I've been thinking...trying to make sense of Quan Chi's story and filling in the Gaps for his background. It bothers me that I don't know where he's from or what he is for that matter. What messed me up really was the ending "Baraka's demis," I mean how'd he do that and what did he mean when he said, "I haven't a life to give?" I know that that ending isn't really canon, but still.
On to the reason for this post. The only thing that I have come up with is that he is undead. The story would go something like this. He sacrificed his life/soul to someone or something in order to gain, or enhance, his power/skills in the dark arts. It's not a lot, but it's a start.
I like that premis, it would explain why he would need to recharge every so often. Why he can go undetected by the gods. It would also explain why he said he didn't have a life to give. feed back please.

I've been wondering about Quan Chi's home realm and species/race/whatever myself, and being undead does seem like a possible explanation (at least for the species part). I've also wondered about what powers he has, if any, besides inter-realm travel and throwing big green skulls. I hope these questions are fully answered in MK6.

Well, if you wanna fill holes in the story, you should know that Quan chi made a deal with Baraka to kill shinok, despite him having a fake amulete.
About I havent a life to give, he probably said that because he is so arrogant in nature. I cant explain it any further, but I understand where his comming from.

I'm pretty sure he meant Shinnok...

You make a very good point Asmedeous. Quan Chi's past is over looked. I would like to know if were he is from is were he learned the dark arts or from someone else.
Imagine in a future mortal Kombat, Quan Chi had a master who show's up?

Quan Chi's a mystery. All we know is that he is some kind of mortal species. He chose to thrive in the Nethrealm and gain as much knowledge of Sorcery.

We don't even know that! where did you get that info from?

If ya look back and think you might be able to analyze it. He is a mortal who chose to live in the Netherealm. He met Shinnok and formed a partnership in the dead realm.

The best guess of quan chi is that he has human tendencies but seems to be unbelievably allied to oni and outworld people. But personally, IMO, I dont think his anything more than some sort of revised human. They should explain more in mk deception I suppose.
Quan Chi is a free roaming sorcerer who is very strong in the black arts... he traveled to Netherrealm and freed Shinok from his confines... in return Shinok made Quan Chi Arch-Sorcerer of his army... Quan Chi however decieved Shinok and later on made an alliance with Shang Stung after hearing of the Dragon Kings lost army which would give him complete power...

Yeah ghalyon, but there is much debate on whether he is human, half human, what kind of sorcerer. gamefaqs has him as :human?, and i tend to really like gamefaqs explanations, any further elaborations or explanations will really be helpfull.
i think imo that hes part vampire because of his white complection and the tribal marks on his body... either that or when he set Shinok free, in return Shinok took Quan Chis life only to restore it in a way that he could not be killed, hence his white complection meaning that he is undead and is eternal...

His "tribal markings" are tattoos he magically burned on himself; they represent information regarding his amulet. And why would his white complexion make him part vampire? Nitara doesn't have that complexion. The theory about Shinnok making him undead and eternatl makes more sense.

well i never said he was human but some kind of mortal race. Just like Edenians are mortals but not human. Quan Chi couldn't be undead

Why can't he be undead?

because he wasn't banished to the Netherealm. He just choose to live in that domain

I doubt that he chose to live in the Netherealm, seeing as he's a free-roaming sorceror and since Deadly Alliance stated that the longer Quan Chi stayed in the Netherealm, the weaker he became. Maybe he only went there to free Shinnok (that couldn't have taken that long if he did it before his magic was weakened) and stayed for short periods of time. The times that he did stay there could've affected his skin, giving him that zombie look.
my theory is that Quan Chi either deliberitly or by accident was killed and sent to the netherealm... while there he devised a plan to free Shinok... upon doing so Shinok granted him his life back in the form of being immortal or "undead" thus he was the pale look of death to him...

I really like that theory, its almost identical to what I was saying.

I don't think Quan Chi is undead. Nice theory though. Quanchi became weaker because he was in Sorpions lair of the Netherealm and he trie dto use his sorcery which prove useless. But when he is in another part of the Netherealm its a different scenario. It is quite logical that he choose to live in the dead realm once he agreed to be Shinnok's right hand man

I was just reading over the 'official' MKM backstory and it suprised me and sparked something. In it, Quan Chi refers to Tsung as an upstart suggesting to me that he is older and maybe even, at the time, more powerfull!
Quan couldn't have lived in the N-realm, because, as we all know, he would have lost his power. The MKM story says that he had exhasted about every plan he could before he met Shang. He probably reported to the Shinnok on a regular basis or (and I've been sitting on this for a while) he talked to him from his Inner Sanctum. I forget what the game said about the Inner Sanctum verbatum, but basically it stated that he could project he conciousness over great distances maybe even through to other realms.
