I have not seen a thread where you could discuss the outfits of the MK characters. I know right now maybe graphics, storyline, the fighting engine, etc. are more of people's minds, but some people like to discuss attire.

So feel free to talk about what you have seen so far that you approve of, what you disapprove of, and maybe what you are hoping to see.

so far:

Mileena - love it! i just wish they kept the sleeves and the whole arabian theme she had in deception...seems she is losing more clothes in every game :P

Sektor - badass!!! i never really liked the cyborgs but this looks superb!

Reptile - they finally got it with him! it was nice to set him appart from the rest of the palete swap ninjas in MKDA but no need to make him look like a damn lizard! his new look is just awesome!

Scorpion - looks very good as well. i never really notice the changes on him but he always looks cool to me ;)

Sub Zero - its a let down from his MKD look which i loved but this is still nice

Kung Lao - whats the diff? he looks good too though...

Nightwolf - meeh not a fan of his look generally. i only liked his alt in MKD

Cage - horrible :S

from those who havent been announced yet i would like:

Ermac - just a few changes from his MKD look. he doesnt need anything drastic imo

Sindel - make her look eviiiillll! a darker, goth look would be great! also do sth for her freagin hair! i want those moves back! make them move around during battle...edenian medusa ftw!

Raiden - bring his old look back! just a few changes but no dark raiden plz

Ashrah - i really want ashrah back so i will post my opinion on her too. make her blond! we just have one blond female in the game (and tbh her gender seems questionable in the last few games) ashrah looks so unique in mk! dont get rid of her...just update her looks a bit

Rain - i love rain and i really hope he returns with an updated version of his MKA look! i like the whole persian prince thingy...

Shang Tsung - he is a bad guy but he always looks so damn cartoonish to me...give him a darker look! darker clothes, long black hair that cover part of his face...dunno just a more mysterious look!

Reptile: I'm still a little iffy on this, but if it stays like this when the game comes out, I'll be fine with it.

Sektor: 100% Love it

Sub-Zero: Sure, the mask is the same, but I like it. Wish he had the scar though, but he still may get it as the story goes on.

Scorpion: Nearly died in it's glory

Johnny Cage: The tattoo's a tad distracting, but I like it all around.

Kung Lao: The hair is a bit weird to me, but I like the costume overall

Nightwolf: It works for him

Mileena:........What? Sorry, I was distracted. Didn't see the cat-eyes coming, but they add to her attitude.

Reptile: When I see him for some reason I keep thinking of a bird.

More specifically, he actually reminds me of an old Power Ranger villain.

I don't mind the costumes I think they look great, but I do agree on the Johnny Cage tatoo bein' a bit much. The dragon was kool, but havin' your own name tatoo'd on your chest is a bit much even if you're full of yourself. I get it says Johnny then Cage on his belt but, c'mon..
I think the design team's done a great job, though, as far as I'm concerned and I DO look forward to playin' online tournaments with everyone on here finally like they've done for the other ones. I've never had the chance to for the previous ones, this one I'm already lookin' forward to that glasses

Scorpion: I've already said numerous times I'm not a fan of the bug look. Like Mick, I'd prefer him to more reflect the fact that he's a legit Japanese ninja, and to represent his Netherealm evolution as skull decorations and maybe some leather, belts, spikes, that sort of thing, like he already has in past games. I do think the "looking more like an actual scorpion" thing has a place, I just think it would work better in smaller doses, it wasn't that bad in MK vs DCU, but these complicated black plates all over his chest and thighs don't really form any logical shape or design, they're just stupid lookin'. I'm still not sure how I feel about the swords. The stinger-shaped handles are pretty cool, but I'd really rather Scorpion stick to his spear when he needs a weapon.

Sub-Zero: Almost perfect. The little Lin Kuei logo medallions on his chest are an excellent touch. All he's missing is the scar but if this is the older brother or he hasn't got it yet, that's fine...just as long as we get to play as the younger brother too and he DOES get the scar, perhaps as an alt costume. That's the Sub-Zero I'm a fan of.

Reptile: I don't like the chest plate or the fact that his hood isn't part of a shirt, it's just all by itself on his body. That looks dumb. Something more Shaolin Monks-y was what I was hoping for. Oh well, guess that's what alts are for. Other than that though, it's a solid Reptile design.

Cage: I don't care what anybody says, that tattoo is PERFECT for Johnny. It fits his personality so well. The big gold plated belt is perfect too. Other than that, it's his MK2-4 pants and that's appropriate for the plot.

Kung Lao: I already thought the way Shaolin Monks updated his MK2 costume was perfect, but they made it even better. I love that the loopy things at his hips are back and I believe those are the shinguards he wears in Deadly Alliance.

Mileena: I need to see Kitana and Jade to determine how I feel for sure. Since the setting is during the early games, I really think Kahn's assassin girls should be more "uniform" in their dress, but at the same time, it is a Mileena character trait to show as much skin as possible, so right now I'm thinking this is a pretty good, appropriate look for her.

Nightwolf: I don't like that he's missing the red and white wolf design on the back of his vest, but other than that, it's perfect. It definitely looks like MK3 biker-style Nightwolf, which is how he should be. The MKD costume pushed the "stereotypicial indian" thing too far.

Sektor: I think the "face" of his helmet looks weird. Other than that, it looks pretty good. It definitely looks like a Sektor design.

Raiden: What little we saw of him looked like his MK2 costume. I'm perfectly fine with that.

Shao Kahn: In the FMV scene, his helmet appeared to be redesigned. The back of the skull mask was some sort of leather instead of more skull, and the horns were shaped differently. Not sure if I like that or not. Also, his belt/crotch armor looked like it was just cloth tied around his waist. Kinda weak. Guess I'll have to wait for them to release the final design to be sure.

---

What I'm hoping for from future reveals:

Smoke: Gotta be a cyborg. Let the fans of the human look have their cake too with an alt costume, but I wanna see the cyborg look presented as the primary because it's much cooler.

Kitana: Stay the fuck away from her MK vs DCU outfit. The black shapes and patterns on that thing weren't arranged in any way that made sense, she just looked stupid. And her face was fat and her ponytail looked fake as hell. For the clothes, the Shaolin Monks design was awesome, use that. And for the face, stick to that vaguely ethnic Talisa Soto look she's had in Gold and the Deadly Alliance generation.

Shang Tsung: The old man version sitting on the throne looked like he was wearing some new red robe. Not sure I like the way it looked. I'd much prefer that the color at least stuck to MK1 Blue.

Sonya: No manjaw this time, for the love of god.

Liu Kang: Bring back the championship belt! lol, anything to spice the poor guy up.

Scorpion: Seems like a nice enough continuation of the stuff they were experimenting with in MKvsDC. I usually err on the side of wanting to see Scorpion -- the only MK character who actually is a ninja -- look more like what we know of Japanese ninja, but it's fair that he would reflect his Netherealm transformation in design. I don't like the sculpted plastic looking piece on his chest, but otherwise, some of the scorpion flourishes are kinda nice... if a little corny.

Mileena: Mileena's come a long way since being a clone of Kitana, so ordinarily I'd like to see something more personalized. I wasn't a fan of the weirdly round facemask Kitana had in MKvsDC, which Mileena now has. Timewise, I guess it makes sense that she'd look more like Kitana, so that's forgiveable. The scantily clad aspects of the design are a small blessing in terms of individuality, and communicate some of the subtext of her character well, so that's nice. Not a great design, but justifiable.

Reptile: Shaolin Monks' attempts to justify the ninja palette swap didn't sit well with me. MKDA was good for individuality if you're willing to accept a radical (story-driven) departure from early designs. My favourite is still MK4, where he had a really cool reptillian-humanoid design, with a somewhat bland but unintrusive outfit. The return of the ninja swap is sad and made more ridiculous by the evolved fixation with plasticy cybernetic sculpted face masks. His head looks tiny, but that's not such a big deal. If he lost the cowl and mask, it'd be a move in the right direction. Muted greens is kinda cool, but characters dressing alike is always disappointing.

Sub-Zero: Preferred the MKDA/MKD Sub-Zero designs, and the Lin Kuei embellishments seen in Armageddon. This looks too much like the ninja palette swaps for my tastes, but it could be worse. There's already a big thread about Sub-Zero.

Kung Lao: Seems like some of the embellishments are gone, but Kung Lao is a character who isn't suffering from arbitrary redesigns. They've got something that works and, pleasantly enough, they're sticking with it. I'm not fond of so many characters shopping for shoulder pads and/or loincloths, but it's not a bad idea to break up what was a pretty bland pants/t-shirt combo.

Johnny Cage: Not feeling the Johnny tattooed on his chest, regardless of explanation. It just looks like a goofy and lazy way to add something to a bare chest. The CAGE belt buckle is a more easily accepted bit of arrogance (and branding) for the character. Not wild about the generic sports pant look, but I don't have any brilliant suggestions for an actor like this entering a mythological martial arts tournament. I might've looked to something Van Damme inspired, maybe going back to the Bloodsport look of the earlier games, or something like it. I hope the sunglasses ($500?) are destructable.

Nightwolf: Pretty bland. I get the sense that a lot of these characters were probably planned DLC for MKvsDC. There's a heavy nostalgic tone to a lot of the characters that you would've expected for that game. I don't think Nightwolf was one of them and that might be why he seems oddly familiar, but much more plausible and subdued in the way it goes back. It helps that Nightwolf always had the benefit of being a simple, archetypal (stereotypical?) character with his own look. It's a bit bland, but I'll take it over arbitrary looks. Shame we're going backward, because I was kinda digging the mohawk/sin eater stuff.

Sektor: Another victim of the homogeny of nostalgia. After the Tekunin upgrade he got a much stronger sense of individuality as a character, but the design stayed tame. I want Sektor to look the most Japanese of the Cyber LK characters. They're machined characters, so it stands to reason MK3-era Cyber LK are going to look the same, but without establishing rank, you'd think the colours would be the same, too. Fair enough, if a bit bulky looking for my tastes. American machines, versus Japanese, eh?

Raiden: He never looked better, more godly, or more individual than in MKDA. keep the (new) hat on his head and his outfit on his shoulders, but I don't need to see him borrowing clothes from mortals. Shoulderpads and loincloths, it's redundant. This is a prime example of nostalgic pandering that borrows from a time when technology was limited. Disappointing!

Shao Kahn: The original tack-on shoulder pad master and the man who deserves it most. Classic design that hasn't been tampered with too much. Lots of fun to see it back. Shame everyone else has infringed on his design sense so much in the last few years.

I'm of the opinion that Deadly Alliance was the strongest step forward for MK in most respects, but particularly in terms of designing the characters. That comes down to a sense of character in their fighting, a better sense of movement in the storylines, but also particularly individualized designs. MKD had it's moments, MKA gave us good and bad new stuff, but for the most part, MKDA was the strongest point moving forward.

Generally, I'm not all that fond of the cross-eyed nostalgia that seems to constantly drag MK down. I don't understand why anyone would expect the characters to change wardrobe every few years (or days/weeks depending on the story), so I don't need arbitrary change every game. If we really had to literally get bogged back down in the past, I would've liked to have seen this opportunity used to canonize the logical sense of individuality the characters always should've had. Something they didn't do with MKSM.

I don't understand why anyone would want designs and so forth to be defined by the limitations of technology in the early nineties. I think that's misplaced nostalgia and part of the reason MK has been a cellar dweller in the respect departments.

Hmm, let's see...

Scorpion: I like the fact that he appears somewhat like his MKvsDCU appearance, but simpler and with a more scorpion-theme going on there with the shoulders and the cloth hanging from his belt. However, the chest- and thigh design just looks odd to me and completely unnecessary. Also, the black flames on his yellow 'gi' (what's the right term for such?) also look odd to me.

Mileena: I liked her alternate outfit of MKD/MKA, because though it was just a purple mankini (Borat) with thigh high boots, it fits her character as the overly sexy assassin bitch sister of Kitana. Having it return in a new fashion is just fantastic. The whole 'arabian princess' theme she had going on for her fits her at the timeline of MKD/MKA, but not back in MK2/UMK3. I like this outfit, and I love that they also gave her the eye-covering hairstyle.

Reptile: I must admit, I loved the reptilian-humanoid form Reptile had back in MK4 rather than the changes they did to him in MKDA/MKA where he looked more like a weird lizardman. This new form of Reptile reminds me a bit of the Reptile in the MK Movie, and I think it fits him just perfectly. I also like that his outfit is less like the typical MK ninja attire and more unique this time around.

Sub-Zero: With the lack of the eyescar, there has been much debate if this is the older or younger brother, and the outfit stays true to his classic look. The mask being that of MKDA/MKD/MKA is actually one of the things I like most of the entire outfit. Having Subbie breathe through the mask with his cold breath was a very nice detail and I am glad they kept it for this game (or at least the possibility of it). Back in the classic MK days, the outfits were simpler, and Subbie stays true to that, though a bit more details would be nice to see.

Kung Lao: It appears that Kung Lao has kept his MKSM outfit for this game which I find rather dull. I liked his MKDA/MKD/MKA outfit much better, because it gave him some nice details to his outfit instead of looking like a plain kung fu fighter, because he is -not- a plain kung fu fighter at all! However, I am glad they didn't use the MK3/MKG attire, so that's a plus at least.

Johnny Cage: Ahh, dear Johnny... you looks like yourself. Sporting his first name as a tattoo across his chest and his surname in his belt just shows how big a narcissistic asshole he really is. It is rather disappointing though that there aren't any bigger changes on his attire -at all-! He just looks like the same Johnny as he does in every game. They did a few cool things in MKDA/MKD/MKA with the blue wrappings around his arms and the big belt, but the wrappings he has in this game are just plain white which is, in my opinion, just plain boring. And it's a shame, really...

Nightwolf: NO! No no no no no! He looks like a smaller version of T. Hawk from Street Fighter and always has. His alternative outfit in MKD/MKA made him look like Chief Thunder from Killer Instinct which was an improvement, but just not enough! I like Nightwolf's concept and his moves are rather cool with him conjuring tomahawks and the bow, but his appearance has always looked plain and boring. The only thing I have ever liked about it was his facial tattoo which is a nice touch, but his outfit is just... NO!

Sektor: I've always found the cyborg ninjas to be a bit silly looking with their beak-like helmets and what not. I had a hard time taking them seriously when they first arrived in MK3, though their appearances in the later games made them look better, however, just not good enough. With that said, I just adored Sektor's alternate outfit in MKA. It looked 10 times better than his original one, and waaaay better than Cyrax's alternate outfit. The newest appearance of Sektor is by far the best one of them all though. He reminds me a bit of Fulgore from the Killer Instinct series, but in a good way. Definately an improvement.

And that is my thoughts on this.

Cage's sunglasses:
I seem to remember watchin' the leaked vid where he was finished by Mileena and it looked like when it zoomed in on the faces the right lens was missing and the arm of it was hanging slightly. Take a look, I could be wrong

Scorpion: Pure Scorpion, I like it,
Sub-Zero: looks like sub-zero, good enough for me.
Night-wolf: same basic indian look, and the jacket makes him look like he came off the reservation. No Complaints here.
Sektor: I dont get this iron man thing people say, he does not look like iron man. I like the eye glow, it works well.
Reptile: the mask makes him look like a pussy, redo the costume and give him a variation of his MK movie mask.
Mileena: looks good when the fight starts, looks hellish when the fight is over, best design besides scorpion.
Cage: full of himself as ever, perfect.
Kung Lao: his old look is perfect and they didn't mess with it, flawless victory.

Scorpion: Less yellow/gold overall, good mask design. 8.5/10
Sub-Zero: Really disappointing and generic looks, a step back. 5/10
Johnny Cage: I don't know if I like the tattoo, pretty cool otherwise. 7/10
Nightwolf: Pretty good I guess, like the details on his render. 7.5/10
Mileena: Sigh. Yep, that's it, "sigh". 3/10
Sektor: Much better than his "slim" MKA look, he should be bulky. 8.5/10
Kung Lao: Classic, but not overally boring for me. Face is good. 8/10
Reptile: In my opinion, Reptile's best design. Good mix of MK2 and MK4. 9/10

Sub-Zero: Honestly, I dig his outfit. Simple. Not overdone. Very oldschool.

Scorpion: Same ol', same ol' to me. Redesign seems pretty much what I expected.

Nightwolf: Seems standard.

Mileena: I can shamelessly admit that I'd do her, without the paperbag.

Sektor: Never looked better.

Reptile: Eh. I'm on the fense. I don't like the clothing, and the large chicken feet need to go. But at least he's more ninja-like without having a 12-inch, mummy-wrapped forhead.

Johnny Cage: Love that cocky tattoo across his chest. He looks just like he should.

Kung Lao: Standard. I think they should hide his face a little more with the hat.
Scorpion: I like his look this time. Although I preffer the skull-like mask, his new mask looks pretty cool, way better than his MKvsDC mask.

Sub Zero: Looks good. But I'm more of a fan of the MK3 unmasked look (not so much of the MKDA gray hair).

Reptile: Looks great. I would change his mask and go with something similar to his mask on the MK movie. For an alt. I would go with his MK4 look. That one was perfect!!!

Shao Kahn: I didn't like his MKA look, and the Kahn we saw in the trailer looked like that. His original helmet, where the skull looked metallic is the one that I would like to see, not the redesigned bone skull helmet.

Raiden: Too simple. His supposed to be a (7' tall?) god. Why does he look so skinny? His MKDA look was perfect.

Mileena: I don't care that much for female characters, but I think her look on this new MK game looks perfect!

Johnny Cage: I wouldn't change anything about his new look. I like it and I also like the tattoo.

Kung Lao: I wouldn't change anything about his look either.

Sektor: The best design I've seen for him so far.

Nightwolf: Bah, I don't care about him that much. Although, I'm a fan of his facepaint (as well as Shang Tsung's facepaint in MK3, which I believe makes him look badass). I liked his MKD alt. with the mohawk.

Mileena - Great look. I prefered her MKD arabic look but still looks great.

Sektor - Spot on not a thing needs to change.

Reptile - Pretty good. He has that slight change in his appearance so that he doesn't look human. I'd prefer a torn ninja outfit

Scorpion - A few refinements of the look without changing it too much. So on par

Sub Zero - Dull. Just seems boring considering how much they've changed up his look over the years.

Kung Lao - Classic design that immediately stands out. I love this design.

Nightwolf - Same classic look with a few refinements. Looks much the same as past games. Looking forward to his alternate.

Cage - Again classic look with some changes. I love the tat it just screams Cage's attitude.

Reptile: Wonderful balance between reptilian and ninja!

Scorpion: Small changes from MK vs DC make all the difference

Sub Zero: Fix the mask and it's great

Mileena: Sexy, perfect for whay she's been set up to be, a cocktease, yet TOTAL TRAP

Sektor: Those small changes make a big difference, great look

Nightwolf: Meh, never cared too much for him

Johnny Cage: I actually like it, it goes well withCage's egotism

Kung Lao: If it aint broke don't fix it, but his hair could use some work
