Hello, new to the forums. I've been playing MK since version one in the arcades. Anyway, like most 360 owners I am bummed about no demo, but I was fortunate enough to play it this weekend so here's some brief impressions about it:
It played very smooth.
The move back to 2d was a nice edition since you could focus on combos rather than sidestepping to block projectiles all the time.
The graphics look nice, especially the stages (demo only had 2 stages, living forest and the pit)
I like what they did with the fighting engine. It feels a lot like MK 2 and 3 but smoother, yet with all the same moves. One thing I liked is that you could jump over an opponent and then do a reverse jump kick really quickly. You could do that in 2 and 3 but not the 3d versions so I'm glad they brought that back. The combos are simple but not too simple. You can't button mash and expect more than a 2 or 3 hit combo but when you do pull off a nice 6 move combo its very rewarding.
The X-ray feature is pretty nice and not too gimmicky. From what I played, which was only an hour, it seems the same meter which charges your x-ray moves also powers combo breakers and extra special moves. I'm not sure how to describe the extra special moves except they seem to be a stronger version of a special move, with an extra button pressed at the end which makes it more powerful, but also pulls from that power meter.
The only downside for me is there is no run like in MK3. I know a lot of people hated the run feature in MK3 so it won't matter to most but I happened to like charging at people with the run. Instead you get a quick dash which is better than nothing.
From my time playing it, the only really annoying thing to me was how the move list would flip depending on what side of your opponent you are on. For example if your on the left side of someone and a special move is left down back A, when you are on the opposite side and look at the move list it would read right, down back A. I'd rather just memorize them in terms of what they are and not in terms of what direction i'm facing. Not a dealbreaker, just means I'll have to make my own move list sheet.
I am also bummed that there will be no team vs mode cause that was tons of fun in MK2 and 3 on the SNES
Most of you already know these things and there have already been impressions but I wanted to give my perspective on it.
I look forward to playing this online on the 360 when it comes out.
My game tag on xbox live is Darth Cervantes.
Also, I know the D-pad for the 360 isn't that great, but I found a controller which has a very nice D-pad although it is wired. It's called the hori pad ex turbo. It can't be bought in stores but I'm sure you can find them brand new on ebay, thats where I got one of mine from. Here is a pic of it
