This is relevant to MK2011 I promise.
Anyways last night on the Daily Show Jon Stewart was taking about how the supreme court ruled that children are allowed to purchase violent video games, and to show how inappropriate it is for children to play these games he showed Noob Saibot's x-ray and fatality to which the audience was grossed out at. And then he said something about how no children showed be allowed to play games like Mortal Kombat.
Well let me first say that I started playing Mortal Kombat at the age of three, I wasn't very good but I played it, a lot. And I found all the fatalities to be funny rather than gross. Now let me first say I am by no means a violent person. Ghandi is my personal hero, I refuse to even kill bugs that crawl into my house, and even the sight of real blood makes me sick. So obviously Mortal Kombat didn't corrupt me.
I think many people should know that children can tell the difference between video game violence and actual violence. Now there are games out there like Manhunt that is basically a murder simulator that I don't think children should be allowed to play, but a lot of games, like Mortal Kombat, have such over the top violence that I don't really take it seriously. But in the end I think it is the parents responsibility to monitor what the children play and determine what is appropriate. But what do you guys think on the matter? Feel free to post your thoughts below.

I agree with this 100% since I also played it when I was 3

I can understandwhere Jon is coming from. He's a parent. He thinks it would be best for his child(ren) NOT to play a game like MK. The issue, though, is that that should be HIS responsibility, not the responsibility of the state. It isn't illegal to sell tickets to a violent movie to a child, but it is frowned upon. The MPAA regulates the cinema and is allowed to do so without government meddling. The ESRB should be able to do the same thing. Parents have a right, and a responsibility, to limit or regulate what their children play.
Also, MK back when we were kids wasn't nearly as graphic as it is now.

For me to say that kids should not be allowed to play violent games, I would be a hypocrite being that I played Mortal Kombat at such a young age. But yeah, they shouldn't. And at the same time, we are living in a generation where people are just fucking stupid now.
We can always play the blame game that it's the parents fault, but it's not always true. Parents can try so hard, but they can't be there all the time for them.
Kids will go to school, they will interact with other kids, they will go to their house and they will most likely discovered things they shouldn't experience at a young age. It's practically inevitable.
And just like the person above me said. This Mortal Kombat game is graphic as fuck than ever. Because of the X-Ray attacks, this game can actually teach a person how to kill (or extremely harm) someone and what effect it would have. The fact that the characters still fight after that can easily mindfuck a kid into thinking "They will be okay afterwards".

ok now that i got that off my chest..
I don't see myself as a hypocrite cause i played this when i was a kid but MAN it was so cheap (graphics wise)! nowadays the graphics are awesome, so real.
I wouldn't be comfortable with my kids playing MK9, MK1-4 yes (i can't deprive them completely of MK lol)

I agree with you completely. Its the parents responsibility, and most stores are doing a good job of making sure under age people can't buy M rated games.

Ridiculous. Anyone who thinks children should be forbidden from playing these games is a complete twat. Why? Because these should be used as an educational learning tool for reality instead of becoming one of those "No! You can't do it" type of things where the child will eventually find a way TO do it.
If you suffocate and remove a child from something, they will seek it out. This will eventually lead to other problems in life. So check your OWN skills before you start playing the state.
My little niece plays MK with me sometimes. She loves it but we (that's her parents AND myself) have told her that this is just a game and you can't do that in real life without either dying or getting into serious trouble. I mean for fucks sake, one look at an X-Ray where they're still alive AFTER having their neck snapped or their liver frozen off is enough to let a child know "ok, that was not real".
It's called education through communication. You should try it sometime.

I started playing MK in the 3rd of 4th grade.
I have a violent imagination, yes... but do I do anything violet in real life? No.
Some kids just can't handle violence because they're fucked up in the head. It's up to the parent who should be mature and responsible enough to decide if their kids can handle violent video games.
Since parents these days don't step up and are LAZY... we have morons on TV blaming video game creators who have the freedom of expression.
Violence was around since the ancient times. We had gladiators ripping each others limbs apart. And that was considered civilized entertainment.
Violence is nothing, and I mean NOTHING new in society.
I think teen pregnancy and STDs is more of a fucking issue than video games.

It really amounts to education. Not solely by the school but by the parent AND the bystander (relative, family friend, or just someone who is taking care of the child).

Played it since I was three. No problems here. Been a part of life since.
Parents know their children better than most. I would leave it up to them.
speaking on both sides of the fence here. Its not healthy to shelter the human mind. A sometimes brutally clear view of reality and death (even in fantasy) should not be sheltered from the public eye and the young children of today.
I, growing up with violence. am one of the most humane people there are. I would never inflict pain or suffering by free will alone.
It comes down to the mind. But there needs to be a bit taken from each side here. You don't want social hermits who have mental breakdown when they see a fight for the first time at 18 years old, but you also don't want to mold killers(which I don't think would be from that anyways, again. the mind in question is key).
I know the kind of people who have been sheltered their whole life and kept from violence or at least the understanding that it exists, lets just say they are worse off than a serial killer for mental stability and view of the world.

Most of you should do more listening and less talking. The issue isn't about kids playing violent games. Its about kids buying them. The problem is many stores (gamestop) sell and market mature games to kids.
It should be up to the parents, and therefore it should be the parents who buy the games. I don't think this retarded double-standarded bill is the answer, but there should be a penalty or at least a regulation. Even if that answer is cane shitty parents.

Not only that, but he's completely making fun of the the double standard between violence and sex. Or did you all miss when he mentioned that if Sonya had a nip slip, regulate away! He didn't attack the media at all, instead he was questioning why sex is regulated, and violence is protected.
Hell, he even specifically stated that he doesn't know if video games affect a childs mind, nor did he side with either side of the debate. Instead everyone sees video games on TV and jumps the fence on it.
It felt like he was more eagerly exposing the hypocrisy that you can rip a woman in half and we (and the Justices) are okay with that, but that a nipple sends people into shock and comas?
... You really should have shown that scene using Mileena's "Flesh Pit" costume then.

I was brought up on the original MK for SNES, which had no blood, so it wasn't the blood that made me fall in love with the series.
It wasn't until MK2 came out for the SNES that I realized how fucked up and gory it was. Blew my mind.

Because I'm using an old computer I' mot able to stream every video or link I want. So, in case this is different from the link that was shared above, please check out this (semi low-quality) recording of the show in youtube:
The Daily Show: MoRal Kombat. Featuring: Sonya Blade and Noob Saibot! (youtube link)
Whether we agree or disagree, I found it a lot of fun and interesting to watch. Some of that stuff was simply hilarious.
And I do agree with the majority regarding this whole debate. I don't really feel video games are to blame. More importantly, people should know that this guy is trying to make another point across to his audience: The topic is mostly about the craziness of this culture being so shocked by nudity and not so much by such graphic (unrealistic) gore.
Pfff!
Sonya Blade was clearly the major star of the show. She stole every scene!

If a kid can't understand the difference between fiction and reality, then yes, he shouldn't be playing MK. I probably wouldn't let my child near an MK game until at least 8 or 9 years old (I started playing at 8).
By the way, just because you played MK as a kid doesn't make you hypocrite for not wanting children playing MK2011. The difference between MK1 Genesis and MK2011 is laughably huge.
And FYI, being a hypocrite, by itself, doesn't make you wrong. If Ted Bundy said it was wrong to kill people, would the fact that he's a serial killer make his point false?
