I'm including this here because John himself ties Sub-Zero's inspiration as important with the film since the 2021 film will feature Sub-Zero as a major antagonist: https://twitter.com/therealsaibot/status/1374750434011668482

Yea or maybe Ed is locked behind an NDA? Ed last talked about this movie last Fall, not much if any since then.

Honestly John's departure is why I quit Mortal Kombat until 2011. The MK lore WAS pretty much John all along and Ed was just a designer. The lore really crapped itself after he left and if I recall correctly his departure created quite the stir on this very forum, with some fans embracing the move and others like me pissed by it. Then Midway completely bankrupting in 2006 and I was honestly relieved and most of us figured Midway kept making piss-poor decisions, kind of like WB is being accused of with the whole Zach Snyder deal right now.

MKDA came out around 2002 when I graduated high school / college at the same time and while that was a positive time, the suckiness of MKDA and the Elizabeth Smart shit and the TNA BS and WCW/WWE BS was really a drag on me pop-culturally. I wasn't ready to see things change so drastically and it affected me.
