Mink, the director of the next Mortal Kombat movie, has been dropping some information about the direction of the project in the IMDB.com forums:
'MK3 is a re-invisioning of the franchise much as Batman Begins with Chris Nolan and Christian Bale was a re-invisioning of already traveled material. Currently we are cranking on the script when that is 100% premo then we move onto the next phases of making the best MK picture.'
'Re-vamped is the wrong word as it indicates that script was about a specific game story line and then we moved to the next game or vice versa. That is not the case. The mortal kombat universe is that a universe much as the x-men universe and spider-man universe are universes. By universe I mean multiple story arcs from multiple sometimes media sources and multiple tellings of the story creating what would be an entire historical presentation of a subject. Much as Ultimate spiderman is just as much a part of the spidey universe as is Spider man from the 60's and filmmakers looked at all of the spidey universe when adapting that. That being said the script we are working on is the next feature presentation from the MK Universe and it draws as does Batman Begins or Spidey from all the universe not just one particular story arc from a past, present or future game arc but of course does add the new and possibly relevant story arcs from those games into the universal theory.'
'It will blow you away... It is a complete new, modern, fresh kick ass vision like you have never seen before. The location for shooting is tabled for the moment until we finish the script... Casting is also tabled until we are done.'
'We are in the script phase when that is done we will start on the prep. There will be an annoucement then it will be clear about that...
We are working on the script with a group of people including the writers, studio, game company. producers and myself. This is a very very slow complicated note driven process. There is not one dedicated writer in a room banging it out by him or herself. It is a group scenario with multiple parties commenting and passing the material back and forth with extensive extensive notes and outlines...'
'There are multiple iterations of the script. In regards to starting and stopping that is a rumor. Theyre have been multiple tests shot and alot of design work done along with other development on the project.'
'All the great characters from MK are on the table and being utalized in the script in unique, new and inventive ways.'
'I care a great deal about MK and how it will be executed as do the producers and the studio's involved. If we didnt the project would have been done and on the video shelves a long long time ago just for the cash off the top based on the title and box cover and you would be discussing would the MK 7 and 8 movie be really good.'
'I play all the games. #1 is still one my favorite and I thought Deception was a great step. I have played all the games, seen all the toys, tv-shows, animated series, comic books and more material that wasnt even released.'
'Our approach on MK is new fresh take on the universe from the ground up. The script and the story is drawing from the whole universe of MK from the early 90's until now.'
'I have met with Linden (J. Cage from the first movie) and he is a great guy.'
'There will be some CG used for the visual fx.'
'The film was being discussed to happen in the Louisiana area and in Asia for exteriors. We were developing the idea to work there when the storm hit and due to the horrific events of the Hurricane I and the producer's felt it was inappropriate at the time to press the states resources in development for something as trivial as film making. We were then and still now however working on the script and other aspects of development to get it right. It is a rumor however that filming commenced in any fashion in Louisiana.'

Sounds pretty interesting, and Mink sounds committed to the project. It's also good that he expresses some degree of fandom for the Mortal Kombat franchise, hopefully that will lead him to make an excellent film out of it. If they don't rush it, and effectively adapt the source material into the new approach they are taking, it has potential to be great.

Heh, get Ralph Fiennes for Shao Kahn, and Liam Neeson for Liu Kang. :-p Kahn can get up in the morning and fire projectile attacks at random, working Zaterrans from his balcony.

are al bullshits.
the script process isn't that slow as mink want people to believe.
Yes they need time and needs to be careful, but absolutely they don't need to "start a rumor....bringing back ideas...telling thoughts..." all they need to do is met each other and talk, trying to achieve at least one single common point.
it's not that hard either.
i think that midwat is slowing them down, for unknown reasons.

Why would Midway want to slow them down. And scripts CAN take this long to make when there's been tons of rewrites and different producers requesting different things from you. It's absolutely possible.

Yea everything and anything is possible but this movie is never going to happy.
From 1997-2007 nothing is really offically annouced its all been pretty good rumors. No one from threshold has really said much for the pass 3 years or so.Anything you heard was nothing more then just a rumor cause theres never been an offical statement from really any company. And you can not really trust anyone unless you see it or its on mortalkombat.com so yea.
Plus all this stuff is old OLD news.I don't remember all year long anything being said from threshold entertainment.

maybe 'cause Midway didn't like all previous ideas from Mink's staff?
or maybe 'cause the movie can be an adaptation of mk8(the game9 with new characters and new storyline?
this is just a rumor, but remember almost every news born as "rumor"....

Or maybe just maybe this is the biggest joke if videogame/movie history.
I never heard of mink before the supposed new mk movie.Who cares anymore?Even if it was to lead up to mk8 you would think we would of heard some offical news by now even if the script is being rewritten or not.Theres really no one offically with this movie other then the guy playing scropion but that news is very old so not sure if he will still be or not.
When there is a script and btw whatever mink saids you can not really take that has offical news what so ever cause we don't even know if it is really him.But even so don't take anything offically unless threshold states it somehow. And no not everything that is news starts off has a rumor.

Agreed. If MK3 was really on its way to getting made, hunny, we would of been had OFFICIAL news. Sigh, what we do know is the MK team have stated over and over that they are involved with MK3. So if MK8 is a relaunch of the game series and if MK3 is a relaunch of the movie series, it makes a bit of sense. But I don't trust anybodys word, not even threshold, maybe midways, but other than that, i'm over it. Its been ten years, soon in a couple of days it'll be eleven.
Since this is probably the millonth time the MK3 script is being re-written, then this SHOULD be the last re-write, casting should begin sometime in the summer, with a release early 09? Thats all i'm giving this shit to, early 2009, thats when i fuckin graduate! If it's not out by then, just screw it. I'm done.
