okay, so i have this memory from when i was a kid around 6-7 of walkin into wal-mart(or some store) mind you this is when MK1 just came out on home consoles. and they had a SNES hooked up with mortal kombat to play with 2 controllers also, anywho i was walking toward this big crowd of people around 10-15 people.wondering what was up. and thats when i realized(SP?) that they where waiting there turn to play mortal kombat, the way they had it set-up was winner stays and plays the next person.. well it was finally my turn i was going up against this guy that won alot. nedless to say i got my ass handed to me. But i got right back in-line. I WAS HOOKED. and the guy was kind enough to tell me how to do scorpions, and Subby's Fatalitys... so after my parents where done in wal-mart i begged them to go to the Little Ceasers down the street. where they had Mk1 for the arcade, ate some pizza and spent my allowance on MK1.. god the memories... here's a odd little fact about that pizza place, they still had the MK1 machine up untill 2005.. and i use to go play it every so often.
those where the days where you could be new at playing a fighting game. and not have the VETS laugh you out of the Arcades... they actually gave you tips on how to be better.... well enough of my post... whats some of your memories from when MK was BIG....
on a side note there is this arcade in a small town about 15mins away from me that has UMK3 still, and i go there atleast 2times a month to play it.

Yes, please tell us where this UMK3 machine is. I am building a map of known MK arcade machines to make it easier for people to find them.
It's always annoying when people laugh new folks off the game. Everyone is new at some point. My favorite MK memory is nice and fresh, my first tourny on arcade sticks, ECC XI, which just occured this year. Some great matches, great trash talking, and great shows of tactics and abilities. Can't wait for the next UMK3 tourny, at NEC in Philly in December.
Long live competitive MK.

Keep an eye out for any local tournaments. Seriously, there is no gaming experience like it. However much fun the fighting games are when you are alone or with a couple of friends, it's increased drastically when you are in a crowd reacting to the game as it happens.
And if its tourny like NEC, then its a chill tourny. People are there to have a good time, and to win some matches. You can't beat it.

it's right next to the putt-putt place, by the big slide... is all i can say i dont really know the address but just use the putt-putt one.. but i just called them, and they said that they may be only open in the summer from now on. (that would seriously suck, where will i get my UMK3 fix). but if your down here in the summer. it's a nice place to go and play it. no-one is ever there and you can chill and play alone or have a blast with a couple of friends. on a side note, i just watched some of those tourney vids, i would get my ass kicked. im not that good. i just casually play becuase there are never any tourneys or anything around. i just play for fun.

I remember playing my first MK game, MK4, on the arcade when I was seven. Sonya was the first character I selected. I was quite confused when I saw the Choose your Destiny towers (I had no clue what was going on lol) and I chose Master 2 by aciddent...
;;
I also remember playing MK1 with Sub-Zero and remember performing the infamous head rip fatality. I was amazed and impressed as well...

ahhh memories.
Just last year i went to Virginia Beach to a local arcade with a few friends just to mess around.
UMK3 machine ahead.
6 guys crowded around it and all playing.
One of the guys had this really nasty cyrax and the other was using stryker at a medium based level.
I was like hey u guys wonna play.
I was young compared to them as they were 20-25 years old.
The guy that was good with cyrax wanted to play me.
Since i only use Kabal,Ermac,Smoke, and Scorpion i was like hey cool.
1st round i got 1 flawless with Kabal. i barley won the 2nd round.
Then i moved on to the other 5 fellas and wiped them out with my unstopable roster
.
Not the most exiting story but o well. all i can say is
Kabal's a beast

Sept 13th 93....
I remember it rainin and me and my sister Lisa went to our bus stop for school. I didnt wanna go in cos I knew my Dad was buyin MK for me whilst I was at school.
The bus stop was packed full of ppl and the driver wouldnt let us all on so for some reason [to this day i dont know why we did this!] me and Lisa walked to my Uncle Phil's who lived not far away, we woke him up and stayed there for a bit, then we went home and my Dad came over [he didnt live with us]
Anyway he let us have the day off and took me into town, I remember him grimacin at the £49.99 price tag [oh the memories!] and tht nite I remember flickin thru a computer mag [cant remember which!] and it had the fatalities on the inner cover so I was practisin them all nite...
I then remember comin home to be told my dog, Jazz, had died. Enraged I remember takin my anger out on MK1

I was in Las Vegas and they had MK1 at the Circus Circus Hotel. It was the hugest arcade machine I have still ever seen. There were stairs to get to a platform to play at. The screen was a projector screen and there were chains between the coontroller area and the screen so no one would walk in front of it. Someone was playing as sub against goro and there was a big crowd watching. It was $1 per game. I waited forever in line, lost in a millisecond and just watched the most realistic fighting game I had ever seen. Since then I have never liked the corny Asian cartoon fighting games.

I remeber back when I was six, I went to a restraunt that had a MKII machine. My mom wouldn't let me play it, so I had to watch my dad play. He made it up to Reptile, but Reptile kept on turning invisible and jumping behind him, and finally pulling off a long ass combo on him. I'm planning on going back there and play it if they still have it.
Here's another: I went over to my dads friends house, I got bored so they put in MKT. I was kicking butt with either Ermac, Scorpion, or Sub-Zero, until my dad started playing. He picked Motaro and made up to Raiden. Then he started to lose. It was funny.

Yet another excellent tactic by the MK Team. Build the fanbase young. They're a lot more impressionable by violence and gore at that age!
MK is like the cigarette of fighting games.

One problem I've always had with that is the movies were aimed at that same 13-15 year old market, meaning we didn't get to see what made MK popular at the time (lots of blood, gore and Fatalities!) showcased in their entirety in the films.
Though they tried somewhat succefully to be creative with it in the first film...

I remember when MK II came out in the arcades. Family used to go to the bowling alley to bowl, but in my case I just went to the arcade. I remember watching this guy play MK II, just the regular mode, and he got up to Kintaro and gave me the controls. Of course I lost out of the fact that I was nervous. I laugh at that to this day because MK II is easy!
Also, when MK II hit the SNES I was amongst the many that were pumped reading the news that the SNES version was gonna have the blood and guts. That was huge! I remember reserving the game at Blockbuster and keeping it for weeks playing friends at home. Great times.
My cousin had the Genesis version of the game, poor guy. We still used to play it all the time. Just great times.
