I can explain the hate.

It's not hate for Kitana, because if you look- it's Kitana's most steadfast fans that are the most upset. People are upset, because the MK team has repeatedly dumped on Kitana with the last few games (MKA, MKSM, MKDC). Confirming her appearance in the new game means that the MK team will most likely ruin her further, and that's why everyone's upset.

I'm used to it. This is how I felt with each new iteration of MK that took my favorite character, Reptile, from the noble warrior he once was and degraded him into a joke. Reading his bio and ending for MK2, I often wonder where that defiant, noble warrior disappeared to.

True, but they're aiming for an edgier, bloodier MK, so they might rub some of those elements on Kitana and basically toughen her up a bit in order to make her fit into the game's design.

That's what I think anyway, and it's why I haven't lost all hope for her. I really don't think Disney-Princess Kitana will go well with the direction they're aiming for, so... *fingers crossed*

That's good and all, but I could see them going too far the other way and making her "SUPER EDGY TO THE MAXX!!" And that would just piss me off too. Kinda' like what they did to Scorpion. He's just sooooo bad and brooding. *snort*

I don't remember Reptile being a noble warrior, to be honest. In Mortal Kombat I, he didn't really have much of a story. He was a bodyguard to Shang Tsung, as it was revealed. He didn't really do a great job in the story, as Liu Kang defeated the Shanger.

MKII saw Reptile return in his bodyguard role, but he essentially didn't play much of a part, as Earthrealm's forces defeated Shao Kahn's without too much hassle. Everyone from Earthrealm survived the battle, actually -- and they even won Sonya back.

MK3 originally didn't see Reptile in the game at all, leading me to believe he was dead after MKII at the time. He did return in other versions of the game, hunting down Kitana for Shao Kahn. I'll be honest, Jade's story did lead me to believe that she was killed by Reptile in this game, which would have been cool, but still doesn't make Reptile "noble."

MK4 saw him as a murderer of his own race, de-evolving and all that jazz. It's cool to like Reptile and all, but where did this "noble warrior" stuff come from? I truthfully may have missed it, but you can't fault the MK Team if you made it up in your head. tongue

Kitana's storyline, though, of being a bad-ass assassin is there. Her story of freeing her realm from her wicked step-father's rule is canon, and having such a story makes Kitana one of the more important characters in the franchise. Yeah, they have gone too "soft" with her, and I can understand that, but it seems so silly to not expect a character with her weight back for the next generation of Mortal Kombat.

He's referring to the MK2 and, to an extent, MK3 endings, which showed Reptile standing up to Shao Kahn and saving/avenging his people...which, had they been canon, would've established Reptile with some heroism and nobility.

Obviously, neither ending happened and that's not the direction they ultimately wound up taking him...to reppy's chagrin.

Exactly. I know no one else really thinks of Reptile as being heroic or noble, but he's the guy I always used in MK2, and for me- that was the game that really established who he was for me.

Every subsequent MK game was another slap in the face, and I could always picture some guys down at MK HQ just giggling about how evil they've made Reptile this time. Or how stupid. Or how much of a loser. At one point I even devised a pretty workable theory on how the Reptile of MK1 and 2 might have been a different guy from the Reptile of MK3-MKA. That's how much I hated what they had done to him. I think I would rather they had killed Reptile in part 2 than degrade him into the joke he became.

With Kitana... I don't know. I see no reason to kill off Sindel. In fact, allowing Sindel to remain in Edenia and govern over that realm would free up Kitana to pursue her own ambitions.
Of course, I don't think Shao Kahn or Shang Tsung should be in the next game either. The Outworld arc should be done with. Those villains should be filed away in a history book. It would allow Kitana to get away from Edenia, from Outworld, from Shao Kahn and all those tied to him, and do something entirely different.

The war with Outworld should have ended with Armageddon. That was the game that was supposed to wrap up the gigantic Outworld vs. Everyone arc, right? So let it be done with.

Do something different!

Honestly, though, it should be pointed out that Reptile wasn't going to be anything special as a possible "noble warrior": I mean, it's not like there isn't already that kind of character in MK. Considering how little developed Reptile was at the time of those endings that never came true, I can say you didn't miss much, so I don't think there is much reason to be upset, beyond personal taste. Not to disrespect you, but after so many years of Reptile being written that way, without ever being "noble" in canon, one should simply move on.
With Kitana, it seems like they want to go for a 180, disregarding years of established canon, I think it's a bit worse. Personally I'm disappointed, but we are still talking about videogames, after all tongue

I'm obviously happy; however, I do agree that she always seems to get the short end of the stick when she does make an appearance. I guess I have to disagree when it comes to gameplay in MKvDC though. I found her quite easy to play with and I had some pretty impressive streaks. I would like to see her design and storyline make a much larger advance forward than she has in the past.

No offence taken. And don't worry- I've long since given up on the MK team ever doing anything with Reptile other than making him a dumbass henchman.
