im going to have to go with MK9...
i just feel this story was to compact, no sub plots or motives...
weak character development on some characters...
i liked the story of mkx but didnt love it... it kind of got away from the mk feel... it felt to much like INJUSTICE...
and human scorpian is NEVER a good idea...
lol but just my opinion... what are your thoughts guys?
mk9 or mkx story mode? which do you prefer and why?

MKX all day!
MK9 was basically the same story, but with minor tweaks. I mean of course I wished MKX's story was a bit longer, but man there were some really good "oh shit" moments in the story.
Also all the NPC's made it even better.

MK9, but I have to admit it's due to nostalgia probably. MK9 hands down would have been better if I didn't feel the ending was rushed or the shock value deaths. They could've left MK1-3 the same but just made the sequels take a different route.

MK9 for the story but MKX for the cutscenes.

I think I prefer the MKX story. MK9 whilst changed up felt familiar and heard it all before. Plus the cutscenes in MKX are beyond glorious.
Dat Sonya chapter!!

Its hard to say, but MK9 is always going to hold a special place for being the first time we got a really great story mode. There was something really special about seeing the story we've all known for years finally shown with beautiful cutscenes, like the intros from other games but for the whole story.
I personally really liked MKX but it seemed short. And when you think about the present day timeline, without the backstory scenes, it was a lot shorter. I especially didn't like the Sub-Zero chapter, how you basically just fought everybody one after the other. I don't remember how long it took to beat MK9 but it definitely seemed longer.

I did find myself loving the Cage family, normally I hate Johnny and Sonya but Cassie seems to be a perfect blend of the two.

MKX I feel like did a way better job making the fighters feel like actual characters instead of plot devices. Especially for the special forces characters and even Sub-Zero.
MK9 was running through the trilogy plot, with some modifications. A fun exercise, but I never felt like I was really getting to know the characters.

MKX.
MK9 was good, but it was a rehashing of MK 1-3 with a twist.
MKX was great. Not perfect, I felt like chapters could have been longer (Would have loved Scorpion and Quan Chi to have their moment more towards the story's climax for example, and I think Sub Zero deserved more meat on his story.) But I also felt like it was a very good tale. And the quotes from the beginning that resurfaced at the end gave me the warm fuzzies. (You/She called me Johnny.)

MKX. Easy.

I liked both stories, but both had their flaws.
MK9 was longer and the whole re-imagining of the MK 1 - 3 storyline was much needed, since the entire series has been based on speculation and piecing together whether character endings were canon or not. There were also very few loose ends to tie up, and the surprises, twists and turns on character fates caused by Raiden's interference were always jaw dropping.
MKX - the voice acting was tremendously better, the cut scenes much better and the darker, grittier tone of MKX versus the cartoonish look of MK9 was superior. However, the story of MKX left WAY too many loose ends and unanswered questions. It also didn't seem to have much of a clear direction, and the jumping around in the timeline was inconsistent. For example, the Netherrealm war took place 2 years after MK9, then it immediately jumps ahead 20 years and we're sitting with Cassie, Jaqui and the others. Then multiple flashbacks in the story all go to about "5 years earlier" and they still seem like they're at least 18 years old...the timeline is heavily inconsistent.
Also, tremendous disappointment to find out that the MKX comic has absolutely nothing to do with the MKX game - it's not a tie-in at all. And some of the plot elements of the comic would've made for a great story in MKX.

MK X is better than MK 9 in every way. The story was shorter yes but more was accomplished in this one aside from Liu and the other dead heroes. I'm just happy Scorpion FINALLY gets his revenge. Did it fuck things up? Sure but it needed to happen so we may finally get some character development. The story mode is also a better presentation in this game. The quick time events helped the fun for me as well. It was annoying like many games that utilize it.

I completely agree.

MKX. The voice acting, the cut scenes, every was much more well rounded and better.
It had it's faults, sure. I would have loved a six hour story mode complete with like 20 chapters, but hey, what we got was fine.
Only things I didn't like were some characters felt like after thoughts to the story and some stuff felt unfinished..
Like, where the fuck did Fujin go in all this? He was there in the prologue but then a new Shinnok conflict arises and he just vanishes? Come on.
And why have Ferra/Torr on the roster if they aren't going to be important to the story at all? Annoyed me.
Any while I am nitpicking, the story just ended without showing what happened with Sub Zero sending Kotal back to Outworld. What happened with Kotal? That just felt unexplored.
But ultimately, I loved it. Really well done aside from those things. Human Scorpion ALLLLLLL day son.

Did they ever explain the rise and fall of Kotal Khan?
And what was the point of introducing Ferra/Torr because they didn't have anything to do with the story.

This. I am suprized at how many people in this thread support mkx's story. The gameplay is superb, but I'm struggling to keep from calling the story garbage.
