I'm pretty sure that this belongs in the art section. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You want to know a way to do it in photoshop, right? I can't tell you the ways the developers used (cause I don't know!). One way to do it is to learn how to use the selection tools in photoshop. Take a character like subby and select all the colored areas. Then you can paint over them. This is the worst looking method, but it works. There are other ways that are simple. Just pick up a book on Photoshop.

Open a sprite in photoshop. Click Image, then Mode, and set it to Indexed Color. This will make a pallet for it. Now you can go to Image -> Mode -> Color Table to look at the pallet, change colors in it, and then save that as a new pallet that you can load up.

ketchup, I really wanted to help you on the Photoshop pallete swap you pm'ed me about, but I have had only 21⁄2 hours of sleep a day since Monday. I've been going to school for a few hours then work double-shift, which allowed me to have little or no time at home.

It's very easy to do that.
Step 1= select the area you want to change the color of.
Step 2= As a precaution, make a copy of that selection and paste in on a layer above, so it's on top of the old layer.
Step 3= Now with the area you want selected, use the Quick key command Ctrl+u
A color menu comes up. In that menu you can scroll the color bars and change the colors any way you want. There is also a button on the lower Right of that color window that says "color"
If you open that up, you will have even more freedom with the color selections.
It's easy as 1 2 3

Are you asking about making a pallete for an image so you can change it or just changing the colors by filling in?

Ctrl+u is the easiest way to do it IMO.
That way, you can still keep the wrinkles and texture of whatever it is you are changing the color of.
To edit sprites, the selection tool, and the stamp are your best friends.
Combine that with the brushes and eraser and you're all set.
It's good to know how to add highlights with the Overlay layer option too. It's like burn and dodge, but on a separate layer. You just color white to brighten stuff up, and Black to burn.
It's a great tool, very handy.
