Rate final MKX roster (MK characters only)
If this final roster of MK characters had been from the start, how would you have rated it?
I give it two separate ones, one considering the story and the other just stand alone.
1. Scorpion
2. Sub-Zero
3. Reptile
4. Ermac
5. Tremor
6. Goro
7. Liu Kang
8. Sonya
9. Johnny Cage
10. Kano
11. Raiden
12. Kung Lao
13. Kitana
14. Mileena
15. Jax
16. Cyrax
17. Sektor
18. Cyber Smoke
19. Tanya
20. Quan Chi
21. Shinnok
22. Kenshi
23. Bo Rai Cho
24. Kotal Kahn
25. Kung Jin
26. Cassie Cage
27. Takeda
28. Jacqui
29. Ferra/Torr
30. D'vorah
31. Erron Black
I listed Triborg as 3 separate characters, because basically they are Cyrax, Sektor & Cyber Smoke in one.
As a stand alone roster I think it's very good, a very solid 8.5/10 - just a handful I dislike in general or the way they play / lack moves / depth so just bland (Ermac, Reptile, Cassie, Kotal Kahn, Takeda, Jacqui, Erron Black, Kenshi, Shinnok, Sonya & Johhny Cage). This leaves 20/31 which I would play, which is a lot.
Given the story, I give it a 6.5 because Baraka, Fujin, Rain, Nightwolf, Smoke, Kabal deserve spots over some characters who just shouldn't have been on the roster at all. Then there's the bland new ones who are part of the story, but just undeveloped and lack creativity.

Fujin and Sareena aside (I'd put them Instead of Tanya and Tremor), I had all the characters I was interested in.
I could not be any happier with the roster. I kinda learned to like Tremor, Tanya and Bo ' Rai Cho more than usual.
The roster is a solid 9 out of 10 for me.
Kenshi lacking a chapter in story mode is a wound that doesn't want to heal.

9/10 for the roster. I would have wanted Sareena in and possibly Ermac or Reptile out. The newcomers are fantastic additions to the cast especially Erron Black, Kotal Kahn and D'Vorah. Certainly left a better impression than most MK characters in my opinion.

Roster: 5
I literally would.have replaced 50% of the roster. I think we could do without a lot of these MK1-3 chars, especially with their relatives.

Rating only MK characters, I'd say a 6.5 out of 10. Why? Basically, because of the abundance of Special Forces or the family related characters. I find it ridiculous that this roster put the emphasis on the Cage and Briggs family while neglecting so many high potential characters. If Sonya was in the story but an unplayable character or perhaps even DLC and we had, say, Reiko or Sareena instead, my rating would have jumped up to 8 at least.
Counting the guest characters, a 3.0 out of 10. Why? Because 4 guests in a 33 count roster is TOO FUCKING MUCH.

Honestly, I feel like they really dropped the ball by not including Reiko, Fujin, and even Li Mei and Sareena.
Fucking Bo' makes it and they don't?
The addition of Tremor makes me really happy. This tri-borg thing is a cool way to bring the cyborgs in (after fans were rightfully pissed that not one of them made the roster), but I'd much rather have had a fully-realized Cyrax or Sektor, with variations.
Goro is getting really stale. Why not Kintaro, or even TRY to figure out how to make Motaro work in the modern games? Since MK is back to a 2D plane, I don't understand why Motaro is seemingly impossible for the MK team to figure out.
The new characters are good for the most part.
Oh, and they really nailed Tanya in this game. She's one of my favorites.

I think it's the best roster since Deadly Alliance.
Still, not including Rain, Tanya, Fujin and Bo' Rai Cho from the start was a big misstep. If I had my way, I would have cut Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana, and Jacqui in favour of those four... but if I had my way, there wouldn't be guest characters either, so lots would be different.

7.5
Bo Rai Cho, Tremor and Tanya added some spice and flare to the roster. And this is coming from someone who doesn't see the hype with Tanya and was annoyed by Tremor being acknowledged as anything more than forgettable canon fodder in a shitty spin off game.
And don't take the low rating as me disliking the new characters or anything. The only new character who didn't land for me was Erron Black.
The roster just felt flat because it lacked many of the more diverse, outrageous characters from MK's past. Yeah we had a bug lady, we had Reptile and some people had Goro but...really that's as interesting as it gets. And then there is the lack of interesting character design and visual flare and yeah everyone and everything just felt flat.

Nice to see Tremor in a proper MK game, and of course to see Bo' back. Aside from that I couldn't care less about the DLC characters, and Leatherface really does seem to be scraping the barrel. Who the hell asked for him? Who's going to buy him? Seeing as KP2 confirmed the two guests trend, I'm glad there won't be a KP3. It's just a shame people buy these guests, as sadly it means we'll get more in future MK (and Injustice) games.
As for the default roster... too safe, and should have included Fujin and Rain. Reiko would have been a great choice of DLC.
6/10 overall, but thanks to the variation system I am able to find people I enjoy playing as.

I'd give the roster 8/10 as it currently stands. A fair amount of my favourites made it in but I'm confused about the lack of Fujin, Reiko, Kai etc... Would have been their time to shine.

No Havik after building him up in the Comic was a let down.
Also the Shao Kahn teases threw out the game but no way to play as him takes a point away for me
9/10 Still the greatest fighting game ever made!

What? Are you saying you didn't like that they took a interesting character like Havik, and had Quan Chi step on his head? *GASP!* But why? What gripes could you possibly have with the treatment he received?! O_O

Initial roster 6/10
Final roster 5/10
The initial roster seemed so bland and boring to me and the absence of both my favourites noob and smoke was inexcusable how neither of them made the game is beyond me they left out smoke in favour of the likes of jax and Kano? The worst starting roster for me since MK3
And then the DLC......... Where do I begin after being so disappointed with the initial roster I thought here we go 8 DLC charcaters will surely make things right.........nope we get 4 stupid guests, tanya (who should've been a starter) bo rai cho (top 3 worst characters ever) and two made up charcaters triborg and tremor (who I honestly don't mind but not when so many other good real charcaters missed out)
So for me this game was the best MK graphics, gameplay and story wise but the second worst roster I have ever played

9/10 easy. Easy. Sure Fujin, Reiko, and Noob would have been great, but what we do have is excellent.
MKX has the best batch of new characters since MK2. Erron Black, Takeda, Kung Jin, Kotal Kahn, Cassie Cage, and Dvorah are all great characters that elevate the idea of what MK is and can be. So while I may not be able to play as those characters I was hoping for, I got more than five brand new characters that I like just as much as any of those missing.
I also believe that you can't have a conversation about the quality of the roster without considering the effect of the Variation system. The quality of a fighting game's roster cannot be judged based on a list of names alone. It's equally important how the characters included play and effect the way that matches play out. Just watch a competent match between a Grandmaster SubZero and a Cryomancer SubZero. In any other game these would be two entirely different characters, one spacing and traps-based and the other a rushdown and pressure character.
With that said, the Variation system probably wasn't used to it's fullest potential for every character in the game, but even then we got to see characters we've played for years trying new things and not relying on the same moveset they've had for decades. The degree of nuance and sophistication within the roster's available playstyles is a tough thing for any future fighting game to trump.
Now, as far as how the roster fits the game's narrative, to be completely honest, it's all but a non-issue for me. I've never once played Street Fighter or Killer Instinct etc. and considered that game's narrative when playing matches. Outside of one mode in the game (story mode) the plot has little bearing on matchups, gameplay, etc. Then you have the fighting game trope of "What If" characters/skins that I really like. I love having characters like Evil Ryu and Oni. And I love the fact that NRS included the aged human skins for Kung Lao and Liu Kang, even they had nothing to do with the game's plot.
So yeah, the roster is a 9/10 easy, and probably the best overall since MK2.

7/10 before DLC
9/10 After DLC
Would have been 10/10 but no Fujin or Kobra. Everyone else is cool mostly expect Jin and Kotal (better in comics). Predator is my favorite to play as followed by Scorpion and Erron Black.
