I once heard someone call fighting games "strategy games with a manual dexterity requirement."

I like that description.

That description is pretty damn perfect. That's what makes fighting games so great. It's like a game of chess, only it actually takes skill to move the pieces from square to square and you have small time windows to do so, and if you're bad enough, you may possibly NEVER get a turn to make a move.

And just to add to what Aris's beard said....

NRS don't know how to fix the " Netcode " ( Cheapest servers they could get ) Either.

But they say they SLIGHTLY improved it ( Bullshit )... They didn't do a fuckin thing! Buncha fuckin puppet clowns.

Bottom line, WB got there money already.

Don't worry bad hair haters and gay Smoke fans, They'll still sell you DLC.

If they suck so bad, why don't you just join every tournament and take all the free money? They suck, so clearly you should have no problem doing so.

I love the new MK, and I love NRS. I wanted to get that out of the way.

Now, two things:
1) I think NRS is doing the best they can. They obviously put a lot of work into this, the game has been very well received, and they continue to promise full-support for the game.

2) Their heart is in the right place, but not their head. NRS has prided itself on being very, very secretive, rarely, if every, being forthcoming with their fans about what they're doing and why they're doing it.

I would very much like NRS to stop that and to be more open and transparent with their fanbase. I loved the game, but was there any reason, at all, to keep over 50% of the cast hidden until just before launch? Any reason at all not to be shouting about all the features and modes in the game for months on end? Any reason not to show the hardcore players amazing videos of what Stryker, Smoke, Kitana, and so many others could do? Any reason at all not to show off all those renders and concepts for the characters until AFTER the game was released?

NRS has a habit of talking AT us and not TO us. There is not an on-going discussion with them between the fanbase and the creators. They do something, send it out, and wait to see how we respond. They don't actively ask us ahead of time what sort of things we're interested in, what info we want, what changes the whole community craves, what add-ons we'd prefer, and when they do it's shrouded in secrecy, red herrings, or sometimes outright exaggerations or lies (360 demo is coming! We promise! We won't charge for on-disc DLC! We promise!)

Boon DID ask us which characters we wanted for DLC.... out of a thin pool of characters. I didn't see him saying he was open to the likes of Sareena or Li Mei or Reiko or any character not on that "list" that THEY decided instead of us, the fans.

But that was at least a step in the right direction... aside from the fact that, well, that was the last we really heard about "that list". That shouldn't just be it. If a developer asks us a question, gets our feedback, they should respond and get us excited long before a half-hearted reveal for a character months later. It should be an ON GOING discussion between the players and the developers if they honestly hope to make changes that we, both casual and hardcore fans, would appreciate and accept.

Right now, it feels entirely too one-way. I do love NRS, but their openness with their fans needs work. They pride themselves too much on being "secretive" when, in the age of the internet, secrets are, honestly, worthless. But if you build a community, talk with your fans, then both developer and community grow.

Look at any Valve website for their games; they are actively involved in talking with their players and fans. They have debates WITH them. They ask them their preferences on additions and ideas. It's an on-going dialogue between fans and developers, and the fans continue to invest themselves because they feel it's not just "Valve's" games, it's THEIR games too.

This is NRS's games. It's not my game, or your game. I feel like I have little say over the final product or the changes that will be made to it. That's not necessarily a BAD thing (too much fan involvement dilutes the brand), but there is no harm in at least being receptive to discussions.

The official Mortal Kombat site is a joke. No community. No rapport. No feedback or updates or discussions. I doubt a single developer frequents the site more than once a week, if that. Twitter seems to be a better alternative... but why just Twitter?

If MK is to be taken seriously as a competitive fighter, I will say it needs to do MORE than be a competent fighting game. That's right; it just can't be good. It has to excel. It has to draw the players in and invest their time with them. They're slowly starting to lower their shields and let the egg shells crack around them, but it's not there yet. Fair or not, we need more people like Tom Brady yelling at NRS to pay attention to them if they know what they're talking about.

And I definitely want NRS to start being more open and transparent with us. I want to know what's going to happen to my favorite franchise, and keeping me in the dark has NEVER made me happier than if they'd been upfront with any intel or info they had.

So, that's my take on this.

Great post, Garlador.

Take notes, NRS. If you thought withholding information that I'm able to find out without five minutes of opening the game's box is a good idea, well now you know it's not.

I'm grateful you kept most of the cast unlocked. You're not doing everything wrong. But come one, get the conversation going. The lights and curtains need to go!

The PDP tournament? So when the Kabal player Michaelangelo got you stuck his in block stun infinite, you were just planning on using your internal sorcery to break out of it and body him?

I don't think you realize... you know what, nevermind. Let us both go on with our night.

Idiot. How dare you insult my honor?

Does it suck that MK has broken shit in it? Yes. Does it suck that MK has broken shit in it and this is the middle of tournament season. Yes. But, TB and Aris sounding off against the game like it gave their kids aids at the same time they've paid money and personal time to go to places and play knowing full what what awaits them is fucking stupid. Nobody is making them register for tournaments, and the other hundred guys in the tournament are not making whiny rants about how fucked up the game is.

Whining about how long it takes for a patch to come out, the lack of release dates, or because you didn't get any goddamned renders during development is neither productive, relevant or even remotely intelligent.

If MK9 is doomed to fucking die a horrible broken death like its predecessors, then put down the controller and let it fucking die. Don't climb on some "I care about the game" high horse and take pot shots at the developers over shit you have no experience and no understanding of.

Grow up and find out what it takes to actually make a sucessful video game or stfu and go play one of those "properly" balanced games like Phoenix vs Capcom 3 and Yun Fighter 4..

You know what would have happened if they just stayed home and not suffered the broken shit? PDP and the other tournaments would have been left to scrubs, and the tournament scene would have failed to launch. These guys care about the scene, and NRS didn't do their part by testing the game properly.

You're literally asking the scene to stop growing at the most pivotal time in it's cycle.

Fenix Wrote:

Nonsense.

Willing players weren't allowed to test half the cast out at conventions because NRS didn't want us to know Sheeva or Smoke were in the game. That's horseshit, it's needless, and no one benefits from that.

It's not all passive either: they took away Smoke's OTG for no damn reason. Who's really running the show here? Some of us don't want to live in a scrub democracy. You know why Kung Lao nerfs were top priority for the patch? Whining. THAT'S what whining does. It's gets the wheel moving. If you don't like it, you don't have to read it or listen to it.

If we don't whine, then MK10 will have a shitty training mode (again), the system of control configuration changing will suck (again), and the netcode will still be worthless.

SF4 came out in 2008 and it has a more competent netcode. There's no excuse for this shit.

I love this scene, where the first time a game enters a tournament, if it's not FLAWLESS, the scene is destroyed. We have Marvel vs Capcom 2, Super Street Fighter 4, and Marvel vs Capcom 3 in the scene. God knows how many things have been wrong with those games in the past. HELL, things are still wrong with both MvC2 and MvC3! And GOD KNOWS, MvC3 isn't getting another patch until SMvC3 comes out, and it fucking will!

But a studio that's been under the ground comes out and makes a game, and what happens? "I DON'T THINK THEY'RE CAPABLE OF HANDLING THIS!!! OH MY GOD! LET'S SCREAM AT THEM MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE!" Which brings me to this:

Nonsense.

Willing players weren't allowed to test half the cast out at conventions because NRS didn't want us to know Sheeva or Smoke were in the game. That's horseshit, it's needless, and no one benefits from that.

And you know what? That's fine! Complain about Kung Lao! Complain about Training Mode! Complain about Block Stun! Complain about those to your heart's content! Because majority of them need to be fixed!

Compare that to the tears of blood that is being had here! "NRS IS COMPLETELY INCAPABLE BECAUSE THEY WON'T CATER TO 'THE SCENE'"! Do you realize how revolting that is? That a company, that's not all that powerful at the moment, is spending their own money to ATTEMPT to fix half the issues with this game, and you're going to get those problems solved....for free? It's a slap in the face!

And you know what drives me nuts? People will say this sort of shit to Capcom. And how will Capcom respond? BARELY. God knows, MvC3 fans have been waiting on content, and what's going on the MvC3 twitter? "Post your best assists and we'll post them on Twitter!" Seriously! That game has been out for twice the amount of time Mortal Kombat has, and how is THAT game doing?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2p1LOCQBNE

I'll admit that NRS hasn't been the swiftest or best performer here. But they've actually treated us with SOME respect. They've responded to us. They've communicated with us. They haven't shunned or ignored us! They've tweeeted about how they are looking into things!

The game isn't ready for tournament play, and for some reason, this makes the company the most irredeemable piece of shit all of sudden? It's this game of 'BUT WHAT ABOUT ME!?! WHERE ARE MY BENEFITS!?!' If we're going to attack NRS with such fangs, then we do not deserve such luxury.

I'm sorry that the MK Tournament is going to be ruined. I'm sorry that NRS ruined it for you. I'm sorry that NRS failed to WORK hard enough so you can enjoy your GAME.

I don't see how. If you truly believe that this game is not going to redeem itself in your eyes, leave.

If you go into this game with faith of redemption but NRS fails you, then NRS wasted your time. If you go into this game with NO FAITH but STICK WITH IT until NRS fails, YOU wasted your time.

First off Temp is right and Fenix is wrong. Straight up.

Fenix if you don't take this game serious and if you just want to 'have a little fun' then more power to you, absolutely nothing wrong with that. BUT WHY THE FUCK WOULD IT EVEN MATTER TO YOU IF THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT THE GAME AND WANT TO IMPROVE IT?!? Just sit back and wait for dlc and play some laggy online matches on the side or go through a shit storyline over and over, or whatever the fuck it is you like about this "flawless" game. And as far as Temp's mildly offensive response upsetting your great honor, since when are you a fucking samurai? If anything is wrong with Temp's response is that he's too soft on you, you're a moron arguing against somebody being passionate about something because you're not passion about it also. Do you picket against breast cancer support rallies because you don't have tits?!

Which brings me to my next point, aside from you just dropping in to add your .02 cents, is your whole fuckin argument really formed on the basis of, "Wow Tom Brady takes it too seriously." I CANNOT believe people argue against the Tom Brady side of this debate because he"cares too much and needs to calm down." He made an angry phone call; he didn't kidnap Boon's children. And for a guy who's poured so much of his time into promoting this game by trying to increase its tournament scene and writing guides for each character (that are ten times better than the shit guide that was made by the developers) he DOES have something to lose here since all his energy would go to waste. Not to mention he's fuckin sponsored to play the game. And furthermore NRS promised and advertised a tournament level game and its agonizing to see how close they came to hitting that mark to just suddenly drop the ball now. They have one month before their greatest chance to promote this game and get more people playing it. MK does not have the best track record and here is their chance to prove that it is a competent fighting game so more people take it serious.

Speaking for myself here, I can only play MK online. There is ZERO tournament scene for this game in the Northwest, none of my friends that are into video games give a shit about MK, people don't touch this game at the bar/arcade's near me (assuming they even bother to carry it), and online is broken as fuck. On top of that, I am not even a tournament level player by any means. So what does Tom Brady calling out NRS on their failure to follow through with their promises and calling them lazy mean to me? It is one step towards the direction of MK's fanbase pressuring the developers to actually follow through with their promises and make a game that doesn't feel like a cop out. This is the first MK to REALLY advance the series by miles and do you really wanna watch them fall off now? Wouldn't it be cool to see MK get the same following as a game like SFIV? If you answer no, then you have nothing to lose and your argument is a fart in the wind.

And I know you'll hit me back with a "MK fans expect perfection and whine and bitch if they don't get their definition of it," but before you do, since you admit this game has flaws, how do you think they're going to be fixed in this game or the next? How can we go about voicing our concerns about MK? And finally, why the fuck do you think MK included bio's for every character after MKA? Because people were so grateful with the nothing they got?

You see, this is what's wrong with your entire argument. You realize this, and yet this is the fault of everything else.

I'm not saying they shouldn't fix any of the issues. They should. But like you said, this is the first real advance for the series AND THE COMPANY!

If we're going to complain to their doorstep about the issues with this game, fine. But if we're going to their doorstep to scream about how much they fail to deliver for us, why the fuck should they do anything for us?

This is their newest project. This is a growing company that has entered shallow water, and their working their way to the big leagues.

Personally, I DO want this and the future MK games to reach SF4 status. I really do. And working with them by showing them what's wrong with the game is efficient, as long as we buy the game and show our support.

However, maybe I'm wrong, but screaming at how they can't accomplish anything, when they are actually working on it and not neglecting us like many other companies do, I feel like we're going to scare them out of the SF4 status and we're going to have another downhill slope for the MK series, yet again.

What? This is the same team that's been making MK for years and years. Except now, instead of being backed by Midway, a midlist publisher if ever there was one, they're working for one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world. The "They're just starting out" defense doesn't apply here.

While it is the same team, the team has never been this knee deep in the modern expectations of fighting games. Fighting games are bigger than ever right now, and they have to keep up. While the past MK games can be considered good or bad by anyone, this is their first REAL step in modern tournament fighting games.

"Hardcore"/"MLG" gamers make me sick. All they care about is winning and when they can't win they complain. Somethings are justified but this guy is just being a dickhea

you forgot to include that a vast majority of MLG gamers/ "high level players" actually suck at the games they're playing :)

LMAO this is the absolute truth, they really do suck ass. Thats why i can only take a few tourny ppl (tom being one of them) serious.

And yea NRS is fucking up but the problem is tourny ppl think theyre the majority when we all know most ppl who buy games dont give a fuck about tournies at all. If this game fails in the tournament area you think the sales will too? Hell no, mk is way to fun. There is alot to be fixed but the thing is, when sf has all this stupid stuff, they say its depth, but as soon as its found in mk "OH MAN THATS BROKEN GAME SUXOR!!!".

Tired of this boring cycle with pplsleep

No it's not.

When it comes to tournaments, people are trying to make money. They're trying to get sponsorships so they can travel to competitions without ridiculously high expenses. They're trying to make the game successful on a higher level so electronic sports can be seen as viable entertainment by the greater media.

To say that "it's just a game" is the same as saying "it's okay for MK to be shitty because it's really not all that important." I don't believe that. Something tells me that you don't believe that either.

TestType01 is right about the patches; I think Brady got a little carried away with that aspect, but next time NRS, dump the stupid outdated secrecy and TEST THE GAME PROPERLY!!!!

Tournaments for money? Why don't they just go to college and get a fucking job?

I am completely confused now. The same community who were ready to lynch up NRS because Kitana's hair did not seem 100% realistic and So-and-so's alt costume is the wrong colour are now DEFENDING them because "it is perfectly reasonable for the gameplay to be broken and for NRS to take their sweet-ass time fixing it"???

"The game can remain a lauging stock at tournaments, as long as my favourite character is portarayed nicely in story mode." This is the message and idiotic mentallity the majority of people on here share. What a bunch of stupid kids.
