When I first saw the stream I was pissed. But when I played the game, I was very happy.

They buffed the Leg Grab, much more usefull now, the Drop Kick too, you can now make combos from it, however it takes a while to truly master it, sometimes you miss, but it has much more range now, same thing about the Arc Kick.

Covert Ops is very hard to use, the parry is too fast so sometimes you miss the move from the enemy. Military Stance is what truly shines here, the grab works even on block, the kartweel can be used to extend combos (still not as good as MK9) and the reverse kartweel hits low, the opponent never knows whats coming.

Special Forces is what truly surprised me, I love the homing missile, you can use it and than run at the opponent, they never know what to do, if they punch me the missile gets them, if they stay on block they will take damage. Kamikaze is fun to use too, when they opponent is down they don't think about blocking so the drone hits them. The only thing I think it's useless is The Heavy Blast. Special Forces is great to deal with zoners, specially Kenshi.

Demolition is fun too, is the one I used least.

Anyway, Sonya is very fun to play, but she was better in MK9 and MK4. MK4 is still her best version, I really miss the Stun Kiss and Bicycle Kick. Design wise she is at her best.

I didn't try her out a lot but I can say this from what I tried, Fuck NRS for taking away her EX-Kartwheel.

That move was the fucking best, now she only has it in her Military stance which really isn't as good as MK9. I can officially say they ruined Sonya's gameplay... Somewhat.

She is certainly not MK9's Sonya but she still has different things that could make her a really good character in terms of gameplay.

I left her for now because I was really disgusted at them taking her EX-Kartwheel, that move was the fucking best thing. I'll for sure try her out eventually and try to figure out different things to do with her, she is one of the few female characters I like and she was my 2nd main in MK9 so I'll try to do what I can with her and as best as I can but for now it's Hat throwing and Gunslinging time for me xD.

Good gameplay.
A lot harder to master then mk9.
Think she is higher tier then ever before.

Covert ops is great with the military stance. Only thing I can complain about is her parry. It is very hard to use and does not parry with all the punches and kicks.

Demolition is awesome and so is special Forces. I was affraid for special Forces but the variation is a lot better to handle then i ever thought.
Only think i am missing is her military stance in both variations.

Fatalitys are pretty good. I only miss her interaction in the fatalitys the drone does everything for her so i am hoping on a klassic fatality for her to.

Her Brutalities on the other hand are epic. Those are more then awesome. Some are pretty hard but thats no biggy.

Her specials are good. But her EX specials are just complete bullshit they are not stronger just more armored what i hate.

Overall Sonya 8/10 love her and stays my favorite

She's pretty great. My thoughts echo a lot of what has been said above. However she has slipped from being my main online. That honour now goes to Mileena. Story wise she's the best she's been in years.

Must agree with ya on the online thing.
Love Sonya and her gameplay but i use her for towers and everything. Sometimes online. But mostly i use Liu Kang now

Seeing Some online assholes cant win fairly unless they throw knives or fireballs or iceballs etc. And in those cases Sonya aint an the best one to pick online.

Ive always loved Sonya, but i have 2 main issues with her in MKX:

1- that goofy ass hovercraft. Seriously... Id much rather have a variation based on her poison/fire kiss (which she alludes to in her x-ray) and her fatalities... are pretty meh too. That drone.. i just dont buy it

2- They borrowed too heavily from Jill. From the look, to the stance (MvsC3... and its not the only one.. Im looking at you world-holding shinnok), to the air knee slam (Jill's signture in RE5 and returns in MvsC3 as well)
The outfit is virtually the same...

Sonya Blade has a more complete fighting style than she ever has had before. You know with all the tools at her disposal I actually feel more immersed in matches and fighting than ever before. If I lose Im.only am motivated to get better, which is actually possible with so many facets to her gameplay.

She was outright aggressive and accessible in MK9 but as much as I loved having easy moves like the.ex Kartwheel, I have to admit that I.got bored of her MK9 version too quickly it felt repetitive.

Now I would say she plays quite different and is more rewarding in my opinion, I've had the.game for three weeks and I'm stilll learning something new when I pick up the game.whereas in MK9 I was done with Sonya in a week's time and the gameplay got stale within a month, I barely even practiced, but in MkX it's been hours trying to figure her best strings out, trying to figure backup plans if kombos flop online and escape routes, quickest and easiest damage options.

There is no one method of playing her in MkX and I'm not even talking about her variations. Just covert ops.

Ofcourse there is always room for improvement, and since the ex bar has become more precious due to her excellent xray, her ex leg grab should be more damaging, and preferably have bounce properties for a follow up string.

Her Parries whilst nice to have are pretty hollow at this point because their usefulness is limited due to.the risks, her ex Parries should be her regular Parries.

She should be given another low string for variety

Military stance should have a fourth attack option, in place of 2's cancel.

For nostalgia purposes and style, it would have been nice to have brought back her rising bicycle kick, which has been absent for a while, in fact this game would have been a perfect place to debut the move as a special for juggle finishers since her game is.so dependent on juggles.

in terms of her look and her costumes, they're practical if a little uninspired especially with the colour schemes, I mean MK 4's purple variation is till today a favourite of mine and red as well. As much as I wasn't a fan of the excessive cleavage in MK9, I.do miss the skin, the midriff window and her shorts. I mean I get it they've turned over a new leaf with their female designs but did they have to cover up Sonya more than a nun.

But still her alternate tournament outfit is a clever throw back to her MK3 look, her General Blade or Jill Valentine Sonya is a fave of mine and I would have preferred an even more similar alternate to Jill and Nina Williams purple variation lol!

major blade outfit washes her out and looks very dull, largely to the dowdy look and dull colour scheme, the brown alternative is a little better.

Really hoping motherland Sonya and Klassic Sonya pick up the pace when it comes to outfits.

Fatalities are sub par in this game but her first three brutalities make up for it, still though it would be nice to have her Klassic kiss of death back again.

Overall though Im a big fan of MkX Sonya, and I.don't want her to be replaced with Cassie.

Have a few minutes, gonna write down a few techs that help me win with her, especially online. I have a very decent win/loss ratio going mostly thanks to her, and these are some of what I've learned to be most helpful to remember.

Covert Ops

Don't underestimate the insane range of F2. It's outside most other character's normals. I like to finish the string (F2,B1) for a hard knockdown at close range, then follow with one of my mix-up strings.

My go-to combo-starting string is, without a doubt, B1,4. 80% of the time, they won't catch on how to properly block it until there's no way they can come back from all the damage. It seriously amazes me how my opponents nearly ALWAYS get hit by B1,4, which I then naturally combo into MS+4.

BTW, my go-to juggle from MS+4, for damage, is B3,3,4,Leg Grab (let both elbows hit). For pushing into the corner, replace Leg Grab with MS+1. My ideal combo is Dive Kick,2,1,3,MS+4,B3,3,4,Leg Grab. Easy enough to perform for 12 hits and 32% damage.

Going back to the mix-up strings: B1,4 (again) is ideal, with good range, quick and tricky. If you're worried you're using it too much and the opponent might start reading it, throw in a B3,3,4. Use these two strings to your advantage, making it so that they never know whether to block you high or low. Likewise, if they've been playing you enough that they're reading your strings all the way into Kartwheel, easy remedy: make use of the other MS commands, especially the throw. It'll let them know that the Kartwheel is merely your favorite move, but not your only option.

I utilize most of my strings from charging at them from mid-screen. If I'm at an ideal distance, I run at them into either F2 or B1,4 (B3,3,4 has short range, so it's not good for running in). If you're at a closer range, you can also utilize your strings after an cross-over overhead jump-punch to confuse them.

For the parries: you'll start landing them more and more often the more you use them. There's really no textbook tech for them. It's all about getting used to them and feeling your opponent out. Surprisingly, they counter Scorpion's Teleport and Mileena's Roll if you throw it out at the right time. Also Kano's balls (lolsorry). Don't be afraid to throw them out if you're in a good spot to not get fully punished---it has enough frames that you can counter all those normals and specials, but not enough that you'll eat a full combo punish (unless you're nose-to-nose with your opponent; even then, I tend to get away with it).

Remember Sonya's D+3. It's her best poke. It'll beat out most of your opponent's normals and stop them from punishing you at close range. Throw out one or two of these, and suddenly you have the advantage. I like to follow up my one or two D3s with B3,3,4.

One thing about B3,3,4: the second elbow of 4 hits high, not mid. I suggest not letting that second elbow hit on block; only if you're juggling them. It's not hard to figure out that the second elbow can be ducked and punished with a low poke.

Dive kick: Don't overuse it. When you do, try to aim for their feet if you can. If you aim for the head and they block, you become more punishable. A lower hit on block will have Sonya flip away far enough that you can retreat, or even poke them with a D3 when they inevitably try to walk in to hit you.

Leg Grab is great for wake-up. I get them in the corner a lot with this, given how fast it is. The safest way to wake up with Leg Grab is after tech-rolling away, if they try to run in to rush you down. Don't underestimate how quickly it starts up. It's very useful this time around. If you find that your opponent is rushing you with quick enough attacks that beat your wake-up Leg Grab, armor it. That's what it's there for. Sonya doesn't need meter for anything, so don't feel bad. This and the X-Ray are what her meter's there for.

Speaking of which: Getting overwhelmed by a zoner? It's not ideal, but an EX Arc Kick will get you out of that bind; it'll do this pretty easily for you, but you'll have to know how to follow up, because a zoner will always be a zoner, and they'll just try to get away again. If you do resort to EX Arc Kick to beat a torrent of projectiles, I suggest running in after them and unleashing an F2,B1 string when you're in rage for the hard knockdown at close. Now you get to rush like you're supposed to!

Ideally, however, you'd beat a zoner by being patient and dexterous. Duck their projectiles, and walk toward them in-between shots. If you're in a safe enough range, Dive Kick over a projectile to cover bonus distance and scare the crap out of them. Trust me, they'll freak out pretty quickly that you're closing in (Covert Ops Sonya is a nightmare at close-range) and start making mistakes. Usually they'll try to jump at you to kick you away. Read their jumps, or walk/run out of their attack range and counter with your F2. I beat my Ice Clone Sub-Zeroes using this freak-them-out tactic. Just stalk them like Predator and close in like Jason in-between their dumb little projectiles, and they'll soon freak and do something punishable. In this specific case, however, remember his Slide! That's the Sub-Zero freakout move. As you close in, block low whenever you feel he might slide. There's no punish for blocking low at a distance. Also throw your Rings when you get a chance. It might hit them out of making their Ice Clone, and it's added pressure to stimulate their freakout time.

I'll share some Demolition stuff another time if anyone wants. Was having a tough time with this one, but I'm getting the hang of it! It's fun when you learn it well.

Thanks for the tips Leo, I'll be sure to incorporate f+2, B+1

some more tips and tricks I utilise

the Xray is imperative to my game, and since there is a 90% chance its going to be used I wanted to maximise the damage I could get from it with as little trouble as possible.

So far these are the best options to follow up after an Xray,

if the match is laggy follow up the Xray with an Arc kick that will give you 39% damage.

under normal circumstancesI dash forward( F,F) 2,1, U+4 for your oponent to easily eat 45% worth of pain! Seriously all that red on the life bar looks glorious!

Military stance is used not only for combos but also for poking and anti air, to be specific MS, 3, it has range and it has a nasty bite, pokes you low or takes airbourne oppoenent off the air. MS, 1 brings variety, the forward Kartwheel is too dangerous to do by it self.

Also Zoners arent really an issue Block, space yourself Arc Kick their faces in, Block jump in a particular direciton in the air, dive kick, jump, dash, Sonya is very fast, she makes up ground really quickly, also use the Energy Rings as a distraction, do it and then run or ark kick or dive kick.

Parries have been a source of pain for me, 80% of the time I get punished for even daring to bring them out, but I have never attempted to use them against specials so thats an interesting observation.

eit one more thing I tend to finish my juggles after military stance 4, with jump+1, air throw. its easier and gets you above 30% if you start with a dive kick.

I was surprised on how well Sonya's Covert Ops variations plays out. On the stream they didn't do too good of a job but overall satisfied. Although I feel her primary, general blade, tournament costumes are extremely identical. Which is upsetting but better than not having her in game at all.

I've a tried a bit of all of her variations, and I like Covert Ops the best so far. Conceptually, all of her variations make sense, and I like that NRS is going for that military route with her gameplay. While she'll probably be pretty good in the long run, I'm not too interested in playing as her overall.
