Sorry, winning Mortal Kombat does not give the champion immortality, just makes him ageless. There is a difference. Being ageless just means you do not age, you can be killed. After all if you are immortal, you are no longer qualified to fight in "Mortal" Kombat.

I like this discussion.
My personal opinion is that Cage/Kang/Blade are pretty much equal. The three survived Mortal Kombat, that means something. Shang chose Sonya, because she refused help, yet she was the most unsure of her skills. This was her weakness. I think when Raiden said she couldn't win, he was taking into account the fact that it would have been Sonya alone, with no help, unsure of her skills, in Outworld. I think he would have said the same for Kang and Cage.
Cage was second choice, because his love for Sonya that Shang saw as a weakness. Hey, it's what got Cage killed wasn't it? So he challenged Cage and would have morphed into Sonya and used that against him. Kang was last because he is most educated about Shang Tsung's tricks. Any three of them would have been mince if they didn't have the others there cheering them on.
Shang wouldn't have fought any of them íf he knew the outcome was he'd die. So that implies that alone none of them had discovered their powers. Any of them could have done it, but without the others, none of they could have.

WOW. Dude, that is was very well said. You managed to put the pieces on the right puzzle.
I agree on everything. Any of them could have won, they all had their main powers and weakness, even Liu Kang. But what you mentioned is true, they did survive Tsungs dark sorcery and warriors and even defeated Kahn.
I guess the outcome would had been the same with any of them, the 3 were the strongest of earth, but like every human, they had some weakness.
Excellent post.

Thanks, queve. Glad someone else sees it the same way.
I think that was the "moral" of the story, if it had one. That the power of friendship and facing your weaknesses is a strength that cannot be predicted.
In regards to Tsung cathcing Sonya to lure Cage there, I think that was what his intensions were. Kidnap Sonya, make Cage run to the rescue, transform into Sonya to play with Cage and bam, it's over. Tsung is champ again, but when Kang challenged him, he thought he could get rid of one of Raiden's fighters.

was there any actual proof that goro was the champion and not shang tsung.
it is possible that goro was just used to take out the strongest warriors while shang killed the weaker ones at the end of each tournament.
also, shang tsung was ageless in the movie and yet when he died--his body grew older and decayed.
so liu kang could be the champion and not johnny cage.
hmmm,something to think about.

Rayden says Shang Tsung is a former champion. Rayden is a god. I think Rayden knows what he's talking about.
Shang Tsung also says Goro is the current champion. And the reason why Shang Tsung is ageless is because he steals people's souls in order to keep his youth.

Well, yeah. The games clearly say Goro is the champion of the tournament, and that he has been the champion for over many many many years.

I would have to agree with KOMBAT in saying that Shang looked into the souls of both men. And I also agree with ghostdragon in saying Cage did get immortality by beating Goro. But it is also stated in MK Trilogy that when Cage was killed his path to the afterlife was blocked by the merger of Earth and Outworld. He then regains his soul and joins his friends to battle for Earth's survival.

But that was in the games. Not the films.
