Nothing at all other than the fact that Reiko would wear Kahn's mask, not that Kotal Kahn is wearing Shao Kahn's mask. It was just a shot in the dark.

They could explain it that Kahn's mask had God-like powers though and when Reiko put it on after Kahn died, it turned him into that (Kotal Kahn).

Just a way to make his MK4 ending more legit and not make it seem like Reiko just has an unhealthy obsession with wearing Shao Kahn's mask.

I really don't think Kotal is Shao's son. It's been mentioned by a dev that he may be an Elder god that is related to Shao. He could even be Shao's father.
