Ermac isn't really a "mercenary" for Shao Kahn. Ermac was basically created by the souls of deceased warriors. Shao Kahn used his powers to control these souls for his own evil purposes, thus controlling Ermac's mind. Although Ermac wears a "ninja" costume, he is NOT associated with the Lin Kuei. The only MK characters from around the time of MK1-MK:DA that were/are in the Lin Kuei are the Sub-Zero brothers, Smoke, Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost. As for Rain, that bio of him once being in the Lin Kuei was not meant to be. And as for Scorpion, he is from the Shirai Ryu, enemy group of the Lin Kuei.

Ermac doesn't have a long history. He was created by Shao Kahn. He was made up of souls of many fallen warriors.

Basically, Shao Kahn created him from the souls of dead warriors (somewhere I read that it was 3 dead warriors, but I may be wrong) as a slave to fight in his evil army. After Kahn's defeat, when Kenshi wandered Outworld, he encountered Ermac, and sympathized with him as both had been manipulated. Ermac taught Kenshi his tele-slam.
Ermac doesn't really have a very deep story, mainly cuz he was just made for UMK3 as an easy new character manipulating the ninja sprite, just like Rain, Chameleon and Khameleon, plus ninja Sub-0.

He was an accident, a glitch in MK1 and now we must put up with a red ninja with "Telekinetic powers!" Oh what fun I will have with this crap palette swap. Thank Midway for taking him out.
