First of all let me bore you with a confession, I entered the realm of Mortal Kombat via movies not games. I heard it was the first game-based movie (back in 1995) that didnt flop so i checked it out and boy was I not disappointed, especially that I'm a fan of Cary Hiroyoki Tagawa. And although Annihilation (1998) wasn't quite as good but I was hooked into it. I played the theme song on my pc almost daily. It's probably the only non-Batman game that I check and follow its progress, but again I rarely play, as much as watch its adaptations... well I kindda like MK4 to play every now and then, but it doesn't count.
Now that I've ranted about how i gotten into it I'll get to the point which is as the title suggests the short-lived TV series Conquest. I had watched its pilot back in 1998 and sadly didnt have the chance to follow it, But I thought it was way better than the movies and allowed for more character development since it started from the beginnings with Liu Kang's anscestor Kung Lau. I also loved Siro (Daniel Burnhardt) and Taja (Kritanna Loken) even though I never heard of them as characters before.
I never knew why it was cancelled but I've always wanted to pick up the dvd to watch it, and i just did! And as much as I was thrilled to watch it I was like "What the f....furious " at the end of the final episode. I mean fine I knew those three weren't going to defeat Chao Khan or else Liu Kang would be jobless centuries later..but to see Raiden humiliated in the final scene???? I mean fine Khan wins but atleast it could have ended with Raiden giving him serious ass-whooping then leaving him alive so they would fight another tournament with new champions. Not to mention of course that it was all too rushed and hasted and those cloaked invincible assassins were never explained, i mean if Khan had them all along why didn't he just use them and finish the whole thing earlier? It was so stupidly anti-climactic and far-fetched for the events of 21 episodes to be just wiped clean in one single dumb finale. and let's not talk about Scorpion and Sub Zero and Noob Saibot who were never mentioned again.
i know this whole moaning post of mine seems like an old relic for you guys and i know I don't really know much about mortal kombat but I really really love the concept of the game and wish they make a decent adaptation for Tv or the big screen.
plz tell me your sentiments on the stupid ending of Mortal Kombat Conquest.
RIP Lau, Siro and Taja wow

One of the greatest finales to a TV show, ever.

I didn't find it to be anti climatic at all. The theme of Kung Lao's visions of a near-future apocalypse was there since the first episode, and every once in a while it happened again. Shao Kahn's anger being fueled by the constant betrayal was superbly done as well. First Shang Tsung betrays him, then Vorpax, then Quan Chi, then Reptile... Kahn becomes paranoid progressively towards the show, and that's what the last 3 episodes are all about. It's not like it all just happened in the last episode like you made it seem.

I loved the progression of the show, just like Kahn got angered more and more, so did the forces of good. Kung Lao starts the show as a pacifist, even going so far as to butt heads with Siro over battling the Black Dragon. With more and more enemies popping up in every episode, allies and friends getting killed, towards the end of the show Kung Lao has grown into a more vicious and cold hearted being. That final moment in the episode ''In Kold Blood'' where he says one day he'll kill all his enemies and Siro and Taja just stand there staring at Kung Lao, almost like they fear him, really helped show how the characters have grown.

Regarding the plot holes of the episode... Shadow Priests not being explained, etc. Don't blame that episode, shit like that happens all the time in MKC. All the time. Serpent and the Ice is infamous because of it's infinite whirlpool of plot holes and just straight up dumb shit. In Kold Blood's one of my favorite episodes but it also has a major plot hole... etc etc. It happens throughout the whole show.

The ending to the show was not canon though since in the original storyline, the original Kung Lao was killed by Goro and his soul stolen by Shang Tsung. But it was a good show. I finished watching it on YouTube about a month ago and I loved it. grin

It's a shame, there was a bunch of storylines that had yet to be concluded.
You never found out what happened to Sub-Zero, Smoke, Jola, Noob Saibot and Master Cho.

I do know that had the show been allowed to continue, the 3 cyborg characters Sektor, Cyrax, and Smoke probably would not have been used since they were not introduced till many centuries later in the storyline of the Mortal Kombat universe.

With WB soaking up Midway and New Line, think that they will release MK: Conquest on dvd/blu-ray or does Threshold still have the righs to the show?

Ha, I seriously doubt it'd be very pretty on BluRay, but I hope we can see a DVD set. Threshold has a history of sitting on their properties, though, so I'm not going to hold my breath. I think the easiest way to find out would be to shoot WB off an e-mail directly. Dunno if they'd respond, but it'd be worth a try.

Watch the bad special effects and fake sets in Blu Ray? No thanks.

Really want that soundtrack though.

I'm with you batman. I just finished watching the first season on DVD. My boyfriend has it in his stash and said I might be interested in it. I've never really played the game given that I'm pretty hopeless at fighting games but I was surprised at how the series consumed me. I wished they continued the show cause I, like you, found the last episode a bit of a downer. I get the whole apocalypse thing was inevitable but I was disappointed at how short the actual series was. I also thought it was pretty random how Raiden decided to go on 'vacation' with blondie at the brink of earth realm's destruction. Bu aside from that I liked the direction the show was going. i got to admit though, the fighting scenes were awesome but I always cracked up at how budget it could be. For example, they didn't really hide the stunt men/women too well. It was so easy to tell that it wasn't the actors doing it. I know I know that's what stunt people are for, but whatever.
I just can't believe it took me over a decade to discover the whole MK thing. I even went so far to purchase the two MK movies... Although I'm so used to the whole Kung Lao, Taja and Siro storyline it's hard to get my head around the Liu Kang, Sonya, Johnny characters, Anyways that's my little two cents. I hope they would re-create the show agai n or at let Raiden defeat Shao Kahn ( I know I know - it didn't happen that way, cause if it did there'd be no point in the Liu Kang thing but a girl can dream :). I am a sucker for happy endings.

Kristanna Loken will be coming to a convention near me soon. I LOVE Mortal Kombat Conquest much more than I should. I actually find the overall low production values of the show kind of endearing! Some of the writing was actually pretty good, and man, did I ever have a crush on Raiden! Still kind of do! Anyway, I was thinking about making a Taja cosplay for when I meet Kristanna. Thoughts? Also, I make stupid MK Conquest videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAT2DvG0jLA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwFe-kKrG2c I'm sorry...it's what I do.

I just thought it was stupid at the end of the series how all the characters were killed so fast and easily without putting up much of fight against the shadow priests or whatever they were called. They could of atleast made the fights more epic and last a little longer. Just seemed too rushed. But regardless I still enjoyed watching this series and I wish they'd put it on Blu-Ray.

The series ended brilliantly and was set up for a series two where the Elder Gods or Vorpax would have stepped in.. or revealed it to be all Kung Lao's visions.. I can't remember which..

But they never planned to finish up when they did, it was just two networks wanted the rights, so took The Threshold to court.. which sent The Threshold bankrupt..

Yeah, the series was meant to continue into a second season. It was cancelled after the final episode aired. I've heard that either the events in the season finale were Kung Lao's vision (a 'dream episode', if you will) or that everyone was going to be brought back to life by the Elder Gods (since Shao Kahn broke 'the rules'). At any rate, the writers had every intention of keeping the show going, and that would have required keeping Kung Lao alive.

Fans of Twin Peaks know the feeling: does Cooper ever escape the Black Lodge? The same thing that happened to Lynch happened to MKC.

Anyway, MKC was not meant to be canon, but it did try to flesh out characters in interesting and mostly genuine ways. Midway consulted on the series, by the way. It's probably best that the show portrayed the events before MK1. Presumably, this afforded the writers more freedom than the established canon would have allowed.

I'm a big fan of MKC, and I liked it better than both films. Everything 'MK' suffers from poor writing, but there were parts of MKC that were handled very well. Granted, most of the episodes revolved around rather petty plot devices. I mean, seriously, Vorpax is always just around the corner? But on the whole, the writers did a good job of making the audience really like the characters. Siro, Kung Lao, and Taja worked well together, both as a cast and within the story. I think the final episode did a good job of shocking fans and upsetting the balance audiences expect from a TV show. The good guys were dead. That's only supposed to happen when an actor wants off a show.

The show did a great job of fleshing out Shao Kahn's character. MK always portrays him as a one-dimensional blood-thirsty despot. By contrast, the show really tracks his fall into paranoia. His brutality and ruthlessness increases as he realizes the extent of treachery in his own ranks. Contra MK Armageddon (where he's basically a big drooling idiot), he's actually clever in MKC, and the depth of his strategy is revealed in the final episodes. The conversation between Raiden and Shao Kahn in the portal is dramatic, well-written, and, frankly, 'klassic.' His sexual lust for his 'daughter' Kitana is weird and unnerving, just as it should be.

The show does well with Kung Lao also. We really get a sense of hopelessness regarding his task. After every victory, his prospects somehow seem worse. The warriors that come to train for MK (Kung Lao's mission) are traitors in disguise. The only real ally that arrives to help is framed and murdered almost just as soon as he arrived. With enemies that can shape-shift and camouflage, it proves impossible to trust anyone. Especially since I knew how the series was going to end before I watched it (internet spoilers), everything seemed to point to despair and failure. The whole series reiterated a conversation between Raiden and Kung Lao in an early episode in which Kung Lao says: "maybe I'm not the one to save earth realm." Since we all know he's not the one, the dramatic irony here is intense.

The series had a long list of flaws, but most of these are common the genre. Seriously, how many women fight in bra and panties?

All that aside, MKC was a worthwhile show. The martial arts work was great, even though that seemed to be going out of style by the late 90s. Taja and Siro were great characters. It's a shame the series died without much of a protest. Even now, most people don't even know it exists. I'd like to see MK movies or TV shows branch off the beaten path somewhat, a little but not too far off into uncharted terrain. A good story is about more than just good vs. evil; it's about characters coming to grip with and making sense out of their world. There's plenty of that to be had in the MK universe. wow

I really enjoyed Conquest. By the second half of the series, it really hit a stride. Like the movies, it was a specific version of MK that didn't necessarily mesh 1:1 with the world of the games, but it had a lot of positive energy and investment in some of the colourful qualities that were trademarks of the series. Above all else it was a lot of fun! I give the DVDs a whirl every so often.

Yea you can actually see its Goro, its not the movie Goro though, it looks like CGI, I actually thought they would have used the Movie one, since they borrowed things from the 2 movies.
