Up until now it was merely speculative based on the 2018 script draft but now in a recent interview Ludi Lin (Liu Kang) broke the news the reboot is being envisioned for a movie universe.

What do you make of this revelation so early ?

I think gorostilllives needs to stop speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

Mr. Coe trashes the movie in one thread and then asks for discussion on another.

Dude, beat it. It's not the same film as the old movie. Maybe be a little open minded about the film and SEE it before you start making silly anger filled claims about how its 'doomed to fail'.

I think it's possible to be a news source and have an opinion on it at the same time, and I appreciate that.l

I would love the idea of a MK cinematic universe. And I also think that would be the best way to adapt a series like MK that has a complex overarching storyline, for the big screen. However, with what I am hearing about this movie so far, I am not too sure it it will be successful enough critically or from fans to warrant more movies to follow. If what I have heard about it is true then it strays far from the source material in some major aspects and completely deletes a lot of essential story and traits of a lot of characters. That combined with an OC star sounds like a messy film bound to disappoint fans.

On the other hand, maybe if this animated project is well received we could get a good animated series going that actually faithfully represents the storyline of Mortal Kombat.

I am all in for a Mortal Kombat Cinematic Universe if the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie is a success. I have been very excited to see the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie ever since the announcement. I also have concerns about the movie itself. I am hoping that the new Mortal Kombat movie will have a huge success at the box office including receiving a lot of positive reactions from Mortal Kombat fans. Hopefully the Mortal Kombat 2021 movie trailer arrive very soon.
