Dialogue transcripts were very popular in the early days of MK media. I happened upon an early-release screener copy of MKII... is there any fan interest in having one of these done?
.
Anyway since I got a second look of the film, I wanted to give my Second Look Perspective:
.
1. After the film's introduction (the Fall of Edenia), exposition moves VERY FAST. Literally, between fights most of the story and reasons why the fighters do what they do is VERY FAST. For example, what is the role of Shinnok's amulet in the film? This one's easier because it was visually represented throughout the film. BUT why did Earthrealm fighters go to the Tarkatan colony? There was a reason and that reason given was very quick.
.
2. The movie is full of fights. Sometimes the fights contain exposition but again that's usually between. However, the film includes two lengthy fight montages to cover multiple fights. Furthermore, sometimes these fights break up into many against one or many against many.
.
3. "It just happens without reason." Suddenly Quan Chi appears in the movie. Where was the buildup? Where was the build-up for Bi-Han - he appears only to suddenly reappear in one scene before his fight scene.
.
4. The fights were too fast but the fatalities just as well. When Liu Kang was killed, we didn't get any moments to mourn. It happened and immediately without question he just becomes a fire god vowing he'll return.
.
5. What is the meaning of Jade's staff suddenly going green and eventually her hair completely going away? Was this stated or just implied? Yes, this film moved that fast.
.
6. Did you notice Shang Tsung and Quan Chi had something of a fight scene? Again, even on a second watch where I can pause it at home, it's that fast.
.
7. Cole Young's death had build up to it until it happened. Then Shao Kahn dragged his headless body into the dead pool. Perhaps this arena should have been saved for another fight where a live person could have been thrown into the deadpool and we could have even been given an easter egg where they come back up as a skeleton.
.
8. I loved the use of a corpse during Sonya vs Sindel's fight scene. Did you catch that? Again it's that fast.
.
9. Gore vs bore. Some of the gore looks fake - anytime the body is sliced, the veins/internal organs are just too bright. Especially the case in the theater. Plus there's a weird obsession with getting some of the effects in this film right. When you see Kano's corpse, it really looks like a real corpse in reality. Even the first look at Quan Chi is downright scary. Then all of a sudden dead Kano and Quan Chi no longer look scary; Quan Chi looks like he belongs at an Insane Clown Posse concert while Kano avoids the revenant treatment, which leads me to this...
.
10. What's the point the keeping some of the rules when you're challenging fan's notions of the established rules? Outworld must win 10 victories. That happened with the fall of Edenia. In this film, Outworld must win. Each side is given 5 "flames" that float in the sky. Suddenly Outworld must defend their championship? And even though you technically didn't have to kill your opponent to get a victory in the original video games, why has that been carried over into this film? Kitana letting Johnny Cage wobble before he falls, while is a great geekdom moment, looks weird in film. When did Sonya actually lose except during the final fight? Oh wait, that doesn't seem to matter. Somehow the tournament eventually forgets its a tournament near the end and Outworld wins... until it doesn't. So what's the point of having rules if anyone who dies can just readily be brought back - either as a revenant or, in Kano's case, just as his old self (a throwback to all of the fighters who returned in 1990s' MKII and MK3 despite supposedly dying).
.
Also I've been watching a lot of influencer's videos and keep in mind when you "state your opinion" yet it's something I already covered, a little credit goes a long way. This new breed of Youtubers don't want to give credit where credit is due (like the analysis of the MK workprint; reviews of the MKII movie that mentions where it blends MK11/MK1, etc). Plus this site serves as an official dated record so there's that ;)
