One possibility is that this season will focus on the preliminary rounds with flashbacks in the episode for the sake of developing the characters of the new roster before the bouts and the movie be a strictly linear take on the semi-finals and finals of the tournament where the key characters begin their interactions.

I don't think there was any mention of the tournament when they talked about the movie.

What I think is the second season of Legacy is about Shang Tsung's tournament,and the movie is its sequel about Shao Kahn's invasion of Earth.Also,some time ago,Kevin published script dialogue FROM THE MOVIE with Kabal and Jax about to fight,and it only could happen during invasion of Shao Kahn like in MK3.

But we all got to sit and wait and watch,I guess...

So a remake of Annihilation huh?...

It is just my theory though,I just think that the ENTIRE season 2 is enough to cover MK tournament,and as much as I love MK2,there is no need for another tournament adaptation which happens in Outworld. So yeah,I think that new movie is about invasion.

Ktanch already confirmed that the two projects are totally different and indipendent to each other, so we can have a tournament in Legacy and the new movie as well.
