Now, I won't be mentioning any particular member's name, nor would I want the same from others who reply, but it appears as if there is a certain caste of members here who receive some people's lack of erudition in the field of MK lore rather negatively, i.e. retort to such messages with an apparent air of tactlessness and intolerance, and (albeit in somewhat rarer cases) derision.

A brief illustration: back in 2007, when I still was a fresh member, a "newbie" on MKO, a made a thread in which I happened to state, among other things, that Mileena is a Tarkatan. The guy who was the first to respond corrected me by mentioning Mileena is a mix between Edenian and Tarkatan essence, added "lol" to his statement, and, generally, wrote his whole reply in a, well, shall I say - tad disrespectful style. While, truth be told, there were no direct insults in his reply, I couldn't help noticing signs of indignation in the manner in which he retorted; as if the dude meant "you dare writing on this forum not knowing a fact as substantial as what Mileena is?! You mofo!"

I then turned myself to revising and digesting bios of practically all classic kombatants, feeling sincerely guilty for playing MK for more than decade without getting interested into the theoretical area of the game.

But, even though the two above paragraphs are about my resentment, the topic is NOT about me. Mine was only the case necessary to illustrate what is generally happening - I'd say, more and more - in the forum. I noticed a number of members, mostly recent, whose comments got backlashed for their "ignorance" about characters' bios or traits, or MK story as a whole. I think those who criticize are actually really rude, and, while I do commend their own academic dedication to MK, I also think they are doing a great disservice to the new members who came here as genuine enthusiasts and, probably, long-time players of MK - the two traits which, more or less, all of us here share. Love for MK is not about competing who knows more about MK; hell, I wouldn't even say it has to do with how good a player you are. Love for MK is just that - enthusiasm about playing and sharing your thoughts, EVEN if they may occasionally be incorrect, of the gameplay, story, design,...

I tried my best not to add any sentiments in the topic, my apologies if it inadvertently (!) happened to sound so.

Those were my five cents.

The sort of thing you're talking about is not necessarily specific to Mortal Kombat or fandom, it's just true of life in general that you should never phrase your sentences to sound like you're dead certain about something if you don't actually know for sure what you're talking about.

For instance, instead of "Mileena is a Tarkatan", someone who's never read or can't remember her bio should perhaps word it instead as "Isn't Mileena Tarkatan?" or "I think Mileena's Tarkatan."

Imagine walking down the street, seeing a car in the distance, too far away to ID the make and model, and going to your friend "That car is a Ford! I can tell from here."

If you walk up to it and the damn thing turns out to be a Chevy, well now you'd look like a fool, wouldn't you?
To know things and be humble about it is good. To not know things and be humble about it, also good. Nobody can fault you for having a pleasant attitude and being willing to ask questions.
To know things and be arrogant about it...well, that makes you a prick (and I'm willing to admit, I am this kind of prick. I used to be a lot nicer but years and years of certain things has a way of wearing down a man's patience for other people)...but at least you're a prick who's right. No one can accuse you of lying or being an idiot.
But to be overconfident or arrogant about shit you're not even sure of, that's just the worst. No one wants to talk to a person who acts like a know-it-all but is always wrong.
And it might not be fair, but unfortunately, people have a habit of assuming that's what a newbie is going to behave like all the time if they do it once or twice by mistake, because like the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Being a fan implies that you like something, you are a fan of something. As long as it brings happiness, content etc. to you, you ARE a fan. What others think of you , what level of immersion you are willing to go into the subject etc. are not what define your attachment to the material.

There is no difference between someone who has superficial knowledge of MK or those who drill in to the lore aspect to the smallest detail as long as they share the same outcome: being content with doing, reading, playing what they like.

You can be a fan a Counterstrike without being in knoweldge that the first shot of the 1/5/1 always hits the middle of the crosshair in 1.7. Again, level of immersion does not warrant anything at all.

And second: what others think of you is purely the last thing you and your hobby should be concerned with.

... I honestly can't say I know more than ten character's stories in this game, because they just don't interest me. But, I've been playing this series since I was five years old, and I think that makes me a life long fan.

That said, people who consider themselves "hard core" fans(of anything), are the rudest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. smile ... Unless they agree with you in some strange cosmic alignment type shindig.

How about paying attention to the blasted topic title and give your opinion about it, rather than make senseless digressions and play an uninvited patronizer? Would be, you know, kinda more respectful.

you know this is a funny thread, i consider myself an mk fan, first time i played was in 1992 mk1 on snes, spent lots of quarters on mk 2 and 3, got both games for snes, got mk4 for ps1, got mkda for ps2, started reading this site when it was mk5.org, bought the mkda guide book, got mk deception, got my niece into it, by this time a lot of people disliked the series all my friends said " it sux now" but i stayed loyal to it, got me an xbox 360 just to play mk vs dc, played hundreds of hours, got my name on the leaderboard, own all mk games except special forces, shaolin monks and mythologies, saw the mk9 trailer summer of 2010, almost shit my pants when i viewed it, it had 409 views, saw it a week later,it had 900,552 views, and finally got mk9 for ps3. i may not memorize all stories or endings, but i have spent huge part of my life with this franchise and always will no matter what, im a fan because of the fun it is, stories are fun but you dont have to notice every detail to be a fan, i could care less if kitana has blue eyes or if cyrax looks like a jamaican dude, i also own both mk movies, i went to the world premiere in 95, the place went apeshit crazy when the mk song hit, also created a 30 track music cd with tracks from the games and the movie,if i could get a tattoo of mk i'd do it too, im mk 4 life.

Yes, you do and the reason for this is because the only thing being a fan means and requires is liking a particular game, book, movie, store, hobby etc.. There is nothing else required to be a fan.

i consider myself a fan because i stuck with this franchise since game one when i was younger.

i think this kind of question is looking for trouble because for someone like me who dosent know every little detail about the mk mythology then get called not a true fan basicly makes me wanna take my size 15 shoe and shove it up your ass.

and no offence but who the hell is anyone to tell me im not a true fan in the first place?
