Ok, so i've had this idea for a wile and i think this is the best place to express it. Ever since about the time MKD came out i thought it would be cool if Midway took the technology used to make the live action look of first three games into the 3-D fighting style we see in today's MK's. I'm sure it would take a butt load of work to pull off, and who knows maybe it's just not possible, but how cool would it be to have that classic live action look that started it all in a 3-D fighting game.

Any opinions?

It wouldn't. At least I don't think it would. It sounds physically impossible.

Unless there's a way to take a photo of all sides and angles of a 3D object at the same time in one shot (which of course, there isn't).

Very difficult. The closest u can probably get is taking a complete view of the characters in real life then skinning them into the models into the game. You can then animate the models by the computer but that is not the way that will give the old feel. The animations that would give the true feel would be extremely difficult to do because it would require you to make an individual image for each movement the character makes from all sides then reskin the model again. Too tedious and it probably wont look very good.. You cannot get the exact feel since it is in 3d. would be best to just skin from real life and put on computer generated models with their own animation. Hope this clears thing up

Stupid shattered dreams... oh well it was fun wile it lasted.

I'm not all computer inclined so it was and idea. I kinda thought if they could do something similar to how they did those bullet time shots in The Matrix but those were all still shots compiled into basicly an animation.

The idea of using photorealistic texture maps would be worth a shot but the results could be unstable i agree. It's funny how no one mentioned motion capture animation though. That would give any fighting game a lot of life and weight to it.

i think that is what they tryed to do with war gods and they failed because
war gods was called a bad game by everyone ,I was probably one of the few people who enjoyed playing but only because i used to pure 2D.
if this were done in 3D mk it would be a huge risk.

A way I thought of reinventing Mortal Kombat is having the camera located behind the player so and be able to move in all directions. That way it would be fairly easy to have more than one opponent on screen at a time. Imagine a 4-player Mortal Kombat game and each player fights in rounds like battle royals. If a player defeats another one he has the chance to perform a fatality, but another player who is still in the game could steal that chance from another character and spare a players life or he can be cruel and steal the other player's fatality.
To get the realistic look of the old games, using 2D images would be impossible.

It would look very fake because the lights and shadows would never move realistically.

To have the realistic look in 3D, they would have to take photographs of real people to use as texture maps on a 3D model. If they can do it by hand, then that's another option.

I think they can do it for the PS3.

Uhhh... they DID use photorealistic look for a 3D Mortal Kombat game already. It was called MK4 ..............and it looked like like shit.

I don't need photo realism, but I would like to see a large step away from the glistening, plastic looking characters MK:DA and MK:D. I'd like to see characters that look more realistic due to insanely high polygon counts, a huge amount of detail on faces, hair and clothing etc. Look at a few Xbox 360 screenshots like the up close pic of Rasheed Wallace sweating in NBA 2006 or any of the alien pics from Gears of War. Heck, look at Project Gotham Racing 3 from the beta kit graphics. Backgrounds should look that realistic.

More realistic looking characters and backgrounds can be achieved for MK, and I'm hoping the MK team will take full advantage of the PS3/Xbox360/Revolution graphical power and get away from the cartoon look. I'm hoping for scary realism, where fatalities make your jaw drop like they once did long ago. I want in game graphics that look better than the opening cinemas from MK:DA and MK:D. I want detail: Individual strands of hair, facial wrinkles and crows feet around the eyes of older fighters, clothing that flows smoothly with several colors. Lastly, I want special moves done on a larger scale. I want moves that harnass the power of these beast systems. Fast moves, fast specials etc etc etc. Now I'm just getting off topic. It's hard not to when listing what you want out of MK.

They were very limited with that they could do in MK4.

It's not just slapping a picture of a person on a very low polygon model.

In the next Gen systems they can put the texture maps on much higher polygon characters + they have normal mapping which makes low polygon models look like very high polygon models.

Think Doom 3 but better.

Plus all the special shaders for rendering makes a big difference on how realistic the models look.

Have you seen the demonstration Sony did at E3 for the PS3?
They had a video at Gamespot. It might still be up.
