A workprint is a post-production version of the film. Workprints may contain raw footage without CGI effects, missing or alternate scenes, etc., from the retail version. They, as in this case, may also be of poor quality.

A screener is a full version of a film but made available freely for promotional and pre-screening purposes by film critics and video retailers to determine whether or not they wish to purchase the film. At the time of the MK release, movies usually cost around $60 per unit (that's one movie) as they were not available to the general public till a couple of months later. http://rapidshare.com/files/453732526/SCREENER.flv

So what exactly is on each video? As cool as they sound, I don't want versions that have less material, or just look like junk copies. From what I gathered, there's a few deleted lines of dialogue, but thats it. A Paul Anderson rarely has deleted scenes (barring Event Horizon)... Anderson tends to delete the script as he films to trim it down, rather than filming everything.

So the possibility of there being anything interesting is slim. But I could be wrong.

Download them and find out. These are mainly for collectors interested in having a working copy of this stuff not necessarily the general MK fanbase.

Thanks for this! Just checked out the workprint, and it's quite interesting.

Footage-wise, it seems pretty similar. Most of the changes are in the audio, with a lot of on-set dialogue used as opposed to post-production ADR. Also, while all of the unoriginal music such as Techno Syndrome remain he same, it seems as if George S. Clinton only completed a portion of his score when this cut was put together, as I noticed a LOT of different music where his score would normally be.

Hell, the fight between Cage and Scorpion in the forest used music from Terminator 2 tongue

Thanks again! I love seeing "work in progress" versions of movies!

Awesome! I love seeing workprints, and there's actually a few dialog bits I like better from the workprint such as Johnnie's line "I wonder if they have room service?!" instead of "Can't wait to see what the bathrooms look like."

This definitely shows how much the score can add or detract from the movie. I can tell a lot of the score in this version was based more on the style of the actual game's music, but I think the finished score was much better, so props to Clinton on that.

Goro's voice is very unfinished, kinda funny to hear normal human voice and grunts at times.

The grunts from the on-set audio also sound much more natural. Listening to the ones done in ADR now sound over-done. I can see why the dubbed Scorpion/Cage though to get rid of Chris Casamassa's voice.

Johnnie's dialog when they arrived in Outworld was a little more fitting. "Outworld, population: Zero... What a shithole!" -- His "I'm surrounded by people who probably wanna kick my ass" line was a little out of place considering he wasn't exactly surrounded by people.

The ONLY thing that I really hated about the movie was Liu's annoying yell when he squashes Reptile with his foot. That was a relief to not hear that.

Was hoping to see the omitted "You can't run from me Tshang!" bit from the trailer. Overall, pretty good version. Kinda weird hearing different music and dialog in places. Thank a lot for sharing this!

The interesting thing about that is that the song they used for that fight, "Zero Signal" by Fear Factory, actually samples a sound effect from Terminator 2. The part near the beginning when you see the playground, and right before the nuke blows up. They sampled that sound at the beginning of the song. That sample actually made it into the final movie, when Cage first arrives in Scorpion's lair.

I wonder if they were aware of that.

You know, I always noticed that as well! However, that's more of a matter on Fear Factory's part, as that sound sample is also on the track for Zero Signal itself.

And even 16 years later, no matter how many times I watch that fight, it still isn't enough!

Right, but I'm wondering if Anderson (or whoever was in charge of the soundtrack) was aware of the fact that that sound effect is from Terminator 2. Whether they were aware of that when they said, "We'll use a placeholder from T2 here, and then kick in Zero Signal which starts with a sound effect from T2."
Obviously Fear Factory were aware of that fact when they used that, (and 2 other) industrial T2 sound effects on their album.

About the Terminator sound:

It's very likely they were aware. As you can hear during the audio commentary, Larry explained that they were not originally going to give Kano a faceplate because he would look similar to other characters they have done, (him and Alison Savitch), referencing Termninator.

Perhaps it was their way to salute or recognize that film?

From the laserdisc. I uploaded it in this forum, under the Behind the Scenes... thread, which is a long post of MK movie goodies.
