From the recent Kabal reveal we got our first look at MK9's Shadow Priests guarding the Soul Chamber arena. I think they look amazing - Scythe wielding omnipresent shadow specters. A chance to play as one of these beings has quickly climbed to the top of my most wanted DLC list. Thanks to RazorEdge for the pic.

I don't have a pic for you, but I pretty much guarantee a shadow priest will never be dlc,
They are a type of warrior, I don't think NRS would add a grunt for a dlc character. Especially when the team juggling the other 800 guys they made.

I personally was dying to talk about them also. They look amazing.
I would fear backlash from the fanbase if a SP was taken over a demanded character for DLC. lets say just for the sake of speculation, say Rain diddnt make it, there would be Nuclear war over it.
Very impressed, wouldnt turn down that idea at all. Perhaps a good idea for a new character? A Conflicted SP with some personal motivations to leave the collective, OR a really devoted SP and follow the ambitions of them being commanded. a Higher ranked SP?
interesting.

They're like an elite guard for Shao Kahn. If you remember the TV series MK Konquest the shadow priests were insanely powerful - more so than Tsung or any other warrior.

Sure, theyre important and popular in their own right. And I do like them. But lets be realistic here. Casselman put it best.
Imagine they bumped out established MK characters like Rain and Kenshi, for a variation of a background soldier? Most MK fans would riot.
I think the idea of a shadow priest character fir future games has some merit. But as of now, I'm almost positive we will not see one as a playable character.

I'm all for a future playable, just not DLC for this game.

What sort of powers do they have??

Magic of some kind, don't remember what. It's been a while since I played Shaolin Monks.

I would love a Shadow Priest as a playable character as long as we a) never see their face and b) their feet never touch the ground.

There seem to be two separate kinds of Shadow Priests in this game.
The ones in the Soul Chamber have black skin like Noob Saibot and look a bit Grim Reaper-ish, so they could in theory be members of the Brotherhood.
The Church stage has ones who look human and have purple robes which is more classic, and they're clearly doing something that's actually priestly, but they're not floating.
The Evil Tower stage from MK2 is also apparently in the game, but we haven't seen it yet. Now, that stage in the original had what we know for sure to be a Shadow Priest floating in the window. So I wonder what that one will look like.

Personally, I preferred the old MK2 look. It was simpler, yet very effective. I'd also LOVE to be able to use one of these guys in battle. Sure, I could think of a few post-MK3 characters that I might want more, but one of these guys would absolutely be in my top 5.
I don't know if I ever saw them as grunts, but I'd concede that if one of them did get a chance to be a regular character, there'd have to be a good reason for it. I wouldn't want to see a story where they simply entereted the tournament to serve Shang Tsung or Shao Khan. If they do that, then yeah, they're just a grunt, a servant, a lackey etc.
They'd have to have their own unique name, identity, story, motivations, moves etc. Do that though, and I'm absolutely on board!

Good call Razor. Before this I never thought of the robed figure in the Chrurch as a Shadow Priest. Do you think there are two different classifications of them in this game? I think the shadow specter version would be everyone's top choice.

It is worth noting that if you are playing as Shang Tsung, then you are playing as a Shadow Priest. He is their leader.

I'm not totally convinced the wraith-looking one is even a shadow priest since a more classic looking ones there.

I would also prefer the purple one if we were talking about playable characters here, because the one in the Soul Chamber looks pretty cool as a background element, but is way too bland to be an actual character.
Plus, Shadow Priests should be purple. They just should.

The shadow priests look badass in the Soul Chamber. They have close resemblance to Noob Saibot and as mentioned, they might be related through the Brotherhood of Shadow.
However, I've always seen the shadow priests as immortal (or at least close to immortal) beings who cannot interfere with mortals. In MK Conquest, non-canon as it may be, they were Kahn's last resort and couldn't be touched (literally) by any of Kahn's enemies, including Shang Tsung. That sort of adds to the image I have of them. So I certainly don't want them to be playable.

Well Conquest's use of them was kind of a bizarre, storyless deus ex machina designed to kill off all the characters for a cliffhanger season finale.
Like I said, in canon, Shang Tsung is the head of the Shadow Priests, and therefore the most powerful one. They're just a guild of mages who works for Kahn.

While we're on the subject of playable/DLC Shadow Priests, what kinda moveset should they have so they're not exactly the same as Shang Tsung?
I think that we should definitely see at least one new fighter in the form of DLC. Of course we should obtain Rain and the likes from the 2d era but other than that nothing is compulsory really. I'd be delighted to see another shadow priest finally reveal themself because Shang Tsung is hardly depicted as a shadow priest anymore.

They look too much like Noob.

Hmm imagine one of their fatalities; Soul Reap- Hack the loser with the scythe, and when slices them(victim scream in agony), you see like the 'soul' of the victim 'attached' to the blade and then the Shadow Priest....idk... absorbs it while the victims soul is also screaming O_o?
Idk im sure someone else can come up with something better ;)

i would not mind shadow priests, or whatever the dark floating guys are in the new soul chamber, being a new character. i lean more towards the the darker priests being related to brotherhood of shadow, and the priests in the church being actual shadow priests. who knows. it would not be a stretch to say one of the priests broke away from shang's clergy, or broke away from shinnok's brotherhood, or that one was exalted higher in power for their loyalty and ordered to spy or attack established characters.
on a side note, the tower from mk2 has been mentioned somewhere? not that i am implying that info is false, just that i have not read it yet and the tower is a HUGE favorite of mine, and i have been worried that it would not make the cut. the tomb, the tower and the portal from mk2 are mandatory, imo, but have not seen them yet. we have more than enough from mk3 for stages and we sure as shit dont need urban environments over outworld environments. we do not need the bank, or another street from mk3.

Can't imagine playing as a classic shadow priest, especially since Shaolin Monks' depiction of them as mage-type warriors who prefer to hang back and zap you with magic. They don't seem like martial artists, on the whole. Not to say it couldn't happen, but had I the choice I'd take a Courtyard guard as a character to develop first (Kung Lao shenanigans notwithstanding).
