If there was something I learned from Batman Begins it was this...
If there truly was gonna be anothing Mortal Kombat movie made in the future it wouldn't be a sequel to MKA or a remake. It would be a new version/universe of it's own that wouldn't have anything to do with the films New Line Cinema owned. Like if Christopher Nolan were to helm an MK film, he would start over with a prequel to the first film and he would also ignore things that were given out in the first MK movie. If you ask my opinion this is what should be done.
A sequel to MKA has only become more and more unlikely over time b/c as the games have gone on so many characters and storylines have been added and most of the actors from the first 2 films are getting too old to reprise their roles. The right thing to do would be to start over with a new MK movie franchise with a whole new cast and crew.
So what do you all think?
What I just said is the probably the only way the next MK film can be successful at the box office. A sequel to MKA would only make audiences not wanna see it. Maybe this is why they didn't make a sequel to Batman and Robin.

This is a good idea.
Seeing as how they mentioned the Great Kung Lao (as Liu Kang's ancestor) in the first film a few times, perhaps a prequel movie could be based around him.
They could use the same island setting as the first movie, but not the same stages, just perhaps have a few remnants for nostaligic purposes (i.e. the beach they arrive on, the dragon boat, the main hall etc.)
The only problem I see is that it would be essentialy the same story as the first MK movie, except with Kung Lao in Liu Kang's place.
However, if they got around that somehow, or possibly made the movie span the two tournaments the Great Kung Lao was involved in (1: Where he defeats Shang Tsung in the 10th tournament. 2: Where he is defeated by Goro) then possibly it would work.

It's a good concept. Something that was fanatastic in the first movie, and really lame in the 2nd - was the setting. In the first, we see MK as it is supposed to be, a mystical, ancient tournament - held on an island between worlds.
The 2nd had potential, but instead of setting it on a deserted, devastated Earth, it was set all over the place...
If your idea was used, the dark aura that surrounds the Mortal Kombat tournament would return, and setting / atmosphere is hugely important in any movie.

Yeah that's right.
In fact it felt like MKA had no setting at all. What you saw happen in disaster films like The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, and War of the Worlds should've been done with MKA. They should've showed humans/extras from around the world getting attacked by Outworld's extermination squads or having their souls taken from their bodies. If your gonna make a movie about something that's trying to destroy the world at least put some real drama and excitement into it. Don't make it look more like some power ranger rip-off for kids.

See i hated out they redid the entire batman thing. There was no reason for a remake cause well there was no reason for a restart. The first batman movie was great. And my point being the first mk movie was great. There would and should be no reason on earth for them to restart the entire series well movie series of mk.For the ppl who was old enough to see mk out in the theatres like i was they would totally agree that it sould be a sequal to the first mk film but not no damn restart. And personally i wouldnt mind seeing a sequal to mka if they could do it well.

Sorry you don't agree but I'm just telling you what Hollywood probably thinks is the right thing to do. Other than Batman, The Punisher and Fantastic Four also went throught restarts that had nothing to do with the previous films.

Yeah perheps, but i seriously doubt that they would restart a franchise that is barly 10years old.First Batman movie came out in 1989 and mk came out in 1995.Its to soon for something like that. The punisher well i am not sure when that came out only i know it was in the 80s.But I dont see them restarting a video game movie franchise.Inplus honestly, its to much of risk right now for hollywood to do that with a franchise that is based on video games, when their not making money off movies right now has it is and video game movies arent doing to well right now besides the Resident Evil movies.

Batman Begins is showing what the other movies really didn't show, Batman's origin. I like the idea of startin MK over....but have it be the events that takes place before MK1 the original movie and have the new "series" end with the beginnin of MK1 the original movie then do a true sequel to the MK1. An Origin of how Shao Kahn takin over realms, Kung Lao defeating Shang, Goro Defeating Kung Lao...pretty cool if you ask me.

Technically, they already made a prequel to the MK movies. MK: Conquest was about Kung Lao from 500 years ago etc. and it followed the movies' storyline.
I think they should restart the MK movies from scratch. Especially since Annihilation butchered the story so horribly, but I'd like to see the story and characters closer to the games. I would like to see Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Shao Kahn, Ermac, and many others portrayed accurately for a change.

Alright than.
For those of you who agree to the topic of this thread. We should consider writing letters to Threshold Entertainment telling them that this is what we recommend. We have to say that restarting the MK films from scratch is the right thing to do and that making an MK3 movie is just gonna be pointless after the bombing of MKA which was almost a decade ago.

I agree with sonicherosfan1 and XiahouDun84. It is a little too soon to restart the franchise, and the sad thing is, there is no other way around it.
The only way to ensure MK's success in the movie genre is to make the story as close to the games, because the game storyline is what makes MK, MK. However chances of that are very slim, due to the fact that video game/comics to movie adaptions don't always coincide with one another. Look at Spider-Man, X-Men, Resident Evil just to name a few. I mean they may not be far off differences but just noticeable ones.
I heard that a movie based on MKDA is what the directors would want, however that couldn't happen due to the underdevelopment of Scorpion's character which is an integral part to DA's storyline. It is true that starting the franchise over is the best bet. Basing it entirely off the games is even a greater insurance, however starting a franchise over so soon is a bit risky. With the new games as far along the story as they are, the movies would have a long time catching up.
I always thought a CG tv show of MK would be sweet, using models of the characters from the DA and Deception commercials would be sweet. I mean imagine watching a 30 min tv show of the Baraka Mileena fight in MKD. Just my thoughts.

I thought they should do it like X-Men; Have a main movie come out (X-Men 1,2, and 3), then have it break up into different stories if it's successful (Wolverine, Magneto, the other one based on the teens of Xavier's school). I thought they could do that with the more popular characters. If they get a good writer and director, this could happen, especially since the MK genre has been booming this whole year...

No making it like X-Men would not be a good idea to me. The X-Men movies were the most unfaithful adaptations b/c of the direction they went in. I would not be happy if the new MK movies do what x-men did.

This is an excellent thread. Kudos to you. I too have been thinking that the MK movies should pull a Batman Begins and start fresh. I'd also like it for the storyline to be accurate to the games and such as it should be. They would have to go quite in-depth to make it good and have a good enough length. Something like 1 and a half hours isn't enough. I'd say something like 2 and a half to 3 hours is better.
That would be a good idea. And they could do alot more with the fights, given the technology, such as Sub-Zero's freeze, scorpions spear, ect. give the fights a fast, frantic, Matrix style feel. And the mystical, darker tone would bring back the fans. after damn near destroying it with MK2. It would be great to see everything, and even get some background info. on how the tournament started, becuase the first movie basically went on the notion that people allready knew what was going on. what with mentioning Kung Lao and the whole Mortal Kombat Tournament.

I'm just saying that they should have a main MK movie, and if that's successful, make a SubZero or Scorpion movie, to branch it out. And if you think X-Men was the most unfaithful adaption, re-watch MKA...

I meant to say X-Men was the most unfaithful "comic" adaptation. Yes, I'm well aware that MKA is the most unfaithful video game adaptation ever made. That's one of the main reasons why I hated it.
I see a lot more potential in MK for novelization, animation, or made-into-a-series-ation than I do another live action film. First, because with all all technology we have today, there is still only so much a human can do, and it's hard to go past that without looking extra stupid. Liu Kang/Sony'a bycicle kick in an example of this. In novels and animation, both of those aren't problems.
The reason I say a series would be better than a movie is because Mortal Kombat is getting more and more characters, and there are only a few without sizable fan bases (I don't see too many Mileena and Baraka fans out there, but other than that, characters are at least cult classics). Even Mileena and Baraka aren't really underfanned, either. So, when you make a movie centering around a couple of the characters, usually involving them killing others of the characters, it's very bad, and going to piss a large number of people off.
In the series, longer character interaction, subplots, and even new storylines could appear. Kung Lao and Liu Kang's rivalry could actually appear as something that isn't nebulous, as could Kitana's romantic interests. Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Rain all going after her could provide both dramatic tension between the characters and comic relief. It also makes for an easy and believable plot device. How much are Liu Kang and Kung Lao going to trust Rain if he's after the same girl as they are.
Sub-Zero's difficulty in battling Noob Saibot and Smoke because they're both people he once knew and cared for could be brought out, and we could actually get a look into Shokan culture, or what the netherworld is like.

Well that series you're talking about would have to come after the movies.Because mortal kombat conquest is the prequle to the movie, people seams to forget about that a whole lot.
