MAME has had netplay for almost (or more than) 5 years. I play someone in UMK3 almost every day. Psy I'll play you sometime, just PM me and we'll set something up.

i finally realized what to do. you have to get the kaillera version of mame. now all i gotta do is connect to a good server so i dont get alot of lag.

version 0,64 is the best, this is the version the MK players use

the lag mainly depends on what type of internet connection you have and what server u are playing on. if you are hosting the game its best to be on cable internet (that i have
) or dsl. i was playing mk2kungbroken and konqrr all last night and for the most part we didnt have alot of lag problems. even tho i had fun i got my ass whipped lol. i'll be on tonight if anyone wants to play me.

Gameplay is 99% fine if you have at least a 1.8 gHz computer, a cable modem, and a server where both people have under 50ms.

sounds like i gotta pretty decent connection for the most part.
the cable modem part is the most crucial thing when playing online. on dialup you will have a BIG lag problem

Any particular reason why the .64 version is preferred? Is that the last version before they took out the speed hacks? I've noticed that in later MAME versions, the sound problems have been partially solved--I don't get the horrible scratching anymore; instead I get a slight "warping" effect for the music.
Oh and about those system requirements listed... does it take more CPU power to run an ONLINE game smoothly, or is that only really affected by your connection speed? Because I only have 1.67 GHz, but MK runs for me without any slowdown. If I can run it fine now, is there a chance it will get choppy for an online game?
In any case I'll be getting that Kaillera thing. I should be getting broadband at home soon, so I look forward to playing against some of the MK Forumers!

High requirement games do require a bit more in the specs dept when playing online for some reason, I'm not 100% sure why, but it might have something to do with the other person's computer as well.

exactly. and the broadband connection is recommended because of the amount of data the game would require to run smoothly online, especially if you're hosting the game. i wouldnt want to play someone if they was hosting it on dialup lol.

And there's also a chance that MAME will hate you, like it does me.

I searched around for info on the MAME hate recently when trying to help TakerMK and the only thing I've seen mentioned is video card issues, there must be some way to tweak things to get it to run relatively smoothly.
