I think they should 'remake' MK1. I say that lightly, the first MK movie was based around the first MK game. Well they should do that again, but set it like Battle Royal or The Condemned or Running Man whichever.

The warriors should be taken to the island where they are left to survive and meet up and such but they have to fight whomever challenges them to mortal Kombat, sort of like a magical force on the island. And It should be very gory and sort of a horror setting, and be true to MK. Who cares if the Hero Kills someone, it's a fight to the death and everyone except Liu Kang should die.

Yeah they can easily be resurrected from the Neatherrealm. Unless their soul was consumed by Shang Tsung. This way the actual Mk characteristics could get across. Such as Scorpion chasing Sub-Zero. Maybe SZ is afraid of Scorpion, like he's seeing a ghost. And Scorpion isn't actually fighting in Mortal Kombat because he's on neither Outworld or Earthrealms side. He just wants to kill Sub-Zero.

There wouldn't be many characters but like the MK1 storyline we could see Liu, Sonya and Johnny banding together and surviving. Raiden could be in it as a guid, and maybe even a test for Liu - this way it could reference Raidens actual playability and participation in the storyline. Also you could set up Reptile's appearance with a flawless victory and Fatality with a shadow over the moon. And also Ermac's appearance could be played off as some sort of mistake. We could have Shang Tsung in tuned to the island so he knows whenever a challenge is annouced.

The main problem, out of the many, from Mortal Kombat 1 was the hugely underwritten characters. But if you put them in a story then revolves around a theme - like horror, and the unknown - instead of an action Martial arts based movie then you have to have developed characters.

Also video game movie are given a fairly decent amount of money because companies expect them to rake it in, even though ore often than not they will be crap. Nowadays that amount of money can go to making the smallest differences, like making sets look like locations instead of sets, and Goro looking scary & semi-realistic. Instead of rubbery and hilarious.

Just some thoughts.

the original storyline MUST be keep intact...so avoid the entire part regarding the island, casual fights, etc

instead i agree on the gory aspect...we need a ry and Mature movie

BR was good... but it wasn't something I was able to endure more than once. Especially the movie.

I think MK movies need to go to CGI or cartoon like animation so the violence doesn't resemble a japanese film. If not... I think we all know which director should take of the film franchise (*cough* death proof *cough*)

The whole survival thing has become so cliché now... It already existed before Battle Royal, but BR made it popular and now the concept is all over the place. So I strongly disagree.

Besides, it has nothing to do with MK?
remake the original MK movie?

I think that is so very incorrect.

I wouldn't mind seeing the original movie remade, if it stuck to a few rules:

1. It follows the storyline of the game even better than the original movie. Changes would be Sub-Zero and Scorpion being from Earthrealm, with some sort of emphasis placed on their rivalry, including an awesome fight scene between the two in the movie, where Scorpion brutally kills Sub-Zero, who of course becomes Noob Saibot.

You'd also have Kano heading to the island to steal the riches, with Sonya Blade tracking him down with her team, only to have them all captured by Shang Tsung, and only released if she participates in the tournament. These troops could then be forced to compete, given their own identities and stuff (Weren't there a few characters in the MK: Special Forces game? They could be used here) and killed by characters like Goro, Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, etc. to establish them as cool characters. The problem with a MK movie, is that the games are so violent, but no continuity needs to be had by that. To showcase how violent these characters are, you need to establish some sort of outside source that they can beat around.

2. The actors were good. Try and get some legitimate martial artists, and some big name stars. There is no need to put a Christopher Walken under a Sub-Zero mask, so obviously they would be a legitimate martial artist. That is one reason why a Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion fight would be so cool.

3. The movie didn't try to bite off too much. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation did that. The original movie also blended the MK1 and MK2 stories together, so to be fair, MK: Annihilation was sort of fucked over from the start, story-line wise. Set the movie in MK1's plot, and keep it there. That means no Kitana, and no Outworld venturing, unfortunately. That should help save with some of the budgeting, at least.

4. The director took care with it, loved the games, and actually wanted to create a good movie. Not just a way to make cash, or a way to exploit the game. Christopher Nolan took Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight, and elevated them beyond the realm of what people expected of Batman. There is no reason a director could not do the same thing for Mortal Kombat.

I'd actually like to see a three movie arc based on the "Shao Kahn" era of the Mortal Kombat games (where I think the story is simplest and the strongest).

Develop the characters. That is the important thing. For example: Sonya and Kano's relationship could be really interesting on the big screen. In MK1, they can fight, and Kano actually defeats Sonya (which I think would be a shocker). Kano spares Sonya, because he wants her to live knowing what Kano has done to her. Both are captured for MK2, and they actually converse about why each does what they do, and they never "agree," per se, but it allows the two insight into each other. Then in MK3, the two characters fight again, with Kano looking to win, but then Sonya throwing him off the building, leading to Kano joining with Shao Kahn.

You could also do something with Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Have the two fight in the first movie, to decide who represents the Shaolin Temples in Mortal Kombat. Neither wins the fight, but Kung Lao decides that if they fight for too much longer, both will be hurt, and thus Earthrealm doesn't have a chance. He bows out to Liu Kang, who ends up winning the thing. In MK2, Kung Lao finds himself attacked by Baraka, and unprepared for his Outworld techniques. Lao realises that Baraka is just as unprepared for his Earthrealm martial arts, and manages to fend him off, only to find the Shaolins slaughtered. Liu Kang returns, and Kung Lao feels it is his responsible to avenge things. Lao kills Baraka in the movie, whereas Liu Kang fights and spares Shao Kahn, keeping a pure soul. Kung Lao's impurity and anger become a concern of Raiden's, and it is confirmed in the third movie when Lao fights Shao Kahn, but is defeated and killed, fueling Liu Kang to defeat Kahn, this time killing the tyrant, and giving us a climatic end to the story.

And that's only scraping the ice-berg. Some of the fights that could be created for the arc would be fantastic. I'm just imaging the younger Sub-Zero sparing Reptile in MK2 (we know he defeated but didn't kill an opponent). This would make sense, because Sub-Zero was after Shang Tsung, and Reptile was Shang Tsung's bodyguard in MK1. Reptile takes notice of this mercy, and when he finds out Shao Kahn destroyed his race, he teams up with Sub-Zero and Scorpion (who would be protecting Sub-Zero in MK3) to fight against Sektor, Cyrax and Smoke -- Sub-Zero's soulless pursuers. The film-maker could make a statement about how the human soul is a concept which connects us all, no matter our most dramatic differences. Plus, a fight between the original three ninjas and the cyberninjas would be like MK porn for me.
