight.

I don't know how long it took me really.

I was just checking out the different layer styles one day and When I hit Screen, and several others, I was like !!! confused Hmmm innnnnteresting.

It didn't take too long to figure out that I could combine the clouds filter with the layer styles to get the effect I wanted.

It was like a domino effect in my mind.

So when I tried to make the smoke effect for the first time in a fake, I didn't even have to think about it too much really, I just put 2 and 2 together in my head and Vualla.

Nice tutorial.
I'm really old school on doing the souls, I just paint the green in a new file with the brush (The shape I want to), then I use the eraser at 50% to make the tranparency and I use the glaussian blur effect.
Right, there are several ways to get the look you want.

You're good at photoshop and making fakes, Bleed.

If you ever run out of ideas for them, PM me for some.

Did you do a motion blur on the cloud filter before the layer alteration for the Subzero picture?
Also, did you just do the same thing as before with the Smoke picture?
I did the mist for Sub Zero the same way I did the smoke for Human Smoke and Shang tsung.

I didn't put any motion blur on Sub's mist, what I did was stretch the mist Horizontally.
Ctrl+T then stretch it side ways.

There is a reason for this.

If you stretch the smoke sideways, it will stay sharp, and will get longer, which makes it easier to get a trail look.

If you do a motion blur, the image stays the same size, and it gets blurry. It doesn't look good or work for the trail effect.

Try it and see what I mean, it's a big difference.

For sub's breath, I used some white with the air brush, then I gave it a curling shape with the smudge tool. Then I made it transparent.

If you look behind Sub's head, you can see the mist curling.

The smudge tool is really useful for things like that, and making fire, or fireball trails, blending skin tones, and painting wrinkles in cloth.

Well, I added the other pics into the original post in my thread with your tutorial.

You seem to be really be progressing in Photoshop. Is this progression gradual, or are these ideas clicking in your head due to previous information? I know that you've had Photoshop since before this layout of MKO was created, but still...

I went to an art school for 4 years, and I learned a ton of stuff for photoshop.

I also do a lot of experimenting on my own, or if I don't know how to do something, I look it up on the net.

I suppose it's gradual, but the more I know, the faster I can figure stuff out.

I never get stuck for more than a few minutes.

It all just click in my mind instantly for the most part.

-------------------------------------------------

About making a gif animation.

It's very easy to do those animations.

It's basically, just turning layers on and off for every frame.

Then you control the speed of every frame.

Check out these tutorials.
