Wow, great thread!

...

Seriously though, if it were up to us, I would make the eighth game the conclusion... Mortal Kombat: Battle of the Sans. Well, fine then. I like it! wink

I would imagine that Mk7 will be the last game...

I'm a Fan of Mortal Kombat, not a Fanatic, so if the series does end, it wouldn't bother me too much. Don't get me wrong; Mk is great, but I think I have other things to do, aside from playing VideoGames.

I would like the series to end on its 8th title, but I would assume that Mk would lose its appeal to the wider audience after so many games.

Fans always want Mk to go forever, yet they are forgetting the wider audience of casual gamers who couldn't care less... This wider audience is the same that got the Mk series going in the first place. Now, Mk has waxed and waned to become a distant moon(, much like the one hovering over the pit stage...) and Mortal Kombat, while still a selling top title, will never reclaim its former glory.
Fanatical devotees to this franchise will still cling vainly to it, as they try and revive their nostalgic Arcade days... and I say.. good on them!
However, all good things must come to an end... unless, they reinvent themselves. In other words; for Mk to be truly successful, it has to retain all of its classical elements for the Fans, but offer something fresh and unseen for the ....casual gamer. grin

They're gonna have to end the series sometime. New games are gonna get stupid, if the new ones aren't already. The ideas will get stale, or the will just plain run out of ideas. I'd rather they end it on a good note with the perfect MK game. Maybe MK7 or MK8 should be the end.

Depends how popular, and more importantly for Midway, how much money the series makes. Despite it's bullshit, meaningless awards like "Walmart award for best game with a ninja called Scorpion in 2004" or whatever, MKD really wasn't a huge success, at least outside of the States. Real, trusted games reveiwers generally gave it mediocore scores at best, and sales haven't been brilliant.

Rightly or wrongly, many fighting game fans consider MK to be a joke, and MKD's reliance on gimmicks to cover a crappy fighter didn't help. A lot of work needs to be done on the game mechanics if the series is to have any hope of becoming big again,. A dud now and again can be ignored, every long running series has at least one. But if MK7 fails to deliver the good fighting game we all want, I'm not sure if the series could survive much longer.

We have the MKSM adventure game coming up, and so far, it looks very good. I hope that this can kickstart interest in MK among gamers, and in the time MKSM is out, hopefully Midway will work on MKD's many flaws, and make MK7 a great beat em up that can compete with series's like Street Fighter and Tekken. MK nearly died once in the late 90's, and I don't want this to happen again, as it might just be terminal next time.

That is a good point they probabley stop at like 10 or somethin, and then start making Mortal Kombat like Sholin Monks. And start all over again. And really it's not what we want, it's what Ed Boon and the rest of them want. If they want to go upto 50 then they will, as long as they get money out of it.

I must admit Im a huge MK fanatic, but I also realize that MK has gotta end sometime (but hopefully it really doesnt) Yet, the market these days is surprisingly ecepting of different styles of fighting games, including or maybe even especially mortal kombat...I wonder of there will be an anouncement of mortal kombat after mk7 is done....Also remember, Ed boon said they sould be switching between fighting games and adventure games, so it might never end....

Well that would suck! I mean sure it would be cool to see a bunch of action/adventure, and they're cool, and all. But that would tottaly destroy the bases of the game...Beating the shit out of your enemy in a fighting style

Well if they do make it into an action/adventure game, they can still put in 2 player versus modes(which they probably will if that happens). I also agree that all games that are series, come to an end eventually. I just hope the MK series doesn't end too soon.

I think MK will end when the consoles will end too which is impossible.

So, MK will not end but will pass through gaps in the future like in the old days when shifting from 2D to 3D took few years for MK4 to appear. Also, MK5 took another few years to appear in the latest consoles.

Who knows what consoles and their new inventions will do or how long will it take time to shift from 3D or any other feature to a new computer technology like having real characters/people graphics, etc.

There might be a complete exclusion for MK title to make it look like it ended and to be replaced by a new title, which will surely lead to new main characters and storylines but the fighting concept will remain the same.

Ed Boon himself once said in an interview that we can expect at least 20 more MK games in our lifetime.

I too would like MK to end sometime, I just don't like it when things keep going on and wear themselves out.

Even if they do end the series, they would eventualy have to bring it back. Like Sindel said, MK is very popular. Ending the series would upset a LOT of people, not to mention possibly lowering the annual income. They would have to either bring it back or make an equally popular series.

Midway will make an equally good series when Hell Freezes over. Anyway, I think Mk will go on until Midway goes out of Buisness.

Street Fighter and MK shouldn't even be in the same sentence. That game died long ago, and what's out now is garbage. And what makes Tekken so much better than MKD? People talk about mechanics and stuff, but when I play a fighting game...the only thing I do is punch and kick...as with all fighting games. The only fighting game I think we need to care for is Soul Caliber. Though, they should change the mechanics in the sense that the controls should be way more fluid and free.
