The thing is, in the very first game(s) there was no mention of his wife and child being killed, just that he was survived by them after he had died.
I would like to point out that Poison's gender is actually a concious decision.
In the US she is a post-op transsexual while in Japan he is a man who simply tucks away his bussiness end. The problem rose from putting female opponents into Final Fight and since this was two and a half decades ago, they went with a compromise that perhaps complicated this mess a bit.
otherwise no, shis gender isn't actually relevant aside a few stingy jokes in game and the UDON comics.
TLDR. Poison is a bad example.

This whole thread is a debacle, not many people who play read the bios anyway. So, how would they know? This seems ridiculously forced. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Most players are in the heterosexual demographic, just imagine the outcome of this. Russia will probably ban this game for the references and Warner Bros and NRS loses money over it. See the bigger picture.

Not in the game, no, but I believe it was mentioned in the comics that John Tobias made for the game.

Though we agree on some points, it is the very execution of making a gay character in the game we were disagreeing on. But that discussion is put on the shelves now.

Actually, both Poison and Roxy were both declared as "newhalves" in their concept art, which means they are transgender. The whole "misunderstanding between the Japanese and the US version" is just a myth.
This video proves it:

Not a myth. Poison was definitely post-op in the west and pre-op in the east until SFxT when she was officially made post-op in all territories.Actually, both Poison and Roxy were both declared as "newhalves" in their concept art, which means they are transgender. Actually, it wasn't. Scorpion makes no mention of his family when he confronts Sub-Zero on the boat in the first comic, and in the MKII comic he only says that he is the guardian of the younger Sub-Zero.

That's because I am mixing it up... Sorry.
From what I understand, Scorpion is killed by Bi-Han which is the reason he returns as a spectre raised by Quan Chi in the first MK. But in MK4 Scorpion wants to kill Kuai Liang, because Quan Chi told him that he is responsible for killing his clan and family... I believe that is how it goes.
And then in MK9, they just mixed it all together.

This thread is still open. Woah.
It really seems like one or two people here just need to work their sexuality-related issues out somewhere other than this videogame. I don't think MK is a good platform to look to for cultural/moral/humanitarian issues. There are far more appropriate venues for those sorts of issues. MK is about megalomaniacal maniacs beating each other to death. If you are trying to identify with ANY of them, I might be worried.

maybe he could be an alien who landed in Moscow and since the first thing he saw was a human male he became attracted to them like when a baby would recognize their mother at birth. so he is a gay Russian alien.
