Man, do I love spoilers!
So with a few lucky people getting their hands on the game early, the game's story has been revealed. While it is possible at this point there could be more secret endings that haven't been found yet, from what I have seen so far, there appears to be one definitive ending to this story, and I have seen some mixed reactions about it. So obviously spoilers here:
After determining that Kronika's plan is reliant on Liu Kang and Raiden being against one another, Raiden decides to merge his own essence with Liu Kang, which frees him from his corruption and gives him godlike powers. Liu Kang uses his and Raiden's combined power to destroy Kronika, but not before Kronika takes him quite some time in the past. Liu Kang is advised by a now mortal Raiden to retrieve Kitana and for the two of them to oversee the creation of a new timeline. The story ends with Liu Kang and Kitana arriving at the dawn of time to see the new timeline begin
Now I personally think that this ending is badass, serving as both great closure and allowing endless possibilities for the writers to take the next game.
I have seen some people with quite contrary reactions; they see this as every other character being erased from existence, leaving only Liu and Kitana left. Some theorize that the other characters will never come to exist now, or will be so vastly different that we will no longer be familiar with them.
As a counter-argument to that, I'll say while that could theoretically happen (maybe Liu and Kitana accidentally butterfly effect something). do you really think that NRS will actually get rid of their famous characters? I highly, highly doubt there's any reason for concern with that happening.
What I do think will happen is we'll see a future game with a slightly altered history that puts Liu Kang in Raiden's place for a good amount of time. We may see a different character serving as the Mortal Kombat Champion, such as Kung Lao. For the most part every returning character (which there will likely be plenty of) will be spiritually intact; Johnny Cage will still feel like Johnny Cage, Cassie will still feel like Cassie, Scorpion will still feel like Scorpion, and so on. I do think most returning characters will keep large portions of their character arcs intact, and we can probably see some carrying over from the events of MK11 despite the timeline being different. We might get a few changes, but in my opinion those changes are probably things the writers wanted to change anyway, and the new timeline can just be an excuse to do that (at least now they'll have an excuse).
I'll leave it with this: I'm hyped to play this story mode and soak in all the details in person, I think the ending is very good; I understand that a lot of people might have concerns about the ending, but I think the story will continue moving in a good direction in the future. I'll leave the thread to you all who saw the ending to discuss what you thought of it and where you'd like to see it go from here.
Well, if there's one thing i can say about the Netherrealm era so far, you have NO idea where they're gonna take the story next. I will say though
Boy am I glad Liu and Kitana seem to finally get a happy ending of sorts

hey
Totally dude, I was so happy to see that. It also finally sets up Liu Kang as Earth's new protector. That is something that was implied in quite a few games; it's nice to finally see that realized. I really am happy to see the game end on such a high note for this character. Although Liu is my main, I would even be happy if this is his happily ever after and he doesn't participate in the next game.
I still think Kitana definitely has more fight in her though.
I have no idea where they'll go from here. Any time I try to predict the logical progression of the story and characters, NRS pulls a total U turn on me and does something that is the complete opposite of what makes sense so fuck it. I'm through trying to foresee their next move.
I'm actually kind of through with the story period. I say that, but y'all know I'll still chime in about it.
Don't know what to think of the story overall. Like you, Ill have to play it to get the explicit details, then Ill have to gather the whole thing...IN ADDITION to whatever happens in Avengers:Endgame just 3 days from MK11...good god!
Definitely has badass moments in it from what Ive seen and read, and like you guys up there, I too was VERY glad to see Kitana and Liu get some kinda happy ending, as gods(I guess, right?)
"What's Next" indeed....
Wait, didn’t Kitana become queen of Outworld? Did she just abandon that responsibility to hang out with Liu Kang in outer space for eternity?

You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else.

So has there been any word on the Mercy finisher? I have seen the Screen shot of it being done just no word on if it's the same as in previous MK
Way too bitter and angry to make an intelligent and thoughtful write up about the ending. Will post after some more thought.

I feel the same way, and I had been starting to get upset about it. But after this game they can't really make a U-turn because any direction they can go can be justified. It actually has me excited, and thinking about so many possibilities. Although the likelihood of any one particular idea actually happening is pretty much one in a million.

At the end of the story, they go back to the dawn of time; Outworld probably hasn't been formed, and her friends family and followers not even born at the time.
I theorize that the timeline will go on mostly unaltared as far as who ends up coming into existence; I wonder if Kitana will descend back down when they reach the present again.

That's what you think but trust me NRS will find a way. They always manage to find a way to go in the most illogical direction. Who would have thought a 20 year time jump would have been the way they were going to go just after they had rebooted the franchise, rather than do a more fleshed out Shinnok saga.
I mean just look at what they did with Dark Raiden here. From what I understand he gets swept aside pretty fast. So much for that story arch. One would have thought Earthrealm dealing with a Tyrannical Raiden would have been the next chapter of MK. but apparently NRS just couldn't wait to wet their toes in time travel again.
@KenshiMaster16 Eheheheheheh...Good, good! Let the hate fllllooooowww through you!

So what happens to the revenants?

So what happens to the revenants?
Essentially everyone bar Liu and Kitana are gone. Raiden says he hopes to cross paths with Liu and Kitana at some point but who knows if the characters we know and love will ever come to be again? I’m very conflicted by the ending, loved story mode but was not expecting that.

Just have to say I LOVED what NrS did with the Cage family in this story. Not just as a Sonya fan but they are very well written and had a great dynamic.

So what did they do to Noob Saibot? How disgracefully did they off him?

hey
I dont think Noob Saibot died, but he only popped up once in story mode and didnt have much to do with it. Since Liu and Kitana returned to the beginning of time, it could be that they make it so Noob remains as Sub-Zero this time though.
So with that ending everyone could be back for MK 12 with the possible exception of the Kombat kids bc they probably won’t be born yet when the new timeline begins, Noob Saibot who would be back as Sub Zero if he doesn’t get killed again and Mileena who won’t be created if Kitana stays at Liu Kangs side

But there would still have to be a past Kitana who would still be adopted by Shao Kahn and later cloned by Shan Tsung. I don't know who knows how they are going to botch up this new time line crap. I don't see why if they are just going to go full reboot again, anything would change in regards to Noob Saibot, Scorpion. But who knows, I sure don't care enough to give it much thought.
Story mode has multiple endings though in this game doesn't it? So.some are canon and some aren't just like the arcade endings. So now they have freedom to do whatever. I thought they would reboot all the way till Armageddon than start a new story after but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Guess onaga wont be back next installment and we can look forward to a new boss etc..nobody has mentioned how kronika plays as a boss yet.

Keep In Mind that People like a Noob Saibot type of Character in the Sense of a capable Ninja with shadow themed abilities. Also If Bi Han is Sub Zero, Kuai Lang needs to have a different feel from his brother. So even if there are two Sub Zeroes, They need a different fighting style to make them then customize their abilities to make their unique fighting style more unique
Does anyone else find it a little odd that they basically did a Armageddon game again, and they didn't include everyone? They left major legacy characters out when they absolutely should have been involved in such an event that puts their very existence in danger.
That is a very excellent point

Can you tell me more about sonya ? Like her arcade ending and if she does have a chapter in story mode ?
Young Sonya gets chapter 8
