I don't think that particular picture is old, but it has been known since he was revealed that he fights unmasked. We've seen other pictures, too.

Hes doing a shadow stance, kinda pointless if your not wearing all black in almost complete dark. better to have your hands up to guard your head. cool pic though.

well not ones who had the permanent tracheotomy thing like that, i've met people with that and they can only talk by manually working a device that they have to hold against their neck

this exactly, you can see that he holds the device to his neck, but kabal does no such thing

I'm assuming in this particular fight, it's just battle damage, and the mask has been broken off... Basil Exposition says: I suggest you just ignore it and... try to have fun.

That said...

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
Since he appears in Story mode pre-burning throughout nearly the entirity of Stryker's chapter, I assume an unmasked pre-burning model has been made for him, and is a very likely canidate for his alt costume. (Similar to how we've seen Cage and Liu-Kang's Alts in story mode scenes... and the Klassic Ninja costumes)

Yeah, it's quite obvious in this game he breathes through the hose going into his neck rather than his actual mask, so I am assuming the mask is just there to guard and hide his face, but it isn't needed to live.

I thought he acquired the arm scars and the damage to his face at the same time. But yet in this picture, only his arms are messed up looking?

umm his face looks messed up to. just realistically burned/mangled. Ever see that movie with Mel Gibson where like half his face was burned? Look at his mouth closely.Lips are gone. Looks like the guy from Hannibal after he fell in the pig pen.

No, his face is scarred too. You can't see it in the picture posted in this thread because they're small and the resolution is blurry. I've seen a higher rez version and his face is also scarred.

The thing around is neck is the respirator. The mask is to hide disfigurement.
