Yeah, it's quite obvious in this game he breathes through the hose going into his neck rather than his actual mask, so I am assuming the mask is just there to guard and hide his face, but it isn't needed to live.

in the leaked story mode text, Kano tells Kabal something to the effect of, "No mask, no breath." or "No mask, no life." I can't remember and am too lazy to check.
