I don't think they retconed it much. I think it plays out pretty the same and then he happens to fight Ermac later on, during the tournament.

Ok looks pretty cool. Excited to see it. So Kitana is supposed to think she is part Tarkatan too? Like Mileena? I may be wrong on this but isnt there some lore than Shao Khan is Tarkatan or part tarkatan or something?

Im glad they are making Kitana and Mileena look hot finally, something they kinda lacked in the first season.

What it was, is that when they were making MK2, one of the unused concepts was that everyone in Outworld, including Kahn, would be Tarkatan. They decided not to do that though, so they could have some variety.

The actual canon story is that Shao Kahn is a god of Outworld who gave up his godhood so he could rule over the realm instead of protecting it, and the Tarkatans were created by crossbreeding Outworlders with demons, and Kahn himself is probably the one who made them, so that he would have an army to replace Onaga's, who all committed suicide and became mummies when Onaga died.
