I think 2-D was way better, and i think most of the people who started liking MK at the first and second games will agree, but thoses who liked it at Deadly A and Deception.................... They might think 2_d sucks. 2-D games are the heart and soul of Mortal Kombat. They are the best because they stated the godness of MK. They should never be underestimated.

The newer MK's the last 3 are 3D a lot more then MK4 is.In fact, it's not even 3D.It's 3D like graphics but the gameplay is full 2D, that ss button is like a dodge rather then actual 3D play like the last 3 MK's.

And yes the last 3 MK's ARE 3D, despite what some say.You can actually side step in them unlike MK4.

I mean, it might not be "tekken" 3D but honestly I don't care, I love MK and nothing else.Well, the old SF's were cool, but MK and SF are all I do.

In MK:A, the jumping mechanic is more of a 2D feel, the sidestepping is 3D however.

Anyway, for the topic.I feel that the older ones are better, however if I was asked which is the best newer MK, the best 3D MK/newest MK game is no doubt MK:A.I play these games online A LOT, trust me it's much better and more playable then the previous two MK's.MK:DA and MK:D.The only way to get OTG's in MK:A is by air cancelling and beleive me online with "lag" playing a role it's not happening. It might happen here and there if you're playing someone with a connection like yours or almost equal, but as all here who play online knows. That scenario rarely happens.

But my favorite MK games are UMK3, MK:A then the rest after those.

I'll play any and all MK games though being the obsessive fan that I am.

I think it would be cool if midway made an offshoot MK game that was 2D again. I would like to see how they could make a digitized live actor 2D with todays technology, that would be so awesome. 2D fighters are not dead! just because theres 3D fighters now doesnt mean they should be treating 2D as a primitive type of video game that should no longer be made. think of 2D fighters and 3D fighters almost as 2 different game genres.

oh, and 2D fighters are better, cant say why, I just like them better due to its simplicity. plus I like the nostalgia associated with it.

I defeniently agree with you because just cause every fighting game (except for street fighter) is 3-D doesnt mean it has to jump on the bandwagon.Mk soul is 2-Dwow

mk games like mk deception or mk armageddon are definitely 3D games in all the meanings of the term, the gameplay and strategies are indeed completely tied up with the side stepping. when playing online vs professional players, you can notice they all use the 3D environnement to escape long combos, so they leave their opponent finishing all his moves in the air while they go closer to them, from behind, to connect some severe punishers. Mk4 was a false 3d game, because the 3D didn't play any part in the gameplay, but it's definitely not the case of the newer mk games (mkda, mkd, mka). People who say these games are false 3D games are just not good enough players, they badly need to play online vs someone ranked in the 25 best players...

They should just make 1 disc with all of them on it. Maybe for the 360, PS3, and Wii release a disc that has all of them on it. Arcade versions of all, and then fixed version of MKT for PSX and MKG.

yep, they do need to make a collectors disc for the next gen systems containing perfect emulations of mk1, mk2, mk3, umk3, mk4, mkT, mkG.
(mk2,mk3 need to be re-emulated better, MAT2 had too many bugs.but good job on umk3-xbox360 tho).

I have been saying they need to do this for a while now. All the most popular game franchises in game history have done this already, midway is soooo behind. You can get a Doom collectors set containing ultimate doom, doom II and final doom. YOu can also get a quake collectors set containing quake, quake 2, quake 3, all on one disc of course. so why wont midway do this? we all know MK is bigger than doom and quake ever was. grin

I emailed midway suggesting this to them a while back. They never replied. I think they get annoyed when fans suggest things like that; I guess they just cant take the fact that the fans know better about what they should be releasing than their own CEO.

And they also need to release another 2D MK. use todays more improved technology (better, clearer digitizing technology, better special effects using computer technology commonly used in todays box office hits, hopefully top of the line costume design and makeup for the actors-hollywood grade would be nice), it would be a godlike MK game if they did. I think doing such a move instead of another 3D mk, ironically, might actually bring MK back to the top where it once was. they have yet to top ultimate mk3, it is still the supreme champion of all mk games ever made.

face it, 2D fighting games are just better. fighting video games, for some reason are just better in 2D form. having a 3D fighting game is like trying to have a 2D doomlike cooridor shooter game, it just doesnt work well.

I say we organize a petition to make an mk collectors set!

-midway has made no decisions for MAT4 yet, so this means making an mk collectors disc as an alternative to MAT4 is still on the table when they do decide to visit the decision of weither or not to make MAT4.

-theyve already made a good emulation of UMK3 on xbox 360 (a patch I beleive is soon to be released to fix some things). theyve already made a good mk1 emulation (collectors MKD), all they really need to do is fix the bugs in the mk2 and mk3 emulations from MAT2. and then emulate MK4 and then they would be done. they got their work cut out for them. they wouldnt need to invest much, but would get alot out of it, such a disc would sell very well. it seems to me like a very good investment from a money making point of view.

-we all know they only made MAT3 becuase MAT2 sold pretty well. well all know MAT2 only sold well because of the mk games; no one game a sh!t about rampage or narc or gauntlet 2 etc. so, likewise, an mk collectors disc with quality emulations and good extra content all in good presentation would sell atleast twice as good as MAT2.

petition for collectors mk now!

I like the idea of having every MK game on one disc. But things I don't like are the Arcade versions were there are no options. Like in MKSM version of MK2, I would like to put the game mode to easy or normal. That damn game can get pretty hard. I was even tempted to buy a Sega Genesis with 32X to play an arcade perfect version of MK2 with options.

I know what you mean about having no options. mk1 that comes with mkD collectors edition doesnt have options. its annoying having it stuck on the same difficulty. this is another reason I hope they would make the mk collectors disc, so I can play mk1 with options. also, the 32x version of mk2 is not arcade perfect. the closest thing to arcade perfect would be MAT2 mk2 if you discount the flickering shadows and not able to fight smoke, after all MAT2 is a collection of emulations.

MAT2 = Midway Arcade Treasure 2, it's a collection of games released for a few systems. It includes arcade MK2 running in an emulator. It doesn't run perfectly, but it is indeed the best you can get.

EDIT: and Midway Arcade Treasures was released for PC. That has MK2 on it, apparently the emulation is very good, and they even released a patch to fix some of the problems the other versions had.

32X MK2 is pretty bad. It has quite a few frames of animation, but it still has few colors and small sprites. Overall I'd say SNES MK2 looks better. The gameplay is pretty bad too. Although none of the ports of MK2 had arcade-faithful gameplay, so for gameplay its just a matter of which you enjoy the most. They all seem equally broken.

I don't know where you got your info that 32X is "pretty bad" considering it was the best game port. Here is the artice comparing all the games. 32x is indeed the best version. Also anyone know anything about MK1 on Sega CD?

well, the sega genesis version was really bad. it looked horrible. the snes version was fairly good. IVe seen screen shots from the 32x version, but never played it. some shots I saw looked really good, almost arcade perfect, and others I saw reminded me of the sega genesis version. It would be between the snes and 32x. Doesn the PSX have mk2? I think that might actually be the best port made.

Although I had the console conversions. they never turn out perfect. Thats why I only like emulations of MKs, any ports are a turn off to me. Im one of those people that want to play mk as it was meant to be, with that perfect, and I mean perfect arcade experience, perfect in every detail: graphics, sounds, features and subtle details. Im only into emulations now, thats the only way to go. thank god for MAT2 and MAME. forget console ports.

speaking of emulations, midway needs to make the mk collectors disc! It seems the only logical way to go.

they got 3 options:

1. make MAT4, which probably wont contain mk4 or any mk for that matter, just a collection of more arcade hits no one really cares too much about. it will sell as good as or worse than MAT3. they will either lose money or make very little. so the worse case= negative $

2. Dont make any kind of collection disc. they will neither lose money or win money. worst case scenario =$0

3. Make a really good quality mk collectors disc. It will sell atleast twice as good as MAT2 (we know mat2 only sold well becuase of the mk games on it). so the worse case scenario would be atleast twice as much money as MAT2, which is a significant amount, worth the investment.

Maybe they could time the release with the new mk movie (out in a year right?). That would put MK in alot of peoples minds, reminding them that there is something called mortal kombat. plus the movie advertisements can double as indirect ads for the mk collectors disc; movie ads usually get more eyes than video game ads anyway, so its cheap self propelling advertisment. a similar tactic was used back in 1995 with the arcade release of mk3 and the 1st mk movie.

It seems to me like it couldnt be any other way but to go with 3. it just seems the logical thing to do.

organize a petition! whos with me? I dont mind spamming midway with emails. grin

Man will they mae a MK collector's disk with options? Probably not. I see them releasing a MK collectors with a rehash of Deception's MK!, MKSM's MK2, and MKA's UMK. That means no options and really bad difficulity settings.
