Before you read this turn on your PS2, Xbox, or GC and watch the intro to MKDA. Then come back here and read the rest and comment... Or feel free to read on.
Ok here is the answer to the riddle of how to open the Portal Sphere, including who you needs to be defeated... your "most powerful adversary!"
Like it or not... Shao Khan! Dundundun! Yes Shao Khan. I didn't say this is acheivable in the game, but it's right in front of our faces.
I had my Ps2 running as I was posting here earlier and the beginning movie played. The DA kills Shao Khan... The DA goes through the portal. Also, the 'Portal Story' says that "to earn the right to pass, however, one must defeat a representation of his or her most powerful adversary."
And who did they just defeat? Shao Khan, who Raiden also mentioned that he is one of the two that could prevent them from total domination of the two realms.
So there you have it! This made very good sense after I thought about it for a second. This has to be one of the more obvious answers to an MK question that it seems everyone has just looked over.

You can't go through the portal in the game, i also believe that shao kahn would be the strongest or worst adversary, but kahn isn't in the game, so there is no going through the portal...

All I said was I know how to go through it... I never said you can go through it in the game.
For those still looking for a secret, I would like to see another secret just about as much as any of yous guys. I'm trying to help narrow down the search and just think it should be looked for elsewhere now.
Plus, it's possible that you actually go through the portal everytime you play the game, you just don't see it. Because you do fight in both Earth-realm and Outworld right?
The other "adversaries" you guys mentioned, I know it spoke of them during konquest but was it in direct reference to the portal stage? It may have (I really didn't read everything), but I think that could just be stating the facts on who their rival is.
Hsu Hao is just the person who a group of people on the boards here are having problems with.

Fighting your adversary is just 1 (ONE) of the methods. It says you have to 'FIRST' defeat your most powerful adversary. And no, it is not Shao Kahn!
In the intro, Shang and Quan travelled through the portal not because they fought Kahn. They fought EACH OTHER!!!
You will discover this piece of info by playing Konquest. And please, don't tell us you know "how to go through the portal" when you obviously don't!
Like Morpheus said in the matrix: "There's a difference between knowing the path......and walking the path".

Sadly, I can't quite remember them at the top of my head right now (sorry). But most of them involve the deadly alliance.
Shang Tsung vs Quan Chi
Quan Chi vs Quan chi
These are 2 of them. Got this from playing Konquest.
I think another one is Sonya vs Mavado

I know the path, just can't walk it due to limitations of the game. Or rather, not a limitation it was just not included.
Haven't you noticed that there are a lot of hints to things in the game that aren't there? But hey, we still got a great game with cool extras... It's just missing the extra extras.
By all means, please enjoy trying to figure out another way to get through the portal! And, if you find a way to do it, tell me. I won't apologize, but I will accept I was wrong...
But till then this seems to be the best answer.

Ok, what I think is:
- You defeat your greatest adversary in the portal stage.
- Switch to Fatality stance and do a button combination. Make sure that you're right under the sphere, because that's where Shang & Quan were when they got transported in the opening movie sequence.
- You'll get taken to somewhere to play something. (Probably Space Invaders I think, or to the Senate of the Elder gods to fight Noob Saibot, remember he is a spy sent by the gods).

wait did it say that you had to be at the portal stage then fight ure advirsary then go threough ?
OR
fight your advirsary some where else then u can go through?

Info in the krypt said you had to "first defeat a representation of your most powerful adversary".
Other info says thatto separate 2 realms, one had to shatter the portal sphere. I don't know how releveant this part of the riddle is, but I think it could be a farce. Have beaten my adversary (using Shang or Quan), and nothing happens. Tried all kinds of techniques, double flawless, 3 rounds, fatality, NOTHING! Again, it could all be nothing, just like how they named the arena "acid bath" and no such thing happens at the end of the round.
