Hello.
Something I meant to ask other MK fans if they remember, or if by some miracle, they happen to have :
I remember in the cinema in August 1995, having the pleasure of seeing the MK movie on the big screen, there were 2 scenes that were later omitted when this film was released on VHS (and later on DVD and blu-ray).
The first iinvolves Sub-zero and Scorpion first appearing on Shang's boat. Sonya pointed her handgun at them and told Johnny and Liu to get behing her. Johnny refused due to some macho reason, leading to a short argument between him and her, which was then interrupted bu Sub-zero freezing her weapon (This was then partially referred to on Shang's island where Johnny quotes - we can't help it, it's a guy thing).
The second is while Art Lean is preparing for his fight, before Goro appears. Johnny tells him that his opponent is huge, but he can win if he moves in, attacks, and gets out of Goro's range before Goro can hit back (This was definitely referred to by Johnny then yelling - Get out, get out! While Art's getting pummelled).
What's unfortunate is that not long after August 1995, I saw a pirated VHS copy of this film on sale before its release on VHS. Quality would've been poorer, of course, but I naively thought if I waited for the official release to support Threshold Entertainment, then surely the movie would've been whole.
Unfortunately not. Sigh...

That's it? Those two scenes?
Honestly, I think their omission was justified.
I cannot imagine the film with such a silly argument during the Sub/Scorp introduction. It would have ruined the pace, which is great the way it is.
And the "surprise" of Goro against Art Lean is perfect the way it is.

I understand what you're saying, but I must disagree.
I thought that the argument during the Scorpion/Sub-zero intro wouldve shown Sonya and Johnny not initially getting along, thus giving Outworld an advantage. Plus, it makes more sense when she seems annoyed while following him through the cobwebs in the island.
While I agree that Goro's intro against Art was perfect, Johnny advising Art beforehand shows that he still thought that Goro was beatable and it wasn't hopeless yet.
Granted, it's not hugely important scenes, but I never understood the act of paying money to film scenes, and then to not show them!

What're you talking about? Those scenes were never in the final print that was released into theaters.

Maybe not where you saw it, but definitely where I did (Philadelphia, PA).
But, does no one else recall this?

lol?
id like to think most of us were in elemenrary school at the time. ud have to ask one of the 30 to 40 year olds who were old enough at the time to remember all those silly details.

Here's my take on this based on my review of the first and 2nd pink drafts of the movie script, the movie novel (not digest) and the workprint:
"It's a guy thing" is a line in the movie but not at the time you said it happened. None of my evidence suggest the thing with Sony and Cage when confronted by Scorp/Sub happened at all.
As for the second thing with Goro, there was some evidence that Cage told Art, in one line to "make him come to you, don't let him grab you."
In the workprint only the "get a note from your mom and call in sick" line was filmed, that was evident. I also believe the workprint revealed something similar with Goro and Art as you described but I would have to review first.
I watched the movie in august 1995 and do not remember these scenes at all.
Perhaps over the years do you think you've confused some scenes you thought have happened?
I've had a 18 year old kid tell me for 2 years he's seen the MK trailer that played before streetfighter because a video of it had once been on Youtube. After 2 years I verified what he said was true but it wasn't until I released my edit of the trailer (which I own the 35mm version of this trailer, soon to be sold) that his version was slightly what he could recall (remember he did not have the trailer in his presence like I did on 35mm film).
Keep that in mind when you introduce new information to us - it'f very likely something has been lost in memory and cannot be recovered to a T.

For what it's worth, I was 19 when the first film came out and saw it 13 times in the theater.
None of the deleted scenes described here were in the final print.

Good replies here :)
Coincidentally, I was 19 when I saw this film in the cinema also.
I still maintain that, even after all these years, that my recollection isn't wrong, though. At least not the film that _I_ saw. I have seen the deleted scene of Johnny telling Art to call in sick online (which I'm glad was never used), but I never read the script or the novelisation past the dock scene (found the writing to be inferior to the movie and the characters much less charming than what we saw in the cinema), so the advice from Johnny to Art to not let Goro grab him sounds like what I'm recalling. That's way too big a coincidence.
Regarding the Sonya and Johnny argument in front of Sub-zero, definitely no confirmation found, but I can tell that the scenery jumps from when she points her handgun and Sub-zero freezes it. I know memory after 18 years isn't going to be reliable, but I recall saying this in December 1995 when first watching the VHS copy.
It's the same kind of scenery jump in MKA when Cyrax shoots a net towards Jax, and it impacts into Jax's arm. I felt the same about that scene, and much later saw a deleted scene where Jax tosses the net remnants onto the floor and yells “not today!“. It's this sense that there's a few seconds missing from between the scenes.
Threshold couldve clarified this one way or the other, but not surprisingly, never got an email reply from them

Threshold once ran the official MK website. Then they stopped updating it altogether in 2004 and it sat rotting for the next six years.

I remember Threshold's amazingly lazy handling of the MK franchise after 1995.
They also had an official site for MKA, which went nowhere.
What a waste....
But I had contacted them via the official Threshold email address, not the MK one. For what little that worth.
