Hey great post man, and I too am a big fan of Resident Evil.
I wanted to respectfully point out a huge flaw to your list of most used MK9 characters. You decided to make the list based on their rank for each platform, which is a reasonable method to find out who the most played characters were in MK9.
However, the issue with this list is that MK9 was played almost twice as much with the PS3 than the XBOX 360. MK9 (PC) was not played nearly as much as the other systems. So what I'm getting at is that the ranks for the XBOX and PC are not as strong as the PS3 ranks.
For example, Sonya Blade ranked higher in the XBOX and PC than Kitana. Kitana on the other hand ranked higher than Sonya Blade in the PS3. If you combine the numbers for all three platforms (PS3, 360, PC), you will find out that Kitana was actually played more than Sonya Blade by around 500,000,000.
So a more accurate list would combine all the numbers from the 3 different platforms. But....
To make things simple, you can just rely on the PS3 list since MK9 was played with this system significantly more than with the 360 & PC. Thus, it is more reliable.
1. Scorpion
2. Subzero
3. Raiden
4. Liu Kang
5. Johnny Cage
6. Cyrax
7. Smoke
8. Kitana
9. Kung Lao
10. Noob Saibot
So based on this list we can predict that the top 5 most played characters in MKX could be:
1. Scorpion
2. Subzero
3. Raiden
4. Johnny Cage
5. Kitana
Of course this list might not be the case at all depending on how popular the other MKX characters are. Also how accessible and important they are to the MKX story, such as Cassie Cage, Kotal Kahn and Mileena.
Kung Lao also seems to be a character that will be very popular and could easily end up in the top 5 most played in MKX.

I can definitely see these 5 characters ranking the highest, but I would focus mainly on the character itself instead of focusing in a specific variation, because that adds a third variable that makes this speculation even more difficult.

I think naturally (and as has been stated), it will differ by platform. My guess for Top 10:
1. Scorpion (-_-)
2. Sub-Zero (-_o)
3. Ermac
4. Kotal Khan
5. Johnny Cage
6. Sonya
7. Cassie
8. Kitana
9. Erron Black (assuming he's a heavy, easy-for-casuals zoner)
10. Raiden OR Kung Lao
Mildly popular characters will likely include Kano (grappling variation + zoning variation will make him more popular this time), Shinnok, Liu Kang (if he's in), and Quan Chi. There'll be D'Vorahs occasionally as well.
Unfortunately, I do agree with those who believe Ferra/Torr will be left in the dust in ranking despite being so original. Shame. I would definitely pick them, but from what I've seen, their style won't vibe with me enough to use them online.

I almost did a sum of all characters through all platforms but I decided not to because of the time it would take.
I used the Xbox 360 as main because thats were I played the game for the first time.

I hope my little breakdown made you see why using that method is problematic, and a more reliable list would be from the PS3 stats since MK9 was played significantly more with the PS3 worldwide.

It's funny because I had this massive (over 10 pages) debate with another member on here (Queve) regarding Kitana and Sonya's popularity years ago. I actually used these stats during that argument so I am very familiar with them. For that reason, I thought I would clear up a few things regarding the top 10 most used characters in MK9.
During that debate Kitana fans united as well as Sonya fans on the opposite side, and the debate turned into a quarrel
Which I do not want to see again hahaha
Anyways, regarding the most used characters in MKX, it is very difficult to predict because we haven't even seen all of the characters.
I do not dare to predict the top 10 because its pretty much impossible, but I'll go ahead and predict the top 5 which is safer.

4. Johnny Cage
5. Kitana / Kung Lao
