Okay, so I've played several hundred matches online... Allow me to sum up 99% of the experience below.

I pick Sheeva. They pick Scorpion/Smoke/Ermac (or less often Noob/Sektor/Kung Lao) They try and spam teleports and basic combos. I hilariously smash their faces in and they disconnect in frustration.

In several hundred matches, I have not seen one Sonya, Jax, Kano, Liu Kang, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, Reptile, Sindel, Cyber Sub-Zero, Jade, Sheeva, or Cyrax. Not a single one.

One of the reasons I picked Sheeva, Quan Chi, Jade, and Sindel as my mains is because I see so few people online using them. I've come to loathe Scorpion for the sole reason that he dominates 90% of the online experience, denying me fresh and exciting new faces and players to face off against. And I know there are several Scorpion players here.... and that's great you like him... but online made me want to prove a few things.

I seriously rock with Sheeva, and I challenge anyone who claims she is a bad fighter. I can dish out massive damage with Quan Chi, more so than with any other character. I can tag-team with Sindel and Jade better than any other combo.

And this is important for two reasons:

1) With online dominated by Scorpions and Smokes, I've quickly learned how to defend, counter, and punish nearly every single one of their moves. Nothing in their repertoire can hurt me unless I slip up or fail to execute the right move. Every time someone picks Scorpion, I laugh to myself... and typically win rather handily.

2) By picking an "unpopular" or rarely seen fighter like Sheeva, Quan Chi, or Baraka, your opponent has very limited (or zero) experience playing against a high-level player, having grown accustomed to fighting the same set of fighters most people play as. But suddenly that all changes when moves and combos you are unfamiliar with start hammering you and you don't know an effective way to counter (yet), and because so few people use these characters, you never adapt and learn to familiarize yourself against them. Thus, rarely seen fighters' lack of exposure prevents others from adapting and growing accustomed to fighting them.

I'd like to know if anyone else has made a conscious effort to pick some of MK's least popular and underrepresented characters to play as online. Perhaps because you just like them? Perhaps because you want a challenge? Perhaps because you want to prove that these characters are as good as any Scorpion or Smoke? Perhaps you're just sick of fighting, or playing as, the same generic ninjas over and over?

So, give it up for the No-Shows of MK. Tell me which characters you rarely (if ever) face online, and if you're doing something to even the playing field.

I have to say i agree with everything you have said here. I too picked my mains for the simple reason that i feel they are underrepresented. Now i have seen one liu kang, a kabal (a bad one at that), and a stryker recently, but most fights are with scorpion or noob. I picked as my mains Sonya, Nightwolf, and Johnny Cage (still need to get better with Johnny cage i have learned, but he still will be a main of mine). Most of my matches using Sonya and Nightwolf, i have dominated for exactly that reason. Im not big time caliber player, but most players just seem flustered when i pick them, thus giving me the element of surprise. I surprised that more people have not picked Sonya or Nightwolf at least, because their juggles are good, and both can juggle straight into an xray, which if im not mistaken is not breakable which gives me even more options.

I use the entire roster online (i main mileena kitana and jade), i learn a BnB combo for each character memorize it and go to town. And yes its far easier to win with the underused people. Like mileena! clowns dont block low. ;)

Yep, exactly the same for me and I alternate between Jade and Sindel and they act like I'm cheating when I use Jade's projectile invulnerability or the ex version. They also act like they've never seen Sindel's front cartwheel kick because I can do it at the start of almost every match and they never try to block it.

I main Cage and Sonya and am trying to get better with Jade as she is surprisingly fun to play.

I'm getting a bit tired of seeing all the Scorpions, but when someone picks him, I have the same feeling as Garlador: This will be cake. And I have met few Scorpion players who can beat me, which is not because I'm very good, but because I can dream Scorpion's moves despite only having played him in the three matches in story mode.

That's awesome that you're representing Sheeva Garlador as I was considering maining her up myself once I'm able to get online. I've got some technical questions I'm tempted to ask you but it might be better to just hit you up with a PM so as not to de-rail this thread. I'm definitely curious about Block Strings, teleport punishers, and Sheeva BnB combos/mix up options. It seems like Sheeva has some nice options out of her low throw but not a lot of low mix-ups to condition the opponent to block low.

On topic though, is Mileena seen online much? I've taken a liking to her playstyle as well.

I so agree with the OP. Im sick of fighting lame Ermac. Scorpion, Smoke and Sektor. Why do people want to win so CHEAPLY? My tag team is Jade and Stryker, and I pick them, Johnny Cage and Kano online. Power to the unused!

i originally decided to main subzero, not cus i'm a subbie fanboy (which i'm not) but because i could easily pull off a 30% damage combo, but after seeing how many people used sub online i decided to learn a character that i had not encountered ONCE and that was shang tsung, i started working on him and i actually got pretty good with him, but of course i then got the red ring of death so i'll have to wait for it to be repaired before i can get really good with him :P

I'm just sick of fighting Scorpion, Noob, and Smoke. Those are the most selected once I pick Kitana.

idk anything about the people you have faced online but i can say this. Any character can be good/bad depending on the person playing as them...now before this game came out one of my friends would joke around because my 2 favorite characters were always scorpion and ermac(in general due toi the brutality of their play styles). He would joke saying "everyone plays scorpion the same. spear over and over".....now i thought he was exaggerating until i actually played this game online. i was honestly disgusted by the fact that his joke was an under exaggeration..i have literally flawless victory'd every scorpion i have come across cause they all use spear as their primary. So, similarly to the OP, i have mastered the art of using scorpion without primarily using his spear(meh.,.i didnt really use it very often to begin with)...odds are only one or two times per fight...if even that.
oh and also, one of my mains is cyber sub zero..for some reason i can play beastly with him, even though im like the worst of the worst when i play the regular sub zero.

I play with Scorpion every now and then when I face a Scorpyscrub.

I main:
Kung Lao(I guess he's used often)
Cyrax(even though I'm that good with him)
Smoke(I'm sick of Smokes online, ironically. They literally just teleport spam n smoke bomb spam when I get up)
Sonya(I've fought 1 sonya online)
Mileena( I expected other Mileenas online to spam the teleport kick, but I was proven wrong :] They're not that good, though...)
I tried to play with Sheeva, but she's impossible to use online for me... .____.
Liu Kang(I haven't fought ONE Liu Kang...)

And that's all for me. I haven't fought a Cyber Sub, Quan Chi, Sektor, Liu yet.

I pick my mains for the same reason I have always picked mains in every fighting game since I was a kid.

I only use characters I find cool. I could be the best player ever with Sheeva, but I will refuse to use her consistently because of how much I dislike her.
I struggle to be good with Shang, but I continue to use him regardless.

However, I used to use Ermac a bunch but the barrage of Ermacs online has turned me off a bit.

so maybe people like to use their favourites?
i use mainly ermac, kung lao, then reptile and sektor. but i like to rotate between most of the roster.

although, admittedly, i fucking HATE people who pick scorpion/kratos/noob/raiden/smoke over and over and OVER *claws out eyeballs*

That might be because Kano is awesome, and one of the coolest MK charactes (for his own reasons)

Agreed .... the game is still new, so, pretty normal if overall, there is not much love for the underrated characters. Once the game has more time passed, I'm pretty sure people will discover new ways to play with Sheeva, Quan Chi and others that are not so used for now.

You can punish merciless these amount of Scorpion and Smoke players, once you learn how to block in time, and timing pretty good a counter-attack.

Sheeva is pretty good if you can use well her teleport, stomp and anti-air grabbing move. Sure she lacks a bit on speed area, but she is far for being totally defenseless ..... you might have to putt more heart and effort using her instead of easier characters, but, I'm pretty sure sooner or later some advance tips with her will appear in Youtube videos.

Hopefully you're PS3 players, even though that my state has yet gotten PSN to work, I will gladly face you with characters you hardly see.

As I got more time to play now, I've found that Cyber Sub-Zero fucking rocks.... So yeah, once PSN is up in my state, I will be gladly to face all of you using characters that you hardly see.

I wish I had a way to record some Sheeva videos and upload them. I've seriously become insanely good with her and can pretty much mix-up or punish nearly any attack from any direction and counter with routine 30+ damage easy combos. I've only seen a few Sheeva vids for her, and while not bad, I'm a bit happy I've outclassed those techniques already and learned several of my own.

But I think the fact Sheeva is so rarely seen online makes fighting with her a tad easier, since nobody is aware of the nuances of her move set or how to effectively counter her yet.

Go right ahead and send me a message. I'd love to see more people give Sheeva a try.

And to answer your question, I've only seen TWO Mileena's online. One was terrible, and the other was amazing. Mileena has some crazy mix-ups, is highly unpredictable and fast, and pretty much can chain anything in her repertoire. I'm legitimately shocked more people don't use her online, because she seems very high-tier and very fun to use.

I'm currently maining Sub-Zero and Smoke. I go back and forth but I think that Subby has greater mix up potiential, even if he is slower.

Online, I see mostly Scorpions, Ermacs, and Raidens. Raiden is particularly cheap. Anyway, I've seen very few SubZeros and often enjoy freeze cloning noobs who's only method of mobility is jumping. You can just walk ya know. lol Cornucopias of Ragequits.

But yeah, those three are everywhere online.

I agree completely, Sheeva and Baraka have really come through for me in online matches. I've only seen Sheeva used once by someone other than me and I've seen Baraka used zero times and I played quite a bit the past two days.

I use everyone though, but I usually roll with Stryker, Ermac, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Mileena, and Jax. I also don't see much of Jax or Mileena surprisingly.

I agree from the perspective that since with those characters that aren't often fought against the play style is kinda unknown, however fighting against a Kano is no more difficult to me then fighting against a Scorpion. The concept of lesser played characters being good is just something that hasn't been explored. I don't know if Jax is a better character then Ermac, I have no experience with him.
