Nah. It worked well in Street Fighter 4. I've no doubt that it'll work as well in Mortal Kombat.

This is barely even 2.5D.

Yes, I am not particularly fond of the idea, but if they can make a better functioning MK in two dimensions, that is the better choice. Also, there are far too many things I dislike in the new MK that being 2.5D is the least of those.

I've never been a big fan of the sidestepping or easy ring-outs whether in the 3D MKs or other games like Tekken and Soul Calibur either. I especially don't like how you can't really jump in any useful way in Tekken and SC.
I'm glad to see them following the Street Fighter 4 model.

My dream MK would be fully 3D, but the previous "3D" games didn't really use it that well. Just being able to sidestep to avoid projectiles and move around the arena is a bit lame. Losing the complication should hopefully make for a more sorted game.

Once they've got the 2D gameplay down and popped out a few sequels, maybe they can took to 3D again and do it well. I mean with moves that move you around the floor rather than back and forth. Moves that can't be sidestepped and moves that can, the ability to dive and roll, or cartwheel from side to side. There's loads that can be done with 3D, but just to have it for the sake of it isn't great. I think to make a fully 3D game work well is a lot more difficult than to do it for 2D.

I think the game looks pretty great, and am glad the team isn't overfacing themselves. They seem to be keeping it relatively simple and taking their time, which means it should be good.

3D MK sucks balls and was a giant step backwards for the franchise. So glad they got their senses back and are going 2D again. Hope it stays 2D from here on out. Looking everywhere online everyone else is excited too so you 3D guys are the minority.

I don't really see how sticking with the same enigine and just taking out side stepping is kinda lame if ya ask me but I dunno what all changes will be made when the final product is done. If it stays pretty much as it currently is though then overall I don't see a huge difference and the game will still suck for competitive play.

Something tells me that this game will be optimized for 3D TVs...You'll need the TV and the glasses to experience the full effect of the game...\\furious

I think that's the best idea they've had in a while. Whether it's thanks to the success of SF4 or because it was always their intention, i don't really care.

3D in the previous games never really added anything to the gameplay, as others have noted it very few moves made use of it so it was virtually played in a single plane anyways.

At this stage it's pretty much agreed that UMK3 has the most robust gameplay compared to the other games.

If they work based off that and tweak & revise it, as no doubt has been posted considerably on these and similar forums, then I think they could be onto something.

No.

I'm happy with 3D and 2.5D

2D would have made me quit this series.

But since it's 2.5D, I guess we can throw away our dreams of destructable props in the arena...

I'm not very savvy in most gameplay lingo, are we pretty much stating that the new MK is full-on 2D with no sidestepping? It sure seems that way given the stages shown and the quick shots of gameplay. If this is the case, I'm kinda bummed, even though I am in the minority. Full-on 2D feels very confining to me in today's time, having played a lot of Tekken and SC, etc. I know I bought SF4 and just couldn't get the hang of it no matter how much I tried.

Still, Sonya's in the game, and Boon's story-related promises have been... promising o_o ... so regardless, mah arse will buy it day one.

P.S.: assasSINister, your sig is quite orgasmic. I love that shot.

I think the thing that bothers me mainly is the fact that there aren't going to be any more stage fatalities and things. I mean.. sure they were cheap.. but they sure were cool. Maybe people would be a bit less against them if they were harder to get to.

Also I liked the freefall kombat. I think that with some work, it could be an awesome feature. Like if they added some new animations and it wasn't so stiff. And maybe if there were different ones for different stages.. It could make things very epic. And that running through building things was cool. It all just needed work.

and then that multi tiered level thing was something I've always been a fan of. with 2.5 D you can't really do any of these things (unless the person gets knocked off one of the edges of the arena.. which would be pretty lame). I was hoping this would be something they expanded on.

Where I come from, doing a stage fatality mid-round does not exist. Finishers should be earned.
