They're really really cool and I understand they take a lot of practice to master, but the thing is once you use this one character over and over again it isn't that tough to pull one of these combos off.

It's a bit of a whiner topic I know, but is anyone else a little frustrated a match starts into a huge block fest? You're blocking trying to not get super combo'd, they're blocking waiting for that perfect timing when you let go of block to try and attack so they can take half your health away.

I played Mileena vs Ermac. Ermac sat there blocking, and I was trying to creep on him.. I got in close, and immediately he got that choke in at just the right time though I was trying to be unpredictable. and there goes like half my health... so now even if he decided to not do another 50% combo I'm still at a huge disadvantage.

Anyway it's my whine fest, was wondering how you guys felt about it

Just hate.

I leave the controller alone when someone start huge combos against me.

There is no fun in that.

Normally I only do a typical 3 or 4 hit combo but i dont spam that over and over.

It depends on how the other person fights. Last day i was fighting a Sonya who would no nothing but stay on the other side of the screen block ducking, until you tried to get close and punish. So i began spaming until her got close and punish. But it really isnt fun. The same happened today against Raiden, wich is far more dangerous with the teleport and torpedo. But well, there is always a way to punish them.

there actually isn't a way to 'punish' them if they pull it off.
And to pull a 40+% combo isn't like it takes a miracle to get off either. Mortal Kombat is turning more into a waiting game than a fighting game.

Welcome to a fighting game! This is how things work on a competitive level. It's like a game of chess -- you wait for your opponent to make a mistake and then you strike. If you make a mistake, then you feel the pain. You need to learn to apply pressure while at the same time remaining aware of what your opponent can deal out to you.

If you do not like playing against people who can pull these combos off, I suggest sticking to playing your next door neighbor who shares the same thoughts as you. If you want to play online or against people on the tourney scene (and by no way am i comparing the online scene to the offline tourney scene) you need to learn how to compete.

I dont wana come off the wrong way, but I play to win.

Practice and learn your own 40+ combos.

Its part of the game. I wouldn't have it any other way.

First level players will not string anything together. a combo here, specials more than anything. Uppercuts and sweeps.

Second level players make small strings (1,1,1, spear) then end it rather fast with an uppercut or something.

Third level players go beyond that. Studying exactly whats open after certain strings of attacks. and improving. Spending hours in practice or even experimenting in vs.

If you attack unsafely with a move that can be juggled from if blocked by a level three player, then expect a beating. Its like playing a really fast game of chess. Your defense is more important than offense. There even has to be defense in your offense.

If you don't have that, then you shouldnt really fight people with good records.

I understand you being stressed but ThePunisher1 is right. For once in ten years we got a competitive game.

Btw yeah you're right Mileena is really tricky to play sometimes.

Ermac players are so predictable! They ALWAYS block and wait to use a special...what I do: I main Mileena. At the beginning of the game I back away to a certain distance (in which her ground roll just stops in front of your opponent). That move is veeery punisheable so obviously Ermac players will get cocky and use a move on me thinking I would get aggressive or thinking they blocked the roll and I'm open. But right when it stops in front of them I block, they make their stupid predictable move and BAM! :P It;s just a matter of getting used to what your opponent does

coming from a guy who who isn't very good at most fighting games,
I am so happy with my ability to do a 40+ combo with nightwolf, quan chi, raiden and reptile. What I like about how they promoted mk9, is that theres an emphasis on comboing your own way. And it really feels like that when practicing. I don't need to look at strategy guides or online f.a.q's to play around and find a starting point to combo around with.

Thanks for the snarkey response. I guess I'll just start playing Ermac. His 40+ are really easy to pull off anyway I do them all the time in the practice mode I just found they they really cheapen the game. Scorpion is hella easy too.

Are we complaining about 40% combos now? I mean fuck. That is the point! You pick and main and you try and master him to provide the best chance for victory. Why doesn't the Mortal Kombat community get this? This is how it works in every fighting game scene.

I think that 40% is a bit too much. Maybe 40% if it included an X-Ray.

The thing I dislike about high combos, is the imbalance between characters. Take Liu Kang for example. All he has to do is something like 312 dash 312 dash 312. Some character have VERY easy ways to get such high numbers, while other characters really have to work for their bread.

Now it doesn't matter if we were all pro players, because a difficult combo will feel like an easy one at that level. But we're not... and if you decide to play a more difficult character, you're immediately at a disadvantage if your opponent picks an easier character. For example: my friend plays Liu Kang and always does the same easy combo. He even admitted to playing him because he's that easy. He used to be a Smoke player, but Liu Kang outdamages Smoke with less effort, and that's why he switched.

But I guess that's inherent to fighting games, the fact that it's almost impossible to balance each character. But even with that said, MK sure has some very lame-o characters... and that's why they get played with the most. tongue

40+combos are the only reason I play MK. Besides the love for the story and characters and nostalgia. If this new MK had noob combos, I'd still be playing BlazBlue. I absolutely adore this combo system, Calculative and technical. It's far better then I even imagined prior to release, And.... There are combo breakers that require no skill at all to pull off so, No reason to worry. Accompanied by the fact that each move scales down throughout the combo, It's quite fair.

But it is really a heartwarming feeling when you make someone use their breaker with a basic combo, Only to save your meter for after that, And unleash the wrath.

Tag is the best for this, Especially with Jades tag assist. Had some one quit on me the other day mid combo. Immediately after they missed their naked x-ray attempt, I started the lockdown loop with Kitana using Jades tag assist from quarter screen. Used all three bars for three loops all the way to the corner, Then proceeded to link that into a lil custom corner combo I made up with my girls. I was on 28 hits out of the 72% 29 hit combo when... Match ended.

The funniest part about this is...

After only about 12 hits into my EX loop, This person had built up 2 bars for a breaker. Guess they were waiting to throw another naked x-ray.

I didn't get the win, And I wasn't using Sonya but....

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

some characters have AHA! /grin moments when you pull off big combos...others make you feel cheap (COUGH KUNG LAO COUGH). But i could talk about how Kung lao's spin is broken all day (ok not talk but bitch).

I understand your point man, feels pretty shitty sometimes just sitting there watching my character get tossed around like a rag doll. HOWEVER you gotta admit, huge Goliath combo's are cool as shit to see and when you learn some of your own it feels so ballin to pull them off against people.

Its kinda surprising how rewarding a game like MK can make you feel sometimes. Like i spent days and days in training mode learning a upper 40's to 50 percent combo with Cyrax, WITHOUT the bomb trap might i add, and it feels awesome to pull that beast off online.
