I believe that you are right with the number of fighters Goro fought, but you're a tad off on the last dude. His name was indeed Art, but he was one of Johnny Cage's friends who decided to come along with him after he learned that Johnny was competing in Mortal Kombat (neither of them knew it was a mystical tournament to the death at that point, however). During his fight with Goro, you can see Johnny trying to help him out from the sidelines when the camera cuts to him, though I dunno why Sonya would cry out in horror when he got killed (there's no indication that she knew him, as well. Then again, maybe after seeing so many people die so quickly to Goro, Sonya just couldn't stand the hopelessness of the situation that Art's death represented).

They really weren't friends. They knew of each other but they weren't friends and Art didn't go into the tournament because of Cage. Watch it again. When Johnny goes up to him he say Hey, you're Art Lean? or something like that and talks about seeing a fight of his and Art says he's seen Cage's films and he couldn't have faked those moves.
