Rumors are going around that when Mortal Kombat 3 hits theaters, New Line Home Entertainment will be putting together Special Editions of Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation DVDs. These will have behind the scenes(making of) and atleast one will have a director's & producer's commentary. Expect there to be cast and crew interviews as well.

Where's the source? This is the first time I heard this. Plus New Line will NOT distribute MK3... Technically they can't put a new version since they don't have the rights, but who knows.

I hope it's true though.

New Line owns the rights to the first 2 films on dvd. They can't make anymore new movies(such as sequels or what have you.), but they are allowed to go back to movies they already own and put out new editions of them on homevideo. Here's an example to help you understand: It's just like what Paramount is doing with New Line Cinema. Paramount own Friday the 13th's part 1-8. They sold the Jason character to New Line. New Line then made Part 9 and then Freddy Versus Jason. When FvsJ was a hit, Paramount stated that they were rereleasing special edition versions of Parts 1-8 on DVD, but they can't make anymore Jason movies. Get how it works?

I see what you're saying. The thing is this is the first time I heard this. I hope you're right. Can you supply a source by any chance?

There's no exact source, but speculation and talk from people who are dvd reviewers who have contact with people at the companies where they decide when and what will be coming out etc.. For one, New Line kept the rights to the first 2 movies, and they know threshold has a script and is getting the 3rd one going in pre-production. So they must've kept them for a reason, they'll cashin weather or not mk3 is success because people will be interested in the other 2 movies when it comes out again. Either way, they won't lose money if Mk3 is a bomb. They no longer risk in investing in the production of a movie. Plus: New Line has done this before. There are quite a few deleted scenes from the first Mortal Kombat as well.

True, but if it's a bomb and people aren't interested in MK3, what makes you think they'll be interested in the previous 2?

May I ask how you know all this? No disrepect btw, I really want to see special editions of the first two movies, but you're spittin out info with no proof. I hope you're right...

---How do you know this?---

When movie studios license rights for a company to do sequels, they never sell what they already have in terms of made films(unless they are going bankrupt). Robert Shaye Chairman of New Line, said himself "We no longer hold any subsequent rights" which means they no longer own any rights to any films that come out from this point on, but they still own the previous films' rights.

---True, but if it's a bomb and people aren't interested in MK3, what makes you think they'll be interested in the previous 2?---

DVD and home video are different than boxoffice, movies bomb all the time at the boxoffice and can be #1 on home video sales for weeks. It's common logic that whenever a sequel to a movie comes out that was popular, people always go out and rent the previous movies before hand or afterwards, in this case especially the first movie since it was a hit. I doubt anyone will remember the 2nd, but that too most likely would be rented since no one saw it and interest would be sparked.

...Such as?

New Line has waited to release special editions plenty of times before, example would be Jason goes To Hell being released with Jason X.

I said there are rumors going around that i've read. It seems legit that eventually there will be a special edition of a movie that was #1 at the boxoffice. The last time this movie was released on DVD it was 2000. 4 years ago. We're do a special edition any day now. Take allook at the trailer for Deleted scenes from the first one.

There definitely is a deleted scene for the first MK; in the trailer Liu Kang yells "You can't run from me, Shang!" and Shang Tsung replies "I don't need to run!"

This is nowhere in the actual movie. I'm sure there's plenty more deleted scenes they COULD add if they wanted to; however I never heard this rumor before at all. Do you have a link to a DVD/movie website or even a message board where you've read this?

What you're saying does sound legit and doesn't come off as BS (good thing, b/c I was disappointed with the lack of features for both MK dvdz).

My only question is where did you hear this? This is a first for nearly everyone in this board. A source would be very very helpful.

Well a new DVD for the MK films would be nice. So I hope this is true. If there is a commentary for MKA, I hope whoever does the commentary will mention why the movie was made the way it was. You know, terrible. Also like why some characters were recasted, why Paul Anderson didn't direct and why Kevin Droney didn't write the script.

I bet deleted scenes from the first one will be good. I've seen photos from the first one that weren't in the movie.

When we think about deleted scenes for the MK films here. I wonder if they'll show those scenes with Stryker and Kabal and the one at the end where Shinnok and Quan Chi were talking. Well I don't think those deleted scenes would've made it any better. Chances are (just like Shinnok) Quan Chi, Kabal and Stryker probably didn't look a thing the way they did in the games.

if they were to re release it, then the third movie would not be to far off an idea, would it?

so if indeed, it gets re released, then, there is a big probability of a third movie...

Well, if what you say is true, then the DVD special features will actually be better. MK practically had almost NO bonuses on it.

And if the deleted scenes are true, then they should add an option to mix in the deletes with the original film. Who knows. Judging by the amount of scenes that were cut out of MKA, including those scenes in there might actually make the movie DECENT if not GOOD (to you guys, I mean. I actually like the movie)!

You liked MKA? Man I thought that movie was embarassing, not only to me, but to the creators of the game, the one's who made the movie and the actors that were in it.

I thought MKA was an embarassment to mankind.

Anyway, some special editions of MK and MKA would be cool. The MK DVD only had the trailer (the portuguese DVD, anyway), but the MKA one actually had some nice extras. Interviews, the trailer, some advertisements... Still, could use a making of, or deleted scenes or audio commentary or something.

Yes, I did like MKA.
Dude, I was SIX at the time, go figure.

I can think of many, many deleted scenes from MKA, and I only know the trailer's cut scene with Liu and Shang.

Actually, I have seen the picture of Quan Chi from MKA and I can tell you he looks EXACTLY like in the games.

However, the guy that played him doesn't speak any English and he wasn't given any lines (I read this in an interview somewhere).

Also, to my knowledge, the Stryker/Kabal scene was never even filmed. I don't think they ever cast people for these roles or anything. I doubt there was even a scene mentioned in the script! Just that one line with Rain mentioning them.
