I finally got MAT2 here in Germany via a UK Import (MK2 and 3 are forbidden by the state here).
First, I own a MK2 Arcade Machine and played it probably 200 hours, then I played MK2 on MAME maybe 1000 matches so I know how it fells right.
I have the PS2 version of MAT2 I dont know if its better on GC or XBOX.
Most people here are complaining about the no random select and no Smoke fight case.
But for me the biggest shit specially in MK2 is that the game simply doesnt run smooth like the Original one.
You can see it very good if you make a jump forward, the animation doesnt look smooth, it looks more like a frameskip.
I am 100% sure than on the PS2 there is a frameskip in MK2 and MK3, all the timing critical moves like roundhousekick counter Baraka,s jumpkick ect. are much harder or simply different to perform than on MAME or the Arcade.
I think its about 2-3 frameskip in MK2 and maybe 1-2 framskip on MK3.
Just jump forward and you see its not a smooth animation like it is on MAME or Arcade.
Of course you can play it good even with that framskip but its not the true timing like in the Arcade and even not like MAME on a good PC.

Nice Review. I own the arcade version of MK II too. First off nothing is gonna beat the arcade versions but these versions in MAT 2 are top notch. I am especially pleased with MK 3.
MK II is a great version of the arcade for those not willing or unable to afford an arcade machine. For basically a dollar you can play MK II arcade. Good deal to me. Frameskips? I don't think most people will notice that unless you have the arcade. I really haven't paid much attention to it when I play MK II on MAT 2. Its the MK II I remember for the most part. No battle against smoke though. Noob and Jade are still there though.
For a dollar you get the arcade with a few tiny setbacks. Its a great deal to me :)
I just hope Midway releases a Midway Arcade Treasures 3 and includes Ultimate MK 3 and MK 4. And I don't want to wait another year for it.

The shadows really bother you that much? I hardly notice them while playing.

The shadow flickering really only happens during jumping, it can be distracting. I played a friend's copy the other day, overall the gameplay is pretty solid, MK3 is faster than the arcade, it's more like playing Trilogy. The real problems are with the athstetics and I can see MK fans complaining about that. MK2 seemed pretty good, MK3 sounds are disappointing.
Overall I would give them a B+ on their collective MK emulation, not bad, could be better, the whole MAT2 as a whole is worth the $20 or whatever it was, but the fact that the MKs are not 100% is still crap since they were the selling point.

I can't believe someone made a serious review on MAT2 without bashing it because of petty minor details... holy cow it must be Christmas.
It was predictable that the games wouldn't feel 100% like the Arcade, only a fool would think that in the first place... Anyway the highlight in MAT2 to me is still Championship Sprint, which I'm led to believe I'm probably the greatest player in the history of mankind (or not)

All i know is that these MK translations are decent, and also that if they wouldn't have marketed it "arcade perfect", people wouldn't get so upset over it. I personally think that getting upset over it as it is, seems a little overboard, but since they said "arcade perfect" then i can understand. I like the game, and my all time fav is mk2 and it turned out to be the better of the two which makes me happy.
Now if they meant "arcade perfect" as in, its the actual rom files emulated, and not a port, then i guess it would hold true. But not everyone will think that way, so perhaps they should have been more clear. I am satsfied with the 20 bucks i spent. i paid a dollar a game for 20 games. So its actually pretty decent.

Regardless of counter bitching, the bottom line is they didn't do as good a job as was humanly possible.

The thing is, I have MK2 Arcade for real and I see and feel that it,s not even a smooth framerate on PS2 (Dont count things like no Random Select and no Smoke).
I dont bitch about the price, its ok, it would be even ok if there is no MK game at all thats not my point.
I agree that MK2,3 on MAT2 are the the closest to the Arcade ones wich are official.
But they arent Arcade perfect, and I know that MAME is closer than MAT2 wich is a blame for Midway because the MAME guys dont want money for it and they dont made the Mk,s but they made the best emulation of Arcade Perfect Version,s of MK,s.
So they actually made a better Emulation than the Original creator,s.
(I know that another company made MAT2 but Midway simply should have more overwatched there actions).
And please dont forget I am talking about the PS2 Version, I dont know if its better on GC or XBOX.

Framerates on my xbox run perfect. I've played both, and its the xbox version with the least problems. MK2 except for the standard issues of the start button , and the shadows once in a while, is a pretty good translation. I myself own an MK3 machine along with MK1 and 2 boards as well. Its a Midway dedicated cab. So I know the arcade, and xbox is the closest. Though still not "arcade perfect"
