Why does Johnny Cage always make you want to puke?
I know the title sounds inflammatory, but my question is real. Over the years, it has generally been the case that Johnny Cage has not been appealing to the eye.
For example:
and
are rather revolting. One has an ugly face, the other a so-so face and an absurd body.
You will find this in pretty much all of the games. They almost never get a good face and even when they did get his body right back in the day because of the way they created the characters (like this great one here: http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/games/mkt/johnnycage/bio.gif ), Cage has never been as attractive as most of the females or even Kano and Jax. This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that he's supposed to be a movie star.
Compare his fugly appearance in the games to the movies and especially the new web series. I mean, look at this guy:
Now THAT is what a Johnny Cage should look like. *Drool*

I agree, I never found Cage attractive... but is that truly a requirement for you to like a character? Do you have to find the character atractive before you like it?
Cage serves his purpose as the humourous character. He's not supposed to be the "sexy hot guy", though I'm sure there's some who find him attractive.

No, I don't have to find a character attractive before I like it. For example, my favorite back in the MKII arcade days was Baraka (though I rarely used him when playing against other real people for obvious reasons). He's certainly not a looker.
And sure, Cage is there for humor, but he's still supposed to be a star. He's obviously ugly when compared to someone like Matt Mullins, but even if you compare him to a real life star with so-so looks like Van Damme*, he falls far short. (*I am, of course, referring to when he was younger. Jean Claude has not aged well and even "so-so" would be much too generous today.)

Well, what about Linden Ashby, who played Cage in the movie? I thought he had a great look about him.
Ashby was pretty good, I agree, but that falls under the movie category.(Which sort of reinforces the point. When actors are picked to represent Cage on screen, attractive men like Mullins and Ashby are selected.) The only time Cage ever looked good in an actual game was in Mortal Kombat Trilogy. How hard can it be to make a character who is supposed to be a star with tons of movies under his belt look like someone who would actually make it in Hollywood?

Well, Daniel Pesina didn't look too bad. I mean, he was a martial artist, and in small scale (during gameplay), he actually captured that Van Damme look pretty well.
He looked okay in MK4 too, apart from the game's actual graphical flaws.

About Me
Look, now Baraka has grown hair and beard! Shit, the time does fly...

If it were for the looks, there would seriously barely be a pack of fighters whom I like. Hell, I'm even selective regarding the female ones (e.g. neither Mileena nor Sonya are hot to me (yes, you're hearing that from a straight guy)).
Now DESIGN is a totally different matter. Quan Chi may be ugly in face, but his makeup and clothes never fail to captivate.
Precisely.

Finding one attractive is completely personal..
I cannot even bother to look at Megan Fox, for example. She is bland as Brand X.x.x.x.x.

Are we attempting to compare the attractiveness of a computer generated image to that of a real human?
This is stupid.

I never thought the idea of the character was to look great, but to think he's greater than he is.
Besides, do people really go to see action stars in movies because of how they look? Stallone and Arnold have faces like cliffs, and they've had successful careers.
