Sonya... a different direction.

So I haven't put a whole lot of thought into this so any input is good input. What I was thinking of is a re-envisioning of Sonya. I think this time around have her give up on the LAW part of things and go any means necessary. Sort of a rebel vigilante type of chick.

If anyone has seen Machete, I would like to see Sonya sort of take on the story line of She. A rebel leading a group of mercenaries. Have Jax try to bring her back to the law side while it plays out that in her ending she has a decision to make. I could see her wearing a camo outfit but more rugged and a camo bandanna.

Don't make her BAD per-say but open it up so that there is more story so we don't run into the same Sonya trying to capture Kano type of thing. Seperate Sonya and Jax but have their stories intertwine.

I could see a story FMV show Sonya lay down her badge after the events of the first Mortal Kombat when she realizes there is a whole other plane of existence that the Earthly LAW enforcement can't defend against. Her commisioner tells her that doing this seals her fate and if she walks away then she walks away from everything... and after some thought she does.

Maybe even throw in there that during the events of the first tournament Shang Tsung kills someone close to her. Giving her more of a reason to say that the Earth law enforcement wasn't the protection suited for this kind of a invasion.

If they gave her a cooler story a bit rougher look, I might consider playing as her.... and give her cooler fatalities.

Pro-tip: When you've seen a movie and you come out of the theatre with a buzz, wait at least two months before ascribing the plot to a character in something else you like. Because obviously she should be Kusanagi and Jax is like Batou and they have exciting techno-adventures.

Here's a novel idea: how about if people who have radical suggestions for new character directions take them to "Future Games Discussion" or maybe write them into fanfics for Fan Submissions, instead of hoping MK9 will do things that we already know it's not gonna do.

MK1 thru 3.

The only changes will be Raiden altering history with his bare hands.

How hard is that for people to understand?

This looks like a real woman, if sonya looked like this in the game (or like the mk3 version or like the first movie version) I would perhaps start liking her again. The cross-dresser from MKvsDC made me throw up in my mouth a little bit

I'm a guy with particular tastes, and I'm not even fond of blondes, but she is just jaw-droppingly beautiful, insanely talented, and she's a bonafide super-mom and hero. I hear she even trolls the MK forums from time to time.

I like Sonya the way she is , her "history" included.Her personality is fine as a military babe with a do it herself attitude. Sonya should always be MK's military babe, with a hard edge. I don't want her oversexed like the picture above a few posts up(the babe only in her bra) . Generally speaking outfits have been fine since MK1.

I hope the MK team keeps her in a respectable fashion as a military woman, and keep the skimpy outfit away from her. I've been somewhat disappointed at how Milena and Kitana look as of this game. They went from ninja assassins too skimpy assassins to I hate to see Sonya go slightly overboard in terms of showing too much skin like Mileena and Kitana.

As long as Sonya has her military look, without showing to much skin,like her previous looks, I will be happy.

In short what I am saying don't fix what isn't broken.

I actually dig anti-hero protagonists so I like the OP's spin on Sonya. The guys are right though that it's easy to get caught up in the re-boot idea and view it as a blank-slate type of reimagining for canon where it really isn't logical or needed. Rewriting Sonya like the OP describes, while not a bad idea, just really doesn't fit.

See that's the problem with introducing time-travel into an established story; it opens up this whole action / consequence can of worms and can alter the decisions a character could make and more importantly HAS made in the past. It really hinges all on what Raiden's actions turn out to be since he's the proverbial "Butterfly Effect" crux.

While it's been discussed before, Sonya and Jax's biggest character development tedium are a result of being directly tied to a sparsely realized minor villain and his organization. If more depth was provided to Kano and the Black Dragons it would provide opportunity for Sonya and Jax to become more interesting.

Again though, since this is a fighting game with a constrained opportunity to focus on story in general, anything that deviates into a sub-plot doesn't get that much screen time.

I see no reason why Raiden's choices would not affect the actual characters. It's easy to rewrite instead of retell by using the popular domino effect as a basis. I'm not saying it's going to happen, I'm just saying it could.

That having been said, I hope to see some sort of update in Sonya's story in particular. Whether minor or major, I hope it's something strong enough to deviate her from being so 100% engulfed in the Special Forces/Law/OIA side of things, and so 100% taken by Kano and the Black Dragon. This is a story that certainly does not need to be told yet again, in the same manner, without any surprises or twists.

I like the OP's ideas to an extent, and have suggested something similar in the past. It would be interesting to see how the writers(?) would tackle "rogue" Sonya. The way I see it, "rogue" Sonya would have to off Kano for good directly following MK2's events, and take to being more of a player in the actual battle against whatever threat the world is facing. There's no need for Sonya to have the very same enemy in almost every game, and this is definitely something I'd like for Raiden to indirectly help make happen.

Well, as heroic and courageous as Sonya Blade is, I admire and respect Kerri Hoskins so much more as a person, not 'cause she's insanely good looking (she is) but because she's a wonderful person, human being, and mother as well.

You can check out the tribute site for her children here. It's a bit sad and heartwarming, just fyi.

Let me just say that I was a wee bit tired when I wrote the original post this morning. I just think, use this time to rebuild characters stories. Sonya, Jax, Kano, and others all have a subplot that is tired. Do we really want to see it again? Especially in a game where the possibility of change is at its greatest it has been. IMO, Military Sonya is a tired story and character. How much farther can she go? She doesn't need to smuggle Edenians into Earth realm, although I did chuckle at that idea... but she could definetly become more of a bad ass. I dont want to sketch anything out because when I draw girls they look more manly then some of the previous versions of Sonya in the 3d era.

I'd be against this idea for multiple reasons.

First off, I don't think MK needs anymore anti-heroes. She may not be evil in this scenario, but she's going to needlessly cause problems for other characters.

Second, Sonya's story isn't the problem. Actually, her problem was Kano's story, which chained her down in the early games.

Third, I hated Machete. It wasn't the grindhouse film that it was advertised to be, and the story/characters who were supposed to be cheesy and over-the-top ended up being flat and justly badly written. If anything, it was more like a 90s Michael Bay film than a B-movie. Disappointing considering I loved Planet Terror.

I like Machete, but I don't think that Sonya should be like She. For her story and character, they need to make her less brash and more of a competent soldier.

I don't see how Kano dragged Sonya's story down, considering she stopped being about hunting Kano after MK1.

Her MK3 story revolved entirely around trying to warn the government about Kahn coming to invade, them not believing in fairy tale monsters, and then after she and Jax help save the world, they have the proof and the pull to create a new military division devoted entirely to exploring and defending Earth from other dimensions, the Outerworld Investigation Agency.

Now, Kano and Sonya did have a fight in MK3, but that was the last wrapping up of old business and the fact that it happened wasn't even mentioned until MKDA, because Kano was still obsessed about beating her, but she had stopped giving a shit about him and thought he was dead. And it had nothing to do with the Black Dragon gang, Kano was working for Shao Kahn at that point and has been an Outworld minion ever since. He himself hasn't had any ties to the BD since MK1.
