IGN Posts Mortal Kombat 8 Comments From Ed Boon!

IGN Wii has posted yet another sit down with Mortal Kombat series creator, Ed Boon. This time, the focus is on the future of the Mortal Kombat series as IGN Wii questions Boon about the next game in the series, following MK Armageddon. In this brief posting, Boon mentions the future of Mortal Kombat's storyline and also it's gameplay mechanics, while confirming there will indeed be a continuation to the series after MK Armageddon:

"On the next game, we're going to start new, with a bunch of brand new characters, a whole new fighting system, a new presentation with the new graphics for the new consoles, as well as a new control scheme to take advantage of some of the new technology available. We thought it was a good time to close this chapter and open a new one with every single aspect of Mortal Kombat -- It's going to be brand new."

IGN also hints that there will be more information about MK Armageddon posted tomorrow, so stay tuned for that development. To read the complete update on the site, click here.

Official MK Unchained Site Launches!

Following closely behind the full launch of the Mortal Kombat: Armageddon site, the PSP exclusive Mortal Kombat: Unchained also has been given a new appearance and a small amount of new content. There are now menues similar to the ones from its sister site, including a video archive, arena list and character list.

Much of this was known information, as the videos displayed are currently the previously viewed trailers and the character list is as expected, a 30 character lineup with four exclusives. However, the arena list gives incite into exactly which arenas will be returning from Mortal Kombat: Deception. On the list are the following 18 arenas:

  • Acid Bath
  • Beetle Lair
  • Chamber of Artifacts
  • Dark Prison
  • Dragon King's Temple
  • Dragon Mountain
  • Golden Desert
  • Hell's Foundry
  • Kuatan Palace
  • Lower Mines
  • Living Forest
  • Nethership Interior
  • Nexus
  • Quan Chi's Fortress
  • Sky Temple
  • Slaughterhouse
  • The Falling Cliffs
  • Yin Yang Island

Unlike most features, a few arenas seem to have been excluded from this game. These include Liu Kang's Tomb and the classic remakes of the Dead Pool, Courtyard and Portal. Strangely, the Acid Bath (an arena not seen since Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance) is listed here as well.

Cinder Posts Kitana and Shao Kahn Fight Video From MK: Armageddon!

After a weekend hiatus, Cinder of the Midway Boards has posted yet another fight video from the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. This particular video features another long-standing MK rivalry, as it features Kitana facing off against her adoptive father, Shao Kahn, in the High Tower arena. This is yet another very short video, coming in at right around eight seconds; the main highlight of this video is a demonstration of the stage's level-change trap, where the unlucky victim (in this case, Shao Kahn) gets knocked down a long staircase. This sequence is virtually identical to the staircase trap in the Wastelands stage.

IGN Posts Ed Boon Wii-Related Interview!

IGN Wii has posted a transcript from a brief encounter with Mortal Kombat series co-creator, Ed Boon! In this new interview, Ed discusses the upcoming Nintendo Wii version of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, which is currently scheduled to be released in early 2007 at an undisclosed exact date. It is hinted that MKA will be using the Wiimote to control the gameplay, and it seems the game's mechanics will be somewhat altered to fit the next generation console's strengths.

IGN Wii: How you would like to work the control mechanics in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon for Wii?

Ed Boon: I have a number of ideas that we are going to try out, but don't think we are at the point in development where we can talk about the details of how the control scheme is going to work. Our primary goal is to make the controls responsive, intuitive and novel. It wouldn't make sense to us not to offer a new gaming experience with such a dramatic new control mechanism.

Also touched upon in this interview is the possibility of classic MK games becoming playable on the Wii, as well as Ed's personal thoughts on the system itself.

IGN Wii: A major selling point of Nintendo's new Wii platform is its Virtual Console, which enables users to connect online and download -- for a price -- classic games from Nintendo and third parties. What are your thoughts about bringing over classic MK games to the Virtual Console?

Ed Boon: I would love to see that happen!
