2D fighting games are all the rage now but does anyone think we will ever see a new cycle where 3D comes back into fashion ?

Personally I love MK as both 2D and 3D, but the animations really stood out in the 3D games. Certain normal moves just seemed to have a real impact and the focus on fighting styles made it feel more like a martial arts combat game where as the 2D games tend to be more about the mechanics of combos strings. It’s hard to describe but for me Deception while mechanically not nearly as good as the 2D games, had a presentation about it where sometimes you felt like you were controlling a Kung fu movie.

Don’t get me wrong, going back to the 3D games as they were mechanically would be a major step backward, I just still think it would be cool to see a more grounded 3D approach to an MK game someday.

Sadly I have to disagree. Though I did (unlike most) love the 3D era games, Deception being my absolute favorite.... MK fighting belongs on the 2D plane. I just works better that way. I love MKX's gameplay. Don't want that to change.

My thoughts exactly.

It would work a la MK4, just a limited sidestep function that works as a counter.

As an alternative improve and increase camera angles during throws and special moves. MK X was a good step into the right direction, compared to the poor job made by MK9.

ps: MK9 is great!

They could go a different route, not this sidestep 3D of the mk5-8 era but more of a cinematic RPG type of deal where you move freely, but somehow fixed so the camera doesn't turn like crazy. Basically what you see in the MKX intro with Sub-Zero and Scorpion, I was thrilled it would get away from the plain 2D style and not the rubbish simplified 3D fighting style.

Absolutely not. Mortal Kombat started out as a 2d figher. When it transitioned to 3D, it did so clumsily. It never got anywhere near as good or well-honed as games that have always been 3D from their conception, such as Tekken.

Now, Tekken bores the shit out of me, as do most fighting games. MK is the only one I am fiercely loyal to. MK's return to 2D brought the series back to its roots, and as we can see from the fact that Mortal Kombat's all-time popularity is probably at its apex, when in the 3D years it was considered the perennial laughing stock of the fighting game genre, MK is meant to be 2D. Some games just work better in that regard.

I really enjoyed a lot about MK:DA, my favorite 3D era game. But to me, there feels like a bit of give and take between 2D and 3D. On one hand, I love how much more immersive the backgrounds feel in 3D. I also liked how the combos felt and how the characters looked doing them. Moves felt more deliberate and "human," I guess, but maybe that's just me.

However, some aspects of MK just didn't really feel like they lent themselves to 3D gameplay, namely the special moves. It always seemed kinda silly to me that Scorpion's spear could just be side-stepped as it flies harmlessly off in to the distance. I look at how special moves appear in MK9 and MKX and they just look right. They look dangerous, like you can't just side step them in this massive 3D area. Since you're on a straight line, there's so much more you can do with moves and so much more players actually have to deal with.

It all kinda leads me to believe that games with special moves, speed, projectiles, etc are more suited to a 2D plane, while games with a more deliberate animations, body movements, and moves that cling more literally to human physical abilities (or somewhere close to it) are better suited to the 3D space.

Now I say that and I know DOA has crazy stuff going on like giant corkscrew backdrops and Soul Calibur has a lot more crazy stuff going on with super moves and other stuff, but the majority; the meat of the gameplay is grounded realistic human movement, while 2D gameplay, especially the special moves, aren't quite as beholden to that.

Maybe I'm not explaining this well, but for me... Mortal Kombat fighting functions best on a 2D plane. That's not to say a spin off of MK couldn't work in 3D provided it was more grounded in that style, as opposed to shoe-horning 2D gameplay in to a 3D space. Like maybe they go back to the Great Kung Lao's time, and let's say magic and special powers and what not aren't nearly what they are in the present day. I'd play that. Though I'd still prefer a new 2D game that continues the story.

I don't care. i doubt they will seeing how those games are now looked at as more of a smear on their record than achievements, and for good reason; and 2D is far safer for the NRS team and seeing how 3D fighters are now a little pocket niche and no longer mainstream i doubt they will abandon their safe cozy camp of 2D.
But if they did go back to 3D...meh.
