I once heard a rumor that Smoke watched Scorpion use the harpoon in his battle with Sub-Zero I, and adopted it afterward.


But that's just fanchatter. I think it's because of lazyness on someone's part.

They wanted another ninja. And the Spear and Teleport are more general abilities, less character specific than the freeze or acid spit or something. Those moves tend to go with just a specific character.

Almost every secret character has had at least 1 of Scorp's moves. It's a standard they use for some reason. It's a pretty generic "ninja" move. It's simply a rope dart. It's not as character unique as some of the other characters' moves. *Edit: Plus, the spear move is Boon's favorite move, Scorpion is his favorite character.


Story wise, it could be that it's one of the stolen Lin Kuei arts.

In the MK story, the Shirai Ryu ninja clan was founded by an ex-Lin Kuei member nammed Takeda. He fled the Lin Kuei, and started his own clan in his native Japan, using the secrets he took with him from the Lin Kuei. His clan was the first ninja clan. Note, the Lin Kuei are nit ninjas.

Actually, the REAL answer is....Smoke is just Scorpian, but Grey. He has the same specials and combos as Scorpian.

And he is Lin Kuei.

Except when H.Smoke has better combos and can move faster, like in UMK3.

i think that they just wanted to use up memory but didnt have as much time as they thought they did so they just added 2 secret characters.

The added characters use up very little memory since every single frame of animation for palette swapped characters is accessible at any time, in any palette color. The only differences are their programming.

Human Smoke and Scorpion are completely different characters.

Smoke just likes to jack moves from people (especialy in sprite comics, YOINK!) Seriously though before MKD most of his moves were the same as other characters.

Because it would be cool looking, cheap and quick & easy to program. That ish ow they came up with pretty much everything about the 2D MK hidden characters.

The list of characters to use the "harpoon" (kunai on a rope) that I can think of is as follows:
