in subbie 1's ending, it states that someone wanted shang dead. i'm curious as to whether we know who this guy is and what your thoughts are.

mine are that it was either quan chi (and subbie didnt know that it was him, only the grandmaster of lin kuei), cos then he'll go to netherrealm and quan chi will own his soul, and everything he knows. somehow, (ive forgotten how) shang knows how shinnok can escape, which he later did during mkt.

or, more likely, the one who for some reason couldnt be in any mk before da; kenshi. its actually quite cool if that were the case. cos kenshi and sub2 are mates, yet he caused the 1st to die. better yet, kenshi thinks that there is one subbie and is unaware of all the shit caused. although, if he didnt pay sub1, then sub2 wouldnt be in mk and kenshi would have been left to die! ha!

The identity of Shang Tsung's wealthy enemy, who hired Older Sub Zero in MK1 has never been revealed, and most likely never will.

I really don't think it could be Kenshi, this doesn't make any sense. Nothing suggests that he is wealthy, and he is looking to kill Shang Tsung himself, and I don't see him paying someone to do it for him. Kenshi'slike a samurai, honour is everything, and it's very unlikely he'd hire dishonourable assasins (the Lin Quei were not good guys at this time).

Quan Chi could be more likely, though he'd have had to remain anonymous to the Lin Quei. Even when the two formed the Deadly Alliance, both Shang and Quan were looking out for themselves, with each planning to kill the other to come out on top and take power for himself once they'd killed their common enemies. Perhaps this was a previous plan of Quan Chi's to eliminate a powerful rival, who could easily be a threat to him.

But, all this is just speculation. As I said, we don't know who this mystery person is, and probably never will.

I'd always assumed it was Quan Chi, though I guess it was never mentioned. (I don't think it was revealed in MK Mythologies, though it may have been implied.)

Quan Chi did actualy hire Sub Zero via the Lin Kuei in MKM:SZ twice. Once, to steal the Map of Elements (Quan repayed this by killing Takeda and the rest of the Shirai Ryu) and once again to steal the amulet from the temple.

of course we dont actually know, thats what the thread is for. imagine if quan/sub had killed shang back then...the entire mk universe would be completely different. no da, no subbie 2, liu and co not killed, kahn w/ no plans/help for the mk2 and mk3 tournaments i.e. stuck in outworld for another generation w/ a reptile that doesnt stop making lame puns. i'm pretty sure shang has held the storyline all the way through to when raiden disintegrated himwow

+ kenshi couldve done it. its just that quan is a more likely person. is there anyone else who couldve done it? though, quan probably used the assassination as an excuse so that subbie would appear. if quan finds an almost impossible task for subbie, like killing a powerful sorcerer, then he'll get him at a certain place at a certain time i.e. mk1 so that he can get scorpioin to enact revenge on both of their behalfs. im so smart, sometimes it hurts.furious

anyways, suggestions?

I think it'd be cool if it was Bo'Rai Cho. Unable to compete on his own he hired Sub-Zero to do take out Tsung as a backup plan in case Liu failed.

I think it might be Quan Chi or Shinnok.

I always has this crazy theory that Kitana was the one who paid off Sub-Zero to kill Shang Tsung, because Shao Kahn's key to winning Earthrealm was Shang Tsung and Kitana wanted to screw over Kahn as badly as possible so she would need to kill Shang Tsung, but she couldn't do it herself or she would blow her cover. So she contacts the Lin Kuei and learn that at the end of Mythologies that Tsung invited Sub-Zero to enter the contest, so she hired him too kill Tsung... and he failed.

After his defeated the Lin Kuei sent the second Sub-Zero to finish the job. I believe He was the Earthrealm Warrior that Kitana was talking to the gained the suspision(SP?) of Kahn, who made Tsung create Mileena. I also think Kitana was the one that Sub-Zero spared that maybe Scorpion realise that this was a different warrior then from MK1.

You know, this actually is a good theory. Though I always thought the Earthrealm warrior Kitana was talking to according to her bio was Liu Kang, and I thought the one who hired Sub-Zero to kill Shang Tsung was Raiden, himself, but I never thought about this theory until you brought it up.
